I’ve been addicted to Yoodoo Park and his brother’s project GRMLN for quite some time. They always take me back to prior decades with their scuzzy rock and fuzzy power pop. War is yet another glorious throwback jam. This time around, GRMLN gives us a jaunty jam with a bit of crunchy Brit pop flare that even evokes The Strokes. The Southern California based duo will be releasing a new EP entitled Discovery this Friday, and punchy buoyant War is a superb preview that kindles much excitement for the release. Discovery can be pre-ordered now from Bandcamp.

Last year, Yoodoo Park’s brother joined him on his Southern California based project GRMLN. This year, they plan on releasing a new EP together named Discovery. The record’s lead single, 27 Kids, might be the most crisp polished and mellifluously irresistible tune the pair have offered us yet. Its scuzzy power pop and brisk hooking alt rock tendencies remind me of the late 90′s and early 2000′s, as GRMLN’s music oft does. New EP Discovery is due to arrive on April 7th.

Southern California’s GRMLN recently went from being a solo project to being a duo consisting of founder Yoodoo Park and his brother. But today, I encountered a newly uploaded song on Yoodoo Park’s Soundcloud, a lo-fi dream pop and indie rock gem named “over you”. I’m guessing it’s under his actual name to avoid confusion as to whether it’s a GRMLN track involving his brother, though I can’t be positive. Either way, over you is a beaut, a bedroom surf punk ambler that reminds me of Oakland’s Day Wave. I’m suddenly beset by much warm summer nostalgia.

Converse is putting together a compilation of music for the winter season. Noise To The World 2 is out January 5th on their Soundcloud and on limited free vinyl in their stores. I’ve already received a number of Christmas songs over the past weeks, and now that it’s December, I suppose it’s time for the wintry holiday music to really pick up. The album features contributions by the likes of Dum Dum Girls, Dear Tick, Iamsu, and GRMLN. I always find something so endearing about GRMLN, aka Yoodoo Park, and the Southern California artist’s 90’s emo flavored slacker rock music. GRMLN, the 90’s emo channeling alt act out of SoCal fronted by Yoodoo Park, had the courage to take on Cyndi Lauper’s over covered Time After Time. At first, I was thinking, oh boy, a Time After Time cover, what can you really do with that to make it stand out? Everyone and their mothers covered this tune back in the day, particularly live at shows. At one of the very first concerts I went to over 15 years ago, I watched Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty (spelled Matchbox 20 at the time and touring in support of excellent debut Yourself Or Someone Like You) cover this song in the encore for his daughter. It was moving. Many people teared up. But it’s been done SO many times. Well, kids. GRMLN does a stellar job on the cover, making it all his own, while keeping that universally loved and recognized melody and the sing along lyrics intact. The lo-fi acoustic cover is some delightfully endearing bliss.

Let’s go glorifying punk with GRMLN’s latest, an angst ridden single aptly named Jaded. The SoCal project, lead by Yoodoo Park, had previously caught me in their head banging, wonderfully indulgent web with such nostalgia evoking, 90’s emo alt music. Jaded continues to lure me in with its grungy lo-fi goodness. GRMLN’s sophomore album Soon Away arrives on September 16 on Carpark Records.
