British drum and bass and soulful electronica collective Rudimental teamed up with an impressive list of collaborators on their new single, These Days, which is lifted from their forthcoming third album. Soul pop sensation Jess Glynne, rap mogul Macklemore, and rising R&B soul artist Dan Caplen join forces with Rudimental on the magnificent hymnal. The brassy soulful anthem is available, here. Hopefully, the arrival of These Days is a sign of many more new Rudimental songs and collaborations to come as we await further news regarding the new album.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have revealed a new one via a playful video to follow up on Ed Sheeran featuring Growing Up last month. This one seems to take a page from Bruno Mars and Uptown Funk with the songs vintage groove and the video’s fresh dance moves. It’s even called Downtown, and it’s one fun, catchy treat full of flamboyant bombast.

I’ve been wondering lately what Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been up to, after pretty much taking over the world several years ago with their Heist debut. They’ve been rather quiet since the whole Grammys hoopla. Turns out, Macklemore has been busy being a new dad. And the experience has inspired him to pen a new song with Ryan Lewis named Growing Up (Sloane’s Song). Plus, the tender new tune features none other than Ed Sheeran. Cue wild, shrieking screams of boundless happy Sheeran fans. Growing Up is a soft, gentle song, with the horn imbued, gospel-y charm of world conquering Same Love. It’s a generously free download on Macklemore’s site, and the first track revealed off an impending sophomore album.

DJ Earworm’s United State of Pop 2013

December 3, 2013

imageUmmmm. Happy New Year, guys?! Remember DJ Earworm used to release his annual tradition mashup a couple days before New Years? Seems he releases his mix earlier and earlier every year. It’s always fun to catch his mashup, though my fave United State of Pops were probably a couple of the earlier ones, sound wise and thematically. It’s still fun to catch all the tunes in the mix, especially the songs and/or artists that were featured on I Heart Moosiq over the past couple years that went on to much deserved and predicted huge success. You know… Lorde, Capital Cities, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, etc… Now, can someone do a World State of Pop 2013 or a UK State of Pop 2013?

A mashup of the 25 biggest hits during 2013 in the U.S.

Featuring:
Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc – Wake Me Up
Bruno Mars – When I Was Your Man
Capital Cities – Safe & Sound
Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams – Get Lucky
Eminem feat. Rihanna – The Monster
Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly – Cruise
Imagine Dragons – Radioactive
Imagine Dragons – Demons
Jay-Z feat. Justin Timberlake – Holy Grail
Justin Timberlake – Mirrors
Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z – Suit & Tie
Katy Perry – Roar
Lady Gaga – Applause
Lorde – Royals
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton – Can’t Hold Us
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz – Thrift Shop
Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball
Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop
OneRepublic – Counting Stars
P!nk feat. Nate Ruess – Just Give Me A Reason
Rihanna – Stay
Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell & T.I. – Blurred Lines
Swedish House Mafia feat. John Martin – Don’t You Worry Child
Taylor Swift – I Knew You Were Trouble
Will.I.Am feat. Britney Spears – Scream And Shout

OFFICIAL VID: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Can’t Hold Us feat. Ray Dalton

Of course, one of the biggest video releases of the day is none other than this clip for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Can’t Hold Us featuring Ray Dalton. It’s an epic clip, as always. It’s a cool version of the track with a grand opening sequence. I was just watching some of the MTV Movie Awards last night and caught Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of Can’t Hold Us live. I can’t help but feel so vindicated that they’ve skyrocketed to such incredible success and fame after I’ve been raving about them for over two years or more (since before I Heart Moosiq ever existed). Glad the world caught on, and well deserved. Can’t Hold Us if off their debut album Heist, which I waited such a very long time for. For those that only know them for Thrift Shop, they’re so much more than that. SO much more. I’ve read so many negative articles after Thrift Shop exploded. Educate yourself with their other DIY work over the years first, please. I guess I’ll never get to catch them at a tiny club ever again. All good! Seeing them a couple times at small spots was satisfying enough! Way to go, guys!

Ed Sheeran & Passenger No Diggity vs Thrift Shop mashup

March 12, 2013

This is pretty cool. Ed Sheeran and Passenger did a live acoustic mashup of Blackstreet’s Diggity and Macklemore x Ryan Lewis’ Thrift Shop (though it’s mostly Diggity).

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

December 4, 2012

I love NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. Having Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on the show only proves how talented the NPR folks believe them to be too. I whole heartedly agree. They’ve gone such a long way. It must have been loads of fun to have them in the office. The boys did a 3 song set in the intimate space, including Same Love, Thrift Shop, and Can’t Hold Us. Jump to the magnificent performance below, or read what NPR wrote in the video blurb first:

Tears and laughter in the span of about 15 minutes — that’s what’s so astonishing about these Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs.

The first time I heard “Same Love,” it brought tears to the eyes of a roomful of people, myself included. The song is about equality, specifically gay rights, with an unambiguous message: “It’s human rights for everybody / There is no difference.” Then, in a flip of a backing-track beat, Macklemore (a.k.a. Ben Haggerty) sings about wearing a velour jumpsuit and some house slippers, “grandpa style.”

The contrast in these songs, “Same Love” and “Thrift Shop,” makes the levity all that much memorable; as producer, Ryan Lewis is a master at the hook and clever with the melody. But this Tiny Desk Concert didn’t end there: The live, sweet, soulful sounds of singer Ray Dalton belting, “Like the ceiling can’t hold us” had Macklemore standing on my desk and shaking the dust off the ceiling tiles. Watching this video fills me with that inspirational feeling we shared watching it happen: I’m still cleaning dust around my desk, but it only makes me smile. –BOB BOILEN
