This new Weezer cover that surfaced today is a must share. I love Toto’s epic 80s anthem Africa, cheesy or not, and apparently, fans have been clamoring at Weezer to cover it. And now they have! I was fortunate enough to catch Rivers Cuomo doing a solo show just a few weeks ago at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. He did a flurry of covers, but it would’ve been sweet to hear this Africa cover live, too. You can stream/download Weezer’s rendition, here.

On July 6th, Grammy-nominated British trip hop and electronic legends Goldfrapp will be releasing a deluxe edition of Silver Eye, their latest album from last year. On it are several new bonus tracks, including a rendition of album closer Ocean featuring none other than Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan. Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp is a more than epic union, and this glorious new version of Ocean more than reflects that. You can find the track on Apple Music, here. Pre-order Silver Eye: Deluxe Edition, here.

Parade Of Lights is back with a new EP named Human Condition Pt 1. New song Tangled Up is even featured on the soundtrack for season 2 of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. The Los Angeles synthrock/alt pop outfit deliver a iridescent pulsing treat in the song, inspired by desire and obsession. For another taste from Parade Of Light’s new EP, stream infectious Inside My Head below, which erupts extravagantly with volatile choruses, new wavy synths, and glistening instrumentation. Both tracks are exhilarating cuts off Parade Of Lights’ new EP. The new 13 Reasons Why Season 2 soundtrack is available, here. Parade Of Light’s new EP can be found, here.

Rapport is defined as a close and harmonious relationship between people or a group. It’s a word that’s also used to describe an affinity, understanding, or bond. The moment I first listened to Rapport’s Unconscious, I developed more than affinity for the Toronto three piece, a new band who melds 80s pop rock with glossy whirring synthpop on their first single. It’s all very dreamy lustrous, like School Of Seven Bells, but dressed in more peppy rocking, new wave luscious threads then dusted with some frosty sugar. You can keep up with the new trio on Twitter, here.

It’s been almost a year since we last heard from San Francisco’s own Cathedrals, and over three years since they released their acclaimed debut EP Blush on Neon Gold Records. Just as we were starting to wonder whether we’d ever hear from our hometown favorites again (and ready to bawl our eyes out at their absence), the synth and alt pop duo are back with pure sonic gold on new single Hits Me Like a Landslide. Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin even kick the level of their brilliance up several more notches with the exceptional tune. Hits Me Like a Landslide, the first single from a new set of songs they’re finally ready to share with us throughout the rest of this year, features lines lifted from the pages of love letters. It’s also the first single to feature Johnny on lead singles since Cathedrals’ debut single Unbound. Hits Me Like a Landslide is a tidal wave of emotions, a passionately gusting, sonorously soaring synthpop epic that seems to meld CHVRCHES’ electropop with The Naked And Famous’ lush soundscapes and Twin Shadow’s voluminous grandeur. It’s a gloriously gut-punching torrent of tormented anguish, assembled ever so flawlessly with sleek retro synths and the duo’s resounding vocals. DoTheBay premiered the new single last Friday, calling it ‘among the band’s most evocative cuts yet.’ We fully concur with the assessment. Alternate streaming and download links can be found, here. To say we’re head over heels for Cathedrals once again, is an understatement. The same can be said about how excited we are to hear the rest of their new songs.

Though I no longer have a VHS collection at home (all of my movies are on DVD or Blu-ray), there is a bounteous selection of tunes from NYC trio VHS Collection that I will cherish forever. It’s obvious our love for the band will never go obsolete as the indie trio regales us with their latest single, One, a rambunctious outpouring of sleek pulsing electro-rock and beatific new wave. The sweeping, soaring single is an epic first release of 2018 for the ascending band, whom we’ve been praising for well over two years. VHS Collection hits the road in May with a stop in San Francisco at Popscene/the Rickshaw Stop on May 18th. Guess who’s going to be in attendance and already purchased a ticket? Learn more about the tour on their website, here.

Slow burning, sensual purling Deeper Than Oceans is Bravestation’s first single since they signed to renowned New York label AntiFragile, and what an 80s synthpop meets 90s R&B pop swooner it is. The last time we heard from the Toronto outfit was 10 months ago, when they enraptured us with their fluorescent sleek track Up For You. Warm and seductive Deeper Than Oceans is as romantic as it is nostalgic, and it more than raises our excitement levels for that long awaited Bravestation full length, which they’ve been teasing for what feels like a lifetime. Stream more Bravestation via their Soundcloud, here.

If you’re as fond of 80s inspired retrowave and synthpop as we are, then you’re going to love The Bomb. Its dark new wave comes courtesy of Santa Cruz duo Vandal Moon, who’ve even teamed up with rising Oakland project vverevvolf on the song, a very pleasant surprise considering our ever growing love for the recently discovered band. Shades of The Cure and Blaqk Audio bedeck the restlessly enamoring track, while vverevvolf’s vocals add some welcome and contagious heat. The Bomb is lifted from Vandal Moon’s upcoming album Wild Insane, out April 20th. Pre-order on Bandcamp, here.

Los Angeles based duo Lean enraptured us a few months ago with funk tinged rock on Heatwave after having made their acclaimed debut in 2017, and now they’ve already revealed details regarding their debut full length! Years, which will be out on May 25th, features this fantastic first single, Inaction, a twangy chugging The War On Drugs meets retro-hued, infectiously rocking TEN FÉ sort of timeless jam. Stephen Johnson of Lean explains: “‘Inaction’ is different from other Lean songs because it’s not about any specific personal experience or people. It’s just a general impression of how all people are and particularly some of our worst qualities.” Inaction can be found on Apple Music, here, or Spotify, here.

Two long time IHM favorites come together to make sweet, sweet music on HiLo, which really leaves us in much more a “high” than a “low”. Olivver The Kid, who we can’t be more grateful has returned to the music scene lately with new tunes, links up with Los Angeles alt band ARMORS on the nostalgic alt ballad, whose retro-80s veneer and smooth smoky pop is like The Neighbourhood gone The Chain Gang Of 1974. HiLo is an epic soiree, and it pumps us up just when we need it, considering the crazy wild amount of tasks we have to finish before we fly out to Austin in less than 24 hours. Thanks, guys! The magnificent alt pop anthem can also be spinned on Spotify, here.
