We’ve told the story countless times now, having shared so many of Mating Ritual’s songs over the past year or two. But let’s take a trip down memory lane anyway. Ryan Marshall Lawhon began the current project after he ended his last one, Pacific Air, with his brother. And we were sad when it happened… Very sad. But then Mating Ritual came along, and we fell in love again, and now all we can do is thank the stars that Lawhon has continued down this enthralling path. Plus, since the last time we’ve featured Mating Ritual, Lawhon has reunited with his brother, making this the very same duo that enamored us back in those Pacific Air days! Right now, Mating Ritual is preparing to release their second album Light Myself On Fire. Its title track is a jaunty, peppy prancer with contagious oh-ohs, Future Islands-like waggish synths, and a whole lot of scratchy vocal vigor. Light Myself On Fire is the third track Mating Ritual has unveiled from the new 9-track album which will arrive on May 4th via the band’s own label Smooth Jaws. Ah, “drunk”, a state both physical and emotional that I’ve placed myself in far too many times before in the past. I suppose it’s far better for both mind and body to be inebriated by Mating Ritual instead, who’s dropped a gauzy burbling new piece named Drunk. We hover along with Ryan Marshall Lawhon as he waxes melodic over being intoxicated on love before we get a jolt of surprise as Drunk opens up with verve and vigor a third of the way in. Mating Ritual spins us on our head with the shift. Our senses seem heightened, our vivacity spiked. Drunk is an enrapturing ride and fascinating taste off of Mating Ritual’s highly anticipated two volume debut album. Volume One arrived back in January, and the second volume will arrive in June to complete the release.

Ryan Marshall Lawhon followed up now defunct project Pacific Air with a new one Mating Ritual over two years ago, which was sweet music to our ears after mourning the departure of that prior band. We swiftly fell in love with Mating Ritual’s rich infectious alt pop, and we’re more than jubilant that the Los Angeles based band will be releasing a debut album named “How You Gonna Stop It?” on May 19th. In truth, we’ve already heard half of the debut since Mating Ritual released the first six songs of the album as Volume One in January. The band embark’s on the second half of this adventure with the first taste from Volume Two, a lush thrumming single named Second Chance. An M83 like sprightliness imbues the balmy clattering song, whose summery warmth also call to mind St. Lucia. “How You Gonna Stop It?” will be released on the band’s own label Smooth Jaws.

Mating Ritual, Ryan Marshall Lawhon’s fascinating and rousing project that came out of the ashes of Pacific Air a couple years back, has linked up with Los Angeles songbird and prior collaborator Lizzy Land for a lavish new treat. Night Lies swoops skyward, a saccharine eruption of glittering enchanting synthpop. Moonlit exuberant Night Lies carries some M83 aerodynamics alongside a St. Lucia meets Savoir Adore verdant rainforest richness. It drops in as the second taste from Mating Ritual’s debut full length, “How You Gonna Stop It?“, a two volume release with the first edition arriving January 24th and Volume 2 due to land in April. IHM has been a devout follower of Mating Ritual ever since the project arose out of the ashes of beloved duo Pacific Air over two long years ago. Needless to say, news of a debut album is cause for celebration. “How You Gonna Stop It?” will arrive as two six-track volumes in 2017, and we get to hear its vibrant title track right now. “How You Gonna Stop It?” is restlessly lively, a bright and colorful burst of lofty alt pop. It’s been obvious to us for a long time now that nothing’s going to stop Mating Ritual. It’s going to be a sweet 2017 soundtracked by Ryan Marshall Lawhon’s exuberant tunes.

A sophomore EP is fabulous news for fans of Mating Ritual (like me), the project that arose out of one half of the ashes of Pacific Air. On October 7th, Ryan Marshall Lawhon will be releasing Fall Collection 16′, and our first taste from the record is a catchy soaring, rhythmic enchanting marriage of carefree pop and exuberant indie rock named Look The Other Way. I’m rather jealous of the folks who got to see Mating Ritual at the Echoplex this past weekend down in Los Angeles. Hopefully, a new EP means Mating Ritual will be making his way up north sometime soon.
