I somehow missed some massive news from British quartet Zola Blood last week despite our dedication to the band’s sophisticated sound that melds progressive rock, art rock, and atmospheric electronica in a way that often reminds me of Radiohead, Phoria, and Wild Beasts. Let’s make good on the big announcement now. Are you ready? Zola Blood has finally announced a debut album! They’ve been hard at work crafting the album this past year, and they’ll be releasing Infinite Games on May 26th via Pond Life. As if that isn’t spectacular enough news, Zola Blood has also unveiled a glorious new single named Nothing. But this song is EVERYTHING. Elastic bouncing, techno flavored alt electronica spurns us into a guttural dance frenzy. Nothing is a dazzling thriller, a dark brooding journey into the deepest recesses of our minds and the cores of our quivering, pumping hearts.

More good loving is indeed in the stars when it comes to British quartet Zola Blood and their first mesmeric tune of the year. Zola Blood has been entrancing us with their moody indietronica for some time now, and they tighten the spell they hold on us with Good Love, a lush atmospheric, progressive thrumming beauty that evokes a combination of Radiohead, Phoria, and Wild Beasts. There’s no static moment to be found on this halcyon weaving song despite its hypnotic cadence and steady beats. Good Love is a taste from Zola Blood’s forthcoming debut album, a record I find myself incredibly excited to hear. Infinite Games is expected to arrive later this year.

I didn’t think we were going to hear from British quartet Zola Blood before the year closed out, as it’s been half a year since their last single and I figured they had to be hard at work recording their debut album. Yet, here we are, in the final days of December, mesmerized by a new single named Islands, a taste of said album. The rich throbbing, clapping entrancing, and florid lilting song blurs the line between electronic pop and art rock. At times, Islands reminds me of Local Natives and early Wild Beasts with a sprinkle of Phoria, but far more gummy viscous and ambient atmospheric. Zola Blood’s surprise end of year present is a pensive beauty. My enthusiasm for debut album Infinite Games, expected in early 2017, surges stronger than ever.

It’s been some time since we last heard from London quartet Zola Blood, but they make a striking re-entrance with a new song and the announcement of a debut album, Infinite Games. Album cut Heartbeat’s ambient electronics are haunting entrancing. The song’s muted beats and atmospheric production reflect the very aching throbs of my own heart. This progressive cut of forward thinking alt electronica leaves my skin tingling and my mind mired in deep thought. Zola Blood’s full length, which they’ve self produced, is due out later this year.

Zola Blood is ever captivating and entrancing on the London quartet’s latest, a dark brooder named Pieces Of The Day. Its ominously droning synths and dense atmosphere create a deeply pensive and skin tingling alt and electropop experience. Wild Beasts like melodramatics and SOHN like intense production come together to arrest mind and soul like a complex, other worldly dream full of ghostly apparitions. Pieces Of The Day is the magnificently undulating second single from Zola Blood’s forthcoming double A-side.

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything fresh from London’s Zola Blood, but how can I forget how immensely moving and cinematic their beautiful, ruminative music can be? Sure enough, new song Play Out is an ambient, dreamy, and meditative piece that simmers with a haunting, brooding depth. Play Out is like a Wild Beasts meets Thom Yorke organic and dynamic gem, all topped off with some HONNE like satin vocals. Hopefully, the new track is a sign of a new EP or LP to come this year, on the heels of 2014′s excellent debut EP Meridian. The song will be released as a single on September 5th via Pond Life Songs.

OFFICIAL VID: Zola Blood – Meridian

March 5, 2015

London quartet Zola Blood released an official video for a song I loved very dearly last year, Meridian. I guess I have a soft spot for moody electronic pop songs, because Meridian is the perfect blend of ensnaring, brooding sentiment and haunting minimalist production, particularly when capped off with ruminative strings and satiny vocals. The captivating and unique video for the song was shot on the island of Hydra in Greece, staring ex team Great Britain Anastasija Bates. Meridian is the title track off Zola Blood’s stunning debut EP, available to stream in full, here.
