The Knife’s Heartbeats will forever hold a very special place in my heart. It’s probably one of my all time favorite songs, and I can’t help but love some of the many covers of the track have surfaced in the past sixteen years, too. Autolaser, the prestigious producer who’s worked with the likes of Far East Movement, Yelawolf, Bone Thugs ‘N’ Harmony, and many more esteemed artists in the past, offers up his own re-imagining of the timeless classic. Oslo’s Ester Adele turns in celestial vocals on the glacial glimmering electronic approach on Heartbeats, a dreamy trickling beauty that opens up into a verdant wonderland of skipping beats and lush synths. It feels like we’ve traveled through a magical fantasy land with Autolaser and Ester Adele. It’s an ephemeral journey, but we get to take the ride over and over again by diving back into the exquisite future beats meets indie dance cover, whose ethereal effervescent and cosmic wonder are like M83 gone Odesza.

Who doesn’t love Nena’s 99 Red Balloons, originally 99 Luftballons in German? It’s an utterly infectious frolic, a timeless classic from the 80′s that never seems to get old or obsolete no matter how much time has passed. Swedish producer Oliver Nelson and fellow Swede Tobtok partner up on a revival of the track. They’ve given the endearing tune a bright and airy future funk and tropical disco re-work, featuring vocals by London’s River. 99 Red Balloons is a heartwarming, spirit lifting treat to take with us into the weekend. It’s impossible to be dour or downcast when such a buoyant and jubilant track is coursing through our ears. Grab a copy or stream via alternate platforms, here.

Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek holds a very special place in my heart. Not only was I once incredibly addicted to the brilliant artist’s finely layered, vocoder treated harmonies, but this song was a pivotal part of The O.C.’s soundtrack back in the days when I was obsessed with the show and its tragic plot. So when I saw that rising production talent Bishu had re-worked the track, my heart fluttered with excitement. And I fell hard again for Hide and Seek as I waded into this exceptionally crafted electronic rendering of the song. As much as I’m reeling under a heavy hit of nostalgia, this trap and bass Hide and Seek lifts me out from under that weight with its jarring drops and vigorous chops, leaving me beaming in ecstasy. Bishu created his track as part of his childhood remix series. Download this magnificent chapter, here.

It takes a lot of time to share all the music that we feature, and sometimes, we let the big tunes slide, just because there’s simply not enough time to write up EVERYTHING good. Plus, the well established artists probably don’t need us to help get the word out about tunes. But this one, though it involves bigwigs like Cashmere Cat, Major Lazer, and Tory Lanez, is far too good to leave off our pages. You’d think something involving all three juggernauts would be a very busy, very bustling tune, especially with Cashmere Cat and Major Lazer on deck, but the trio go a more toned down post-EDM/R&B house route on the waxy seductive jam. In fact, Miss You is a cover re-work of Palmistry’s phenomenal single Lifted, which you can stream here, if you need a refresher on how amazing that song is. Cashmere Cat, Major Lazer, and Tory Lanez’s Miss You arrives by lyric video, and its bass rumbling warmth and velutinous drawl are reminiscent of rising Moving Castle star SAKIMA. I’m in love with this instrumental track from AllttA, a production duo that involves some fine musicians, including producer 20syl from French turntablists C2C and MR. J. MEDEIROS from Los Angeles based band Knives. The pair are in the midst of a single series named Facing Giants, from which a new track is revealed every Wednesday. Disarm (fg. VI) is their latest release, and I’m sure you recognized its inspiration from its opening chords straightaway. They’ve given a piano version of Bonnie Raitt’s infinitely romantic classic I Can’t Make You Love Me a gorgeously textured, brassy flaring hip hop and electronica cover re-work. You can listen to AllttA’s Facing Giants single series on Soundcloud, here. Snag the instrumentals from major outlets, here.

Last year, Mura Masa released one of the year’s best electronic albums, and a quintessential track off the release is no doubt Lovesick, which Parisian duo SACRE has re-vamped on a brilliant cover. They inundate the original electronic track with plenty of their sparkly glitz and funky flourishes on an absolutely stunning re-work. It’s a frisky yet sleek, opalescent and French house infused rendering that kind of feels like a seamless encounter with Mura Masa, SBTRKT, C2C, and Justice, all at once. Lest you forgot how good SACRE’s originals are, make sure to re-visit them on Soundcloud, here.

We were utterly stoked when Diplo and MØ reunited last month on Get It Right, lifted from the soundtrack for Diplo’s documentary Give Me Future. The bluesy sprawling electronic track has since spawned some fabulous remixes, including this aerated trap cover edit by Italian producer BLENDER. We’re engulfed into a vast and wondrous, vivacious and playful soundscape by BLENDER’s resounding chords and staccato beats on this invigorating edit, on which he even lays down fresh captivating vocals. BLENDER more than “gets it right” with this bright and airy future trap remix, which is a free download, here.

Pep.B, or Joseph Busa, is a fresh new Australian electronic producer on our radar, even though it looks like he’s been dropping many lit electronic tracks for the past few years. He grabs a hold of our ears and leaves us gasping for air with a killer re-work of TLC classic, No Scrubs. Ritzy chic house meets luscious future bass and spine tingling trap on the resplendent remix. Pep.B breathes new life into this blast from the past anthem, which is a free download, here. For another dose of Pep.B’s creative genius, check out his gritty jarring trap and bass original with Brandon Jonak, Purp, below.

I had to pick my jaw off the floor when I encountered a brand new track from Chicago’s Autograf earlier today. I know they’re versatile chameleons in the electronic arena, but I never expected they’d offer up a cover of Nirvana’s classic hit, Smells Like Teen Spirit. Queen Sessi lays down celestial vocals on the expansive electronic re-imagining of the grunge rock song. This is a Smells Like Teen Spirit I could have never fathomed, a beautifully profound, meditative sprawling ambient electronic and organic house take on the legendary track. Smells Like Teen Spirit seems to be Autograf’s final gift to us in 2017, and they’ve made it a sweet free download, here.

Charli XCX’s Boys is undeniably one of this year’s best pop songs, and its video has also driven as much discourse, tributes, and adulation as any other music video in 2017. Though there has been a plethora of fine remixes and covers of the track, we definitely did not expect a new rework at the end of the year from alt-R&B and hip hop trailblazers THEY.! But that’s exactly what the duo have done to close out their sensational year. They released their critically acclaimed debut album Nü Religion: HYENA earlier this year, and now they’ve infused Boys with a copious dose of their R&B influenced slinky seductive allure, capped off with smooth cooing. THEY., who are signed to Mind of a Genius Records along fellow vanguards like ZHU, Gallant, Klangstof, and Kwaye,, will surely continue to break new ground and innovate new music in 2018. Their remix of Boys is available as a free download, here.
