RIVAH’s name might as well be “riveting”. The Australian artist turned in an effortless performance on debut single Untame late last year, transfixing us with a dusky glistening electro R&B emulsion. The track attracted a whole lot of praise and buzz. RIVAH went on to play her debut shows in NYC and LA last fall, and she’s since shared the local stages with the likes of Willow Beats, Golden Vessel, and SAATSUMA. Transitional Love is her latest release, a breathtaking teaser track developed from a first-take demo vocal and accompanied by a DIY iPhone video released ahead of her next single out in June. It’s a weightless gliding, ethereal soothing pop song with transcendental vocals and beautifully haunting, feathery pulsing production. We’re more than ready for that next single, but we’re going to take our time soaking in this celestial beauty in the meantime. Re-visit our Untame feature, here.

An impeccable fusion of light and shadow, electronica and pop commands our hearts on bittersweet pop aria Keep Me Up from fast rising starlet Charlotte Lawrence. The melancholic aria walks a delicate line between olivia o’brien’s lissome R&B pop and Billie Eilish’s willowy gusting, dreamy ethereal pop.

“I write easier about sad emotions,” says Charlotte Lawrence. “I think it’s so cool to have an upbeat song with dark lyrics. If you tap into an emotion then you can write a whole story. No matter what you’re going through it’s important to take risks with music. I never want to play it safe.” Keep Me Up definitely doesn’t play it safe. It’s breathtakingly personal, a pop confession that deals directly with mental health in a frank way. “I’ve always had anxiety,” she explains. “It’s not something we talk about a lot but people are being more open about their mental health. I felt it was important to talk about it in my music and help other people who might be struggling.”

Charlotte, who also recently collaborated with Sasha Sloan and Nina Nesbitt on Psychopath, has prepared two full EPs to drop later this year. Stream/download Keep Me Up, here.

It’s not often that a remix of Bon Iver crops up, though we have shared a small handful of them over the years. Justin Vernon’s music can’t be easy to re-imagine, but if anyone can do it flawlessly, it’s Barclay Crenshaw, whom most people would more easily recognize under the name Claude VonStroke, the esteemed founder of Dirtybird Records who was voted #1 DJ in the world not too long ago. The producer has given Bon Iver’s  “715 – CRΣΣKS”, one of my favorites from their last album “22, A Million”, a truly transcendental re-work. Soft high hat rolls graze the surface of the beautifully drifting electronic edit, creating an austerely mesmeric effect next to Justin Vernon’s vocoder treated vocals. Barclay Crenshaw’s remix is a mellow and ambient masterpiece, both soothingly hypnotic and pensively haunting. This brilliant “Barclay Crenshaw White Label Renegade Cut” is available via Bandcamp, here.

Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler together on one exquisitely moving song. Really, need I say more? The world is by far “Better Off” now that the two East Coast singer songwriters and producers have united on the twilight ballad, a heart-string tugging, melancholic stirring lament about star-crossed lovers and calamitous love. Chelsea Cutler’s wispy, supple voice and Jeremy Zucker’s poignant crooning transfix us beautifully from a lush ethereal sonic pasture sown with tender guitar strums and softly chiseled, gently floating beats. A sad yet blissful sigh escapes the lips as the final notes of this impeccable tear-jerker fades away. Better Off is available from major outlets, here.

UK producer Luvian, who first won our hearts over over four years ago with his superb remixes, has unveiled a captivating video for his single Rooms, which features Amber on beautifully limber vocals. The airy plinking, supple cantering, and soulful stirring electronic song is the lead single from Luvian’s A Time & Place EP, out now via Ultra. Luvian’s new video is set across several picturesque landscapes. It focuses on the wistfulness of the sea, in contrast to the rebirth of decaying flowers. His new EP is a five-track production that showcases Luvian’s expansive sonic palette, replete with synthetic sounds, guitar riffs, and playful keys. You can find the EP, here.

OTR’s past career as an aerospace engineer seems to transmit right into his current ascent as a compelling producer and musician. He first started to float us into the cosmos with his music via remixes, but he’s since demonstrated his adept skills as a songcrafter on an original named Bliss. And now he’s followed it up with a downtempo electronic ballad named Close, featuring Kai Straw, a cindery vocalist from right here in San Francisco. OTR’s dusky ethereal beats displays his influences, which include producers like Odesza, Petit Biscuit, and Porter Robinson, as well as indie artists like Daughter and Bon Iver. Close is gritty yet atmospheric, a bittersweet haunting and tender stirring electronic composition to soundtrack your late night introspection. Find it on Apple Music, here.

Haulm’s six track EP Stay For Me has been out for a moment, but that in no way means we should let EP track Clean slip by. The Brooklyn based project, a collaboration between vocalist/composer JT Norton and electronic producer Reed Kackley (BAILE), entice and enchant with their chiffon vocals and an ethereal trickling, misty burbling soundscape on Clean. Their downtempo electronica and wispy light vocals remind me of Daniel Woolhouse’s early music as Deptford Goth, but embedded in a nebulous haunting, atmospheric skimming sonic environment akin to some of John Hopkins or even Bonobo’s more chill and ambient constructions. Haulm’s Stay For Me EP can be streamed in full on Soundcloud, here.

Buzzy Lee is certainly attracting a lot of buzz these days, particularly after the Los Angeles based singer songwriter, who’s also the daughter of renowned film ogul Steven Spielberg, released her last single Coolhand. She reunites with acclaimed producer Nicolas Jaar on her latest single, too, adding fuel to that buzz. No Her, a cimmerian indie pop aria, marches slowly and deliberately, a bewitching and other worldly beauty with murky, dusky production and aching, burning guitars. The entrancing songbird explains: “‘No Her’ is about that piece of myself that I’m worried my partner will discover isn’t really there. That there is an ideal ‘her’; someone’s idea of me is different from who I am, and yet, I’m worried the other ‘her’ is the one who has drawn them in… But to be fully honest it’s about not believing someone loved me.” Re-visit our Coolhand feature, here. No Her is lifted from Buzzy Lee’s forthcoming EP Facepaint, out April 27. Pre-order, here

The thought of teflon usually brings to mind something tough and resistant, hard and strong. Yet Cleveland’s Teflon Sega renders us a melted, liquefied mess every time he serenades us with one of his R&B soul ballads. Those feelings bubble to surface yet again as Teflon Sega melts us with his creamy, satiny cooing on new single Closure, a poignant lament of a dreamy electro and velvety R&B track featuring sonic magician YLXR on foggy atmospheric, dusky surreal production duty. Tragic romance and aching heartbreak take a hold of us as we dissolve into this pillowy, dreamy affair. While the closure we seek in life might always evade us, at least we can seek comfort in Teflon Sega and drift into the night feeling a little bit more complete. Closure is a free download, here.
