Those that know me well know how much of a mega-fan I am when it comes to Baltimore’s Future Islands. I was wild with elation when the band, lead by dance-fanatic and versatile musician Samuel T. Herring, broke out big with their album Singles a few years ago. As such, I’ve been enjoying Calliope, a surprise return by the synthwave and synthpop band and a one-off contribution to Adult Swim’s Singles series. I can already picture Sam dancing to the song’s perky beats and epic melody live. A lot of times, I find that these one-off contributions tend to be a bit lacking compared to an artist or band’s usual releases. That certainly isn’t so when it comes to Future Islands and Calliope. The single is available from Adult Swim, here.

We’ve been in love with Kero Kero Bonito’s crisp and playful indie pop for a very long time. The British trio usually enthralles us with a sprightly and airy brand of electro-pop that seems much inspired by J-pop, but KKB has proceeded to delight us with a new direction in their latest music, and the change-up has only served to make us fall even harder for the band. A dreamier indie rock sound has curled its way into their last few songs, like on Cinema and Only Acting. This guitar hazy sound, which reminds us of the likes of Yumi Zouma and Men I Trust, continues on new charmer Time Today. The lo-fi indie pop bop (and it truly bops!) comes from Kero Kero Bonito’s next album Time ‘n’ Place, which we’re hoping will arrive soon. Time Today even sports a retro italo-wave phosphorescence that reminds me of some of M83′s music off their album Junk, as well as some of Phoenix’s more laid back and wavy tunes. Despite its peppy beat, Time Today is a languorous and soothing, dreamy and laid back confection, well worth a lot of your time, today or any other day.

Ever since Salad Days in 2014, slacker rock purveyor Mac DeMarco has become a dignitary of sorts in the indie rock scene, with countless devout fans all across the world. Sydney’s Mickey Kojak must be a big fan, too. After all, he’s given Mac DeMarco’s Chamber Of Reflection a ravishing cover re-work, and the resulting languorously synthwavy and spacey soulful rendition is absolutely stunning, if not wonderfully, dreamily nostalgic. It’s a thorough transformation, and a thorough intoxicator.

Though I no longer have a VHS collection at home (all of my movies are on DVD or Blu-ray), there is a bounteous selection of tunes from NYC trio VHS Collection that I will cherish forever. It’s obvious our love for the band will never go obsolete as the indie trio regales us with their latest single, One, a rambunctious outpouring of sleek pulsing electro-rock and beatific new wave. The sweeping, soaring single is an epic first release of 2018 for the ascending band, whom we’ve been praising for well over two years. VHS Collection hits the road in May with a stop in San Francisco at Popscene/the Rickshaw Stop on May 18th. Guess who’s going to be in attendance and already purchased a ticket? We’ve been enjoying this absolutely gorgeous song since it surfaced last Friday. Brooklyn singer songwriter Mitski and the Bay’s experimental rock/noise pop expert Xiu Xiu have teamed up on a splendorous synthwavy beauty named Between The Breaths, their contribution to How To Talk To Girls At Parties’ soundtrack. I already couldn’t wait to see the movie, which stars Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and many other acclaimed actors. It pairs 70s punk with quirky Neil Gaiman sci-fi, which evokes a resounding yes from me. Between The Breaths’ scope feels more than cosmic, and it’s deeply entrenched in sweet nostalgia, too. I can’t get enough of Mitski’s aptly breathy voice on the glistering gem. This is definitely a favorite of the moment.

We’ve told the story countless times now, having shared so many of Mating Ritual’s songs over the past year or two. But let’s take a trip down memory lane anyway. Ryan Marshall Lawhon began the current project after he ended his last one, Pacific Air, with his brother. And we were sad when it happened… Very sad. But then Mating Ritual came along, and we fell in love again, and now all we can do is thank the stars that Lawhon has continued down this enthralling path. Plus, since the last time we’ve featured Mating Ritual, Lawhon has reunited with his brother, making this the very same duo that enamored us back in those Pacific Air days! Right now, Mating Ritual is preparing to release their second album Light Myself On Fire. Its title track is a jaunty, peppy prancer with contagious oh-ohs, Future Islands-like waggish synths, and a whole lot of scratchy vocal vigor. Light Myself On Fire is the third track Mating Ritual has unveiled from the new 9-track album which will arrive on May 4th via the band’s own label Smooth Jaws. Catch them on tour with Penguin Prison this spring. They’ll close out the tour in San Francisco on June 23rd at Brick + Mortar. For more details, visit their website, here.
