Pep.B, or Joseph Busa, is a fresh new Australian electronic producer on our radar, even though it looks like he’s been dropping many lit electronic tracks for the past few years. He grabs a hold of our ears and leaves us gasping for air with a killer re-work of TLC classic, No Scrubs. Ritzy chic house meets luscious future bass and spine tingling trap on the resplendent remix. Pep.B breathes new life into this blast from the past anthem, which is a free download, here. For another dose of Pep.B’s creative genius, check out his gritty jarring trap and bass original with Brandon Jonak, Purp, below.

TLC hits will forever hold a special place in my heart. Those songs soundtracked some very memorable moments back in the 90′s. during some very formative years. Los Angeles production wizard DR FRESCH revisits TLC on his latest release, a track named No Love. This TLC is revved up, a high energy club spectacular that incorporates bouncy house and edgy trap. The stabbing banger is a frenzy of an invigorating dance track and the perfect lead in to weekend festivities. The producer explains this his goal was to take elements of 90′s hip hop and R&B and place them within the context of his “future ghetto” style. He chose to sample TLC’s No Scrubs since it’s such a true representation of 90′s R&B culture. This melding of past and future gives us a very innovative and imaginative take on R&B, one that injects me with rampant energy. DR FRESCH’s No Love is a free download, here.

TLC’s No Scrubs brings a rush of memories back from the late 90′s and early 2000′s. It’s a song we all knew the word to, singing along whenever we had a chance. Our love of TLC bloomed ever more after No Scrubs, and it made us ever sadder when Left Eye tragically left us. Today, Nashville indie pop starlet CAPPA gives us a slick and glowing cover of No Scrubs that pays fitting homage to the original but takes on a glossy new coat of electronic pop richness delivered by producer Jon Santana. CAPPA’s ever alluring breathy vocals glide effortlessly over luxuriously warm synths and entrancingly playful chops. It’s a very different No Scrubs that manifests sassy and coquettish in a very different manner from the original, and it’s wonderfully hooking and sultrily intoxicating.

TLC – Meant To Be

October 8, 2013

I can’t help enjoying Meant To Be, the brand new song from good ol’ TLC (minus Left Eye… RIP). Listening to T-Boz and Chilli brings me right back to the 90’s. To say TLC was a pivotal girl band of that decade and the early 2000’s is an understatement. TLC is releasing a greatest hits compilation later this month titled 20, and new track Meant To Be is off that album. Their movie CrazySexCool: The TLC Story will also premiere on October 21 on VH1. I’ll be DVR-ing it. I’ve wondered before how things would have turned out if Left Eye never passed on.

I’m not sure why I never posted about Bastille, a great South London indie pop/rock band that’s certainly up and coming, but it’s time to do so now. Their debut full length album Bad Blood dropped this week in the UK, and I’m getting it. There isn’t much out from the new album yet, but here’s a cool mashup/cover song No Angels which features Ella Eyre (the same Ella Eyre that was on Rudimental’s new song Waiting All Night) off their mixtape Other People’s Heartache Pt 2. The majority of the track is an interesting combo of The xx’s Angels and TLC’s No Scrubs. And boy does it work pretty well. Below are a few other choice pieces from that mixtape.

And here’s a short preview off the coming original debut album.

New Zealand synthpop singer songwriter Zowie has been pretty quiet on the scene lately, but she decided to break her silence with a dirty 30 minute mixtape titled “Bad-Ass Bitch”. In 30 minutes, she showcases a number of strong female musicians. Bad-ass! Her description of the mix:

These female artists are all full of sass and intelligence and I admire each of them for different reasons. There is a dirty hip hop vibe to this mix tape which was inspired by releasing our free hip hop nasty track ‘You Did The NONO’ a couple of weeks ago and opening for Nicki Minaj on the same night! We wanted each track to flow in a way where it sounded like the song before was part of the next song rather than a stop start tape.

Tracklist:

1. M.I.A – XR2
2. Kid Sister – Right Hand High
3. Rihanna – Cockiness
4. Azealia Banks – 212 (feat Lazy Jay)
5. Zowie – Smash It (The Slips Remix)
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Gold Lion (Nick Zinner Remix)
7. Peaches – Billionaire
8. Rihanna – Fresh Off The Runway
9. TLC – Silly Ho

Ready for a blast from the past? Depending on which decade you were born in, TLC may have been a huge milestone in your music soundtracked life. Their 1999 album Fan Mail was a timeless one, and it brings back so many memories when I hear anything off it nowadays. Those were good songs, by a wonderful, ground breaking all female hip hop band. If you were like me, the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was heartbreaking and far too early. RIP, Left Eye. One of the stand out songs off Fan Mail was Unpretty. The song not only sounded 90’s delicious, but it helped many young ladies overcome self doubt and appearance issues. This beauty of a song received a brand new remix treatment by NYC duo Follow Me. The new version is a chill, electric rendition that updates the track to the current 90’s throwback based sound that has been making a strong comeback. Note, I said “updates” and not “upgrades”. The original is still untouchable. ❤ you, TLC.
