This new Weezer cover that surfaced today is a must share. I love Toto’s epic 80s anthem Africa, cheesy or not, and apparently, fans have been clamoring at Weezer to cover it. And now they have! I was fortunate enough to catch Rivers Cuomo doing a solo show just a few weeks ago at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. He did a flurry of covers, but it would’ve been sweet to hear this Africa cover live, too. You can stream/download Weezer’s rendition, here.

It’s a splendid Friday for fans of Phantogram like me. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have surprised us with two new tracks, one an original, one a Sparklehorse cover. All proceeds from the new two-track single go to a very good cause, one that’s far too relevant lately considering all the dear people we’ve been losing, both in our personal lives and within the music scene. The single benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). For Sarah Barthel, who lost her own sister to suicide back in 2016, this is all too personal. Steam new song Someday above, which sees the typically trip hop and electro-rock duo go a dreamy meditative route. Their gorgeous cover of Sparklehorse’s Saturday can be streamed below.

PRXZM’s transcendental cover remix of LA producer William Black’s Letting Go, featuring Park Avenue, arrives like a soft, aching sigh, but it leaves us floating on cloud nine with its effulgent flickering, majestic marching beauty. Their milky smooth vocals and tender keys emphasize the original’s emotive future bass potency. Melancholia abounds even as we’re whisked away on a blissful journey by the refined rendition. I’ve always been drawn to sadness and the beauty it encapsulates in its own, unique way. PRXZM’s version of Letting Go is the epitome of all that I love about sorrow and joy. You can listen to the original, here.  PRXZM’s remix can be found on The Letting Go Remix EP, here.

We love what Turntable Kitchen has been doing with various artists, teaming up with them to release full covers of classic albums and artists on vinyl. The latest such ear turning foray involves Washington, D.C. indie duo GEMS, who’ve chosen to cover John Lennon’s LP Imagine in its entirety. Crippled Inside is the latest single they’ve shared from the project. We never expected to hear Lennon in quite such a fashion, but GEMS has created a gorgeously dark electro/alt-pop rendition of Crippled Inside, inflected with shades of breathy Phantogram and hints of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill. Deliciously warped synths adorn the sensuously bewitching cover. GEMS’ cover of John Lennon’s Imagine is available exclusively from Turntable Kitchen’s SOUNDS DELICIOUS vinyl subscription service, here.

There’s no hiding the fact that I’m still addicted to songs like Looking For Knives and St. James, even though we haven’t heard from DYAN in quite some time. The Los Angeles-based alt pop trio even mesmerized me when I made sure to catch them live at SXSW over a year ago, but they’ve dropped off the map since then. I’m happy to share that DYAN has finally returned with their gorgeously entrancing indie pop. They’ve offered up a superb cover of José González´ Cycling Trivialities, giving the Swedish artist’s song a delicate and intricate re-imaging on a track so unmistakably DYAN. The song trickles gently, burbles softly, and captivates fully. It’s not surprising that DYAN and José González are a match made in heaven. His capricious strolling melodies and finespun folk music lends itself perfectly to DYAN’s understated beauty and eloquent intonation, which at times feels like Florence Welch gone minimalist. Alexis Marsh of DYAN explains: "I cycle my fair share of trivialities. It feels too delicate to have been written for a stranger, as a judgement of their public persona; it could be directed at anyone. At all of us. But whoever it’s directed to/from, this is a one-sided story …“  I’ll gladly continue cycling through DYAN’s growing repertoire of elegant musical offerings, and none of it is ever trivial. Their cover of Cycling Trivialities will be on a new EP named Absence.

Let’s continue our Monday afternoon dalliance with fine cover gems by taking a youthful frolic with this modern take on Pussycat Dolls 2000′s hit classic Stickwitu. LA based producer Jynjo, who’s already graced IHM with his music a number of times this past year, gives Stickwitu a contemporary future beats twist by injecting it with effervescent electronic beats and crystalline vocals turned in by fellow Los Angeles artist Aubrey Wood. The doe-eyed future pop crush song captures all the butterflies and heart flutters that we associate with young love. Rising producer Jynjo is currently taking a break from live performances and concentrating on creating unique music for his fans. Some exciting collaborations are lined up, too. For now, you can stream/download Stickwitu, here.

Ever since Salad Days in 2014, slacker rock purveyor Mac DeMarco has become a dignitary of sorts in the indie rock scene, with countless devout fans all across the world. Sydney’s Mickey Kojak must be a big fan, too. After all, he’s given Mac DeMarco’s Chamber Of Reflection a ravishing cover re-work, and the resulting languorously synthwavy and spacey soulful rendition is absolutely stunning, if not wonderfully, dreamily nostalgic. It’s a thorough transformation, and a thorough intoxicator.
