OFFICIAL VID: Emily King – Distance

I first found out about Emily King and her soulful, jazzy R&B music when I attended Emeli Sandé’s San Francisco debut show at the Independent back in the beginning of 2013. Emily King was one of the supporting acts, and many people had gone early just to catch the Grammy nominated singer songwriter’s set. Emily released a video today for her recent single Distance, and I found myself loving the music video very much with its split screens and visual representation of parts of the song itself. Distance is a snazzy, catchy tune, rounded out by Emily King’s amazing, beautiful vocals.

Another surprise cool cover that arose this week is a total genre redefining of classic 2Pac tune California Love by one of my favorite newcomers of late, Cleveland’s SomeKindaWonderful. That’s right. The guys who gave us the spectacular single Reverse, which is exploding and blowing up alt charts right now, covered the well loved hip hop tune. SomeKindaWonderful’s California Love is a gritty alt rock version that lies somewhere in between The Neighbourhood, AWOLNation, and Imagine Dragons. Thanks for the love, SomeKindaWonderful!

It always impresses me when anyone is able to turn in a successful cover of any song by the Smiths, particularly their classic hits, like This Charming Man. Of course, I love the song so much that it delights me to hear it in any shape or form. New York rockers SKATERS offer up this rowdy, grungy punk version that sounds like it was a load of fun to record.

Let’s call it a night with one more sensational, spine tingling remix. Young San Francisco producer Andrew Luce has been wowing me with some mad remixes of songs by popular artists including 50 Cent and The Weeknd’s version of Drunk In Love. His latest specimen is Lana Del Rey’s sadcore ballad Carmen. He really turns up on the bass and the percolating, rolling synths, giving Carmen a whole new extra sassy trap makeover.

Let’s extend the late evening jam session with a sweet collaboration. Hawaiian producer Mr. Carmack, who dropped my jaw when I came upon his electronic and hip hop music a few months ago, teamed up with the ever incredible Australian producer Ta-ku on a new track titled Miss You Most (At Night). According to them, the song started out simply as an experimental beat while they were on tour together Down Under, which then turned into an early morning “joke” track, which then turned into a real attempt at a tune, and ultimately resulted in the best collaboration they’ve done. The vocoder heavy tune is a great wistful late night treat to float away to, which is pleasantly surprising, since I originally expected their collaboration to be of a far heftier atmosphere.
