Ghost Tape Vol. 6

December 31, 2011

Ghostpoet threw up an hour long mixtape for us to listen to on soundcloud. It’s #6 of the Ghost Tapes. No tracklisting yet, but he promises one tomorrow. A lot of glitchy and smooth r&b and hip hop stuff alternating in here, though I’m not too far into the mix yet. It’s amazing the man is such a great live hip hop performer and lyricist, and such an amazing producer and mixer on top of that. These musicians are really something… Here it is below and as soon as I find out what the tracklisting is, I’ll be sure to update!

UPDATE: No, not the tracklisting yet, but whoa there’s some goodies in here. I just got to tUnE-yArDs’ Bizness in the mix… woohoo!

Crim3s – In And Out Of Love (Audio Collage)

I’m currently being blown away.

DISCLAIMER: Getting entirely through this mix will involve a leap-of-faith, on your behalf. This is a very unconventional packaging of music. It is essentially a 23-minute mindfuck, with goodies sprinkled throughout.

This mix is insanely multi-dimensional, it begins in such a haunting and unpleasant fashion with the melody of “Over The Rainbow” in the distance, but the layers eventually unravel. You get a nice little rendition of Nero’s “Innocence” at 5 minutes, and at 9 minutes I got so confused at what I was listening to (but in a good way), I literally had to make sure I was still streaming this from the Crim3s Soundcloud.

I don’t want to ruin all the surprises that get revealed throughout the mix, so definitely give this mix a play all the way through.

Trust me, it’s definitely an interesting composition.

Deliciously dark and sinister… a little something for the slow day. 😉

Another epic Popscene night! Thank you Mr. Travis Egedy, aka Pictureplane! He was dang good live, and the laser light show was more than incredible and fitting.

Next up, Popscene NYE with The Limousines and RAC! Giddy up!

Jinja Safari

December 30, 2011

Jinja Safari is an Australian band, and I had the luck to stumble upon them just now. Here’s their video for one of the more recent singles, Sunken House. They integrate certain African instruments and rhythms to create an interesting folksy, melodic, and islandy sound. Their music almost seems like a blend of Sigur Rós post-rock with Temper Trap pop rock. The song is a lush, delightful listen. Jinja Safari has a few EPs out, but their debut album is slated for 2012.

Here’s a few more less recent videos to exemplify their unique and pleasant sound. They seem to have a very nature laden, earthy thing going on. Every track I’ve listened to from them so far is very decent, if not brilliant. I will be keeping up with these guys! Wonder how they’re doing in Australia and if they’ll make their way to this side of the world sometime.

Wooden Shjips’ guitar heavy KEXP session

December 30, 2011

Wooden Shjips did a four track session for KEXP back in August, and KEXP has finally uploaded the full performance. The four songs within the set include: Black Smoke Rise, Lazy Bones, Home and Flight. The San Francisco psychedelic rock band tear it up on the guitars, and it’s a great, enjoyable and rawkin’ listen.

Skrillex Orchestral Suite

December 29, 2011

Wow, what the heck? I just saw that Skrillex uploaded this on his official youtube channel. It’s an orchestral suite by Varien. Not too clear on who or what that is, but I clicked play, and it really is an orchestral suite of Skrillex songs. This is awesome! Here’s the times and tracks within the suite:

Intro [0:00 – 0:45]
With You, Friends – Skrillex [0:46-1:41]
Scatta – Skrillex [1:42-1:59]
Equinox (First of the Year) – Skrillex [2:04-3:19]
All I Ask Of You – Skrillex [3:20 – 4:36]
Interlude – Skrillex [4:36 – 5:14]
Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites – Skrillex [5:15 – 6:54]

For some reason it greatly reminds me of RPG video game music. What an incredibly different and classic take on Skrilly’s dubstep work!

Listen to An Horse’s track Camp Out and it’s Respective RAC Remix.

Cause it’s okay to fall down.
It’s okay to crumble.
I’ve seen this before.
I have  s e e n   t h i s   b e f o r e   a n d

Don’t forget we have the RAC portfolio living on Blue Sky so you can hear each masterpiece and download a selection for free.

Shearwater’s Animal Joy

December 29, 2011

Wow, why have I not heard of Shearwater before? I’ve just been blown away by a beautiful song off their upcoming album Animal Joy, however, I cannot find a version to embed and share directly yet despite frantic searching. The song is Animal Life, and the only place to hear it right now is streaming off of NPR, so please go there and check it out, it’s amazing and has some very unique instrumentals infused into the folksy psychedelic rock melody.

Again, check it out here:

In the meantime, I did a little research on Shearwater. The indie rock band was actually formed in Austin, Texas in 1999 by members of well known indie folk band Okkervil River. Shearwater has had a whopping 7 albums out, and Animal Joy will be the 8th. I listened to some of their older tracks, and it seems Animal Joy is a departure from their previous sound, giving a noisier, more rock infused sound (at least from the two tracks I’ve listened to from Animal Joy so far). Previous songs had a more choir like, slightly more minimalist approach, but were absolutely beautiful too. Off of Animal Joy, there is only one song I can embed and share below, and it’s the track Breaking The Yearlings. It’s a great song too, but nowhere near as mind blowing and eye opening as Animal Life, so again, please do go listen to it, and as soon as there is a video or official audio to share directly, I’ll be on it again. Here is Breaking The Yearlings:

Underworld: Awakening soundtrack

December 29, 2011

Sheesh, they’re making a fourth Underworld film. I don’t know about you, but I thought the first couple were pretty disappointing. I didn’t even bother to watch the third one yet. I guess people will still flock to see it, like so many other film sequels. Maybe they’ll do a better job on this fourth one, we’ll see. After all, the dark storyline and feel of the film does fit what’s popular these days.

The soundtrack for Underworld: Awakening looks like a heckuva compilation of artists and music, regardless if the film will be well made or not. Here’s what the tracklisting will be…

Evanescence – ‘Made of Stone’ (Renholder Remix)
Lacey Sturm – ‘Heavy Prey’
Linkin Park – ‘Blackout’ (Renholder Remix)
The Cure – ‘Apart’ (Renholder Remix)
Stella Katsoudas – ‘Killer & a Queen’
Ministry – ‘Watch Yourself’ (Renholder Remix)
Lacuna Coil – ‘Trip The Darkness’ (Ben Weinman Remix)
The Naked and Famous – ‘Young Blood’ (Renholder Remix)
Black Light Burns – ‘It Rapes All In It’s Path’
William Control – ‘The Posthumous Letter’
Civil Twilights – ‘How I’m I Supposed To Die’
& Sons – ‘Consolation Prize’
8MM – ‘Liar’
Ryan T. Hope – ‘You Won’t See the Light’
Combichrist – ‘Bottle of Pain’
Collide – ‘Intruder’
Justin Lassen feat. Silent Fury – ‘Exit Wounds’ (Justin Lassen Remix)

Hmm… Remixes of Evanescence, LP, The Cure, The Naked and Famous? Songs from Ministry, Civil Twilights, etc? I say yes to the soundtrack, but I’m a maybe on the film. We’ll see… 😉 Looking forward to hearing these tracks and sharing ’em on I Heart Moosiq!

Folksy New Year

December 29, 2011

The Christmas music onslaught is dying down, but now we have a handful of New Year’s music floating around. Here’s another New Year song, this time an original folksy, country track from English singer songwriter Frank Turner in conjunction with country singer Jon Snodgrass. It’s a very nice, warm tune to ring in 2012!
