In less than two weeks, I’ll finally get to cross “seeing Kllo” off my bucket list, though I can’t promise I won’t end up adding “seeing Kllo a second time” right back on immediately afterwards. We’ve been following along with the duo from Melbourne, Australia for over two years, and we’re ultra excited to finally experience them live when they headline Popscene in San Francisco on June 1st. The “potential” of me coming away from the show even more awestruck than before is more than high. The duo recently returned with a gorgeously stirring new tune named Potential, a soft trickling, tenderly yearning downtempo ballad whose supple R&B pop and mellow beats evoke WET melded into some early BROODS. The translucent heart-render is out now on Ghostly. Stream/download, here

Refs waxes poignantly reflective on gooey melting new tune, Roots, the latest fine single from a NYC based electronic pop duo we’ve been featuring for three prolific years. We indulge in the jazzy, snazzy, creamy, and buttery alongside Refs on their electro-soul styled track. All of a sudden, all I want to do is close my eyes and slow-waltz around the room to their satin crooning and the luxuriantly simmering song, of which Refs states:

‘A side effect of love stories that never fully play out is a looming sense of “if-only”. Roots is about all the meandering semi-truths and ill-advised solutions we lean into and learn from, in the absence of that bloom.’ The tenderly heartrending, gently aching sonnet can also be streamed via Spotify, here.

Let’s cozy up “real close” to this fleecy drifting tune from newcomer HUME, a singer songwriter from the UK. He takes us into a surreal, shadowy world of steamy sensuality on Real Close, his debut release. With a gravelly voice that caresses us softly, HUME serenades us with his R&B soul. Real Close’s tactile palette of gently winding electronica envelopes us in weightless warmth. It’s almost as if HONNE has gone future R&B as HUME sings about infatuation and conflicting feelings. He states that Real Close is about: “…

all those confused, conflicting feelings and not being able to truly tell if it will be something short-lived, or something a little longer.” Real Close can also be streamed/downloaded, here.

It’s not often that a remix of Bon Iver crops up, though we have shared a small handful of them over the years. Justin Vernon’s music can’t be easy to re-imagine, but if anyone can do it flawlessly, it’s Barclay Crenshaw, whom most people would more easily recognize under the name Claude VonStroke, the esteemed founder of Dirtybird Records who was voted #1 DJ in the world not too long ago. The producer has given Bon Iver’s  “715 – CRΣΣKS”, one of my favorites from their last album “22, A Million”, a truly transcendental re-work. Soft high hat rolls graze the surface of the beautifully drifting electronic edit, creating an austerely mesmeric effect next to Justin Vernon’s vocoder treated vocals. Barclay Crenshaw’s remix is a mellow and ambient masterpiece, both soothingly hypnotic and pensively haunting. This brilliant “Barclay Crenshaw White Label Renegade Cut” is available via Bandcamp, here.

Life feels a little bit less solitary and far less lonely when accompanied by marvelous music, which is exactly what Lonely Benson serves up on his fresh new synthpop, chill disco, and psych pop jam, Let It Go. The plush grooving, sultry smoldering tune is the Nashville artist’s first single of the year. It undulates, surges, and swells, all the while winding through an intricate array of incendiary guitar work, jazzy keys, effects-laced vocals, and an infectiously lush, spacey whirring atmosphere. Let It Go arrives alongside the release of Lonely Benson’s Will Pugh produced full-length debut, featuring fan favorites like psychedelic Location and Spotify smash hit Strawberry Afternoons. I had to look up what ‘alprazolam’ is after the utter inebriation artsea brought us on his track. It’s obvious its a pharmaceutical, but I learned from my ‘expert’ google skills that it’s a minor tranquilizer. The name seems fitting for this Brisbane producer’s nebulous future beats dazzler… We find ourselves extensively hypnotized, yet alprazolam is in no way soporific. Instead, it takes us into a murky, dusky wonderland with its watery beats and soft whispers. artsea’s opulent future bass examines the culture of addiction. It delves into a surreal conscience that is in fact, all too real. In this daydream, the world around us seems to move in slow motion above us as we view it from under water, through the lens of rippling tides and reflective waves. You can download artsea’s intoxicating bedrom electronica masterpiece via Toneden, here.

UK producer Luvian, who first won our hearts over over four years ago with his superb remixes, has unveiled a captivating video for his single Rooms, which features Amber on beautifully limber vocals. The airy plinking, supple cantering, and soulful stirring electronic song is the lead single from Luvian’s A Time & Place EP, out now via Ultra. Luvian’s new video is set across several picturesque landscapes. It focuses on the wistfulness of the sea, in contrast to the rebirth of decaying flowers. His new EP is a five-track production that showcases Luvian’s expansive sonic palette, replete with synthetic sounds, guitar riffs, and playful keys. You can find the EP, here.

If there really were a “broken hearts club”, it’d probably be really hard to become a member. There are a lot of broken hearts in this world, and we’re all clamoring for some comfort and respite from the anguish and torment that the affliction brings us. Just remember, we’re not alone, and we have gnash to sooth us with his new lullaby now, too. The California producer surprises us with a chill, acoustic alt-R&B route on “the broken hearts club”. Lonesome guitar strums and gnash’s soft, heartfelt vocals tug at our capacity for empathy and commiseration. Heartbreak has never been more exquisite and endearing. For a moment, we’re actually thankful we get to feel every tiny twinge that comes with heartaches. We wouldn’t want to be left out of this club and miss out on wallowing with gnash. As we dive into a brand new tune from Toronto’s NEW CITY, I feel like we’ve gone full circle. It was almost exactly a year ago that the alt/electro-pop outfit made their debut with Coachella, and now we get to share Getting Closer just as many of my music friends are preparing to make their annual pilgrimage to the festival these next few weekends. NEW CITY’s Coachella was an instant success, as expected, as was their following releases. They’ve since signed to Mosley (Timbaland’s new label) and Universal. Balmy electronica and infectious pop hooks abound on new single Getting Closer, which explores the ups and downs that come with chasing dreams and the courage it takes to trust yourself. The song is a declaration of empowerment, a mellifluous feel good anthem to carry us into the summer months. Getting Closer is available from major outlets, here.
