Maiyu

February 28, 2013

Yep, still on the electronic. Maiyu is Fenech-Soler’s catchy new single. There’s a tribal quality to the beats that is pretty delicious. Along with the smooth vocals, there’s something very Miike Snow meets Swedish House Mafia about the track. The British electropop band are working on a sophomore album for later this year. I’m eager to hear more.

Explosions (Gemini remix)

February 28, 2013

Wow, I’m really hitting the electronic genre hard these last few posts. Well, it’s no secret that Ellie Goulding’s pop songs are choice cuts for hard EDM remixing. Bassnectar’s remix of her track Lights is probably still one of the best dubstep remixes ever. The latest Ellie song to get the drop treatment is her Halcyon track Explosions. The remixer? British producer Gemini. There’s just something so satisfying about dubstep Ellie. When she performed Lights live at the Fox in Oakland a few weeks ago, the crowd was thirsting for some heavy beats. In the end, she delivered. And the place went crazy!

While I’m at it, I’ll also share UK drum and bass act Rudimental’s 26 minute long Live Loung DJ Set they did for BBC Radio 1 on February 24th. They’ve uploaded it onto soundcloud for us all to enjoy. These guys are tearing up the scene with their awesome tracks. I realized the other day why they’re so awesome and why I’m drawn so much to their sound. They combine drum and bass with some kickass horns on their songs. Geezus. Too good. Anyway, those on this side of the pond, they’re invading shortly. I’ve got my tix. In the meantime, here’s their mix they threw together for Annie Mac on BBC Radio. And yes, it does include the omnipresent Harlem Shake, for better or for worse.

Tracklist:

-Kidnap Kid – Animaux
-Rudimental – Hell Could Freeze (feat Angel Haze)
-Klangkarussell – Sonnetanz
-Todd Terje – Inspector Norse
-Rudimental – Feel The Love
-Baauer – Harlem Shake
-Marvin Gaye – Lets Get It On
-Damian Marley – Welcome To Jamrock
-Rudimental – Waiting All Night

I had the pleasure of catching American mashup producer Kap Slap live a couple weeks ago in San Francisco, and boy, was that fun. He’s proving himself to be what some call the “Girl Talk of EDM”. Don’t let that mislead you though, he mashes far more than just dance trax. The guy’s really, really good at what he does. On top of that, he just graduated from college with a double degree (I forget in what, economics and something else scientific?). So, now he’s focusing 100% of himself to his music prowess. Get ready to hear the name Kap Slap a crap ton more. Here’s a mega uber high energy hour long mix to get you into a frenzy. He called it the Spring Break Mix 2013. This one’s obviously pretty focused on the EDM stuff.

Acoustic Mausi

February 28, 2013

I’ve been digging UK pop act Mausi’s sound for awhile now, and I’m pretty sure they’re on the fringe of getting a crap ton of attention. Their most recent single Move is super dancey and catchy. Their older song Sol, which first placed them square on my radar, was also very upbeat and fun. As great as those songs are, I always enjoy my acoustic stripped down renditions of songs. The raw, live versions also tend to really showcase a band’s talent and vocals. Therefore, it was no big whooping surprise when the acoustic version of Move turned out to be great. You really don’t get to hear the fantastic vocals as clearly on the regular veresions. This shows a very different side of Mausi. If you’ve skipped over my previous Mausi features, go visit em. I’ll also tack on the regular cut of Move below. But please, go check out Sol and their acoustic performance of Disney Films on youtube (or via my old posts).

OFFICIAL VID: Melody’s Echo Chamber – Crystallized

February 28, 2013

And now, some French shoegaze and dream pop! Melody’s Echo Chamber, aka Melody Prochet, recently released a self titled debut album. Crystallized is one of the psychy, distortion heavy, hazy tracks off the album. Unsurprisingly, the debut album was produced by psych rock band Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. Stream the brand new video for the song below.
