We love what Turntable Kitchen has been doing with various artists, teaming up with them to release full covers of classic albums and artists on vinyl. The latest such ear turning foray involves Washington, D.C. indie duo GEMS, who’ve chosen to cover John Lennon’s LP Imagine in its entirety. Crippled Inside is the latest single they’ve shared from the project. We never expected to hear Lennon in quite such a fashion, but GEMS has created a gorgeously dark electro/alt-pop rendition of Crippled Inside, inflected with shades of breathy Phantogram and hints of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill. Deliciously warped synths adorn the sensuously bewitching cover. GEMS’ cover of John Lennon’s Imagine is available exclusively from Turntable Kitchen’s SOUNDS DELICIOUS vinyl subscription service, here.

Yumi Zouma is one of my favorite dream pop bands, but I find it rather heinous to describe their music in such a simplistic fashion. The Kiwis have given us a dashing array of music built on that aforementioned dreamy backbone. Heck, just listen to this amazing cover of Oasis’ She’s Electric! Yumi Zouma opts for a shoegaze whirring, lo-fi woozy approach on the heady song, which is but a part of their full album cover of Oasis’ “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?” to arrive via Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious vinyl subscription series. Mmm… noisy buzzing, guitar reverberating deliciousness, indeed. The album will be out on April 6th and limited to 1000 copies. Learn more about the series, here.

HaHA! Found it! Revered Toronto indie band Stars debuted a previously unreleased track titled Wishful on NPR the other day, and I’ve been waiting for a version to share. They have it on their soundcloud today! It’s a charming track that I instantly fell for. It’s nice to hear some new Stars, no doubt. They’re releasing this track and another unreleased one titled The Light on limited edition 7" to “celebrate” their fall tour. 500 copies of that 7" will be available. Hmmmmm. Hmmmmmm. I think I wantz. I actually had to miss them the last time they played at the Fox in Oakland, but I plan on catching them on their fall tour. Sometimes, it’s actually advantageous to miss a band the first time around. The second time around, they sometimes play smaller venues, as in this case. Slim’s for the win, baby! I’ll share Light once they preview it (if it’s good which I have a feeling it will be).

Swedish indie rock band Shout Out Louds are back after a few years of silence, and not only that, they’re doing something really rad with their very first new single Blue Ice. They’re releasing it on 7" before it comes out on their next full length album in 2013. Not just ANY 7". It’s going to be made of ICE. There’s only going to be a very limited number. 10 to be exact, and only 1 is up for grabs in a giveaway by Merge Records. I’m not sure if they’re selling the other 9? The giveaway includes an ICE BOX which consists of a mold and a bottle of liquid. And you create your own 7". Pretty cool. No pun intended. Or is there? And the icing on the ice? Blue Ice is a great tune. Check out this short video about the Blue Ice ice. I dunno, I find this kinda amazeballs. A playable record made of ice. Sweet.

OFFICIAL VID: Benga – I Will Never Change

April 6, 2012

Benga, one of the touted south London “godfathers” of dubstep, released a new video today for short song I Will Never Change. The coolest thing about it? Well, it utilizes 960 pieces of vinyl. Yep. 960. The vinyl was measured meticulously, cut, and then animated to form a real life waveform. Watch and be amazed. Oh, and enjoy the wobbles too, Benga knows how to DROP. He was pivotal in helping to CREATE the drop.
