Danish duo Kill J have returned this week with Bullet, an artsy, scintillating electropop track. Bullet will be out on July 4 on limited 7" on Rough Trade. The song is incredibly infectious and has a percolating, bouncing, pulsing beat and chorus that brings to mind M.I.A., paired with a drizzle of Die Antwoord oddity and a lot of Scandinavian icy pop sweetness.

Continuing this block of wonky, trippy, loungy productions with this dope tune by Toronto producer OBESØN. I Need You To Need Me is his incredible new track. It starts off very skittery and hypnotic, but wait till you get to the 1:40 mark. Holy hell. I almost want to tear up when the melodramatic strings hit. I Need You To Need Me, if you haven’t surmised by now, samples Lykke Li’s tune of the same name. The looped, glitchy sampling and haunting, dark, entrancing production is one helluva brilliant package with a lasting effect.

Funny how I inadvertently line up my posts for the day. Here’s another one somewhat related to Jay-Z. British producer Evian Christ recently signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, but he’ll still be dropping his debut EP on Tri Angle on March 17, which is great news, since I’m quite fond of Tri Angle Records. Waterfalls is the killer title track off the EP, a mesmerizing, bombastic, futuristic explosion of hip hop and electronic sound.

Introducing: Little Simz

February 28, 2014

Little Simz is an up and coming 19 year old rapper from London, and boy, does she has some talent. Even Jay-Z has taken notice and is gunning for her. Lil Simz released her fourth mixtape Blank Canvas on Jay Z’s Life+Times website. She’s also an actress back at home. Lil Simz flow is hypnotic and smooth, raw and passionate, immediately grabbing a hold of my attention and never letting go. Watch the video for Deranged below, and check out a few more tracks underneath, including the lavish Mandarin Oranges Part 2, and its predecessor Mandarin Oranges, which was produced by Sango and is a collaboration with Waldo. Angel Haze, I think you have some serious competition.

If you haven’t heard of Los Angeles based singer songwriter Pia Mia, you will. Last month, she dropped her debut EP The Gift, and its abundant in catchy, radio friendly pop tunes. And now? Now, she’s featured on the impressive soundtrack for the highly buzzing new Hollywood film Divergent, along with a long list of well established talent. Her Divergent contribution is named Fight For You, and it’s a Banks meets Ellie Goulding meets Foxes song that features Chance The Rapper. Oh yea, it’s also produced by the amazing Clams Casino.
