I never expected to be blessed with a collaboration involving Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ charismatic and fierce frontwoman Karen O and British soul artist Michael Kiwanuka, two musicians I respect and revere greatly, but here we are, jamming out to dusty drawling “YO! MY SAINT”, a song which appears in Kenzo’s Spring/Summer campaign video. There’s a Tarantino-esque quality to the song. Karen O’s lo-fi Crush Songs styled rock and Michael Kiwanuka’s soulful rock are unexpectedly complementary on the song. You can watch the Kenzo film below, which also stars Dirty Beach’s Alex Zhang Hungtai. “YO! MY SAINT” will be released as a limited edition 7-inch single in two formats, a 250 pressing which will be available only on Karen O’s webstore and a limited run of 1000 available in Kenzo stores worldwide, starting on January 22.

Nowadays, in the influential, colossal world of video gaming, music plays a large role, too. We’ve seen how incredible some of the soundtracks for certain games have been. Despite this, I did not expect the latest Tomb Raider game to sign on the great Karen O for its soundtrack. Karen O pens and delivers a glorious new tune for Rise Of The Tomb Raider named I Shall Rise. It’s a fiery slice of cabaret theatrics and Spaghetti Western dramatics. Yes, Karen O is super rad on the ferocious, dauntless song. Rise Of The Tomb Raider releases on November 10th. Gamer boys and girls are going to eat it up in joy.

Worlds collided when Glass Animals revealed a brand new track today named Gold Lime. The UK band was one of my top indie darlings of 2014, and I caught them live many times, enjoying their slinky music and intoxicating performance each and every time. They also proved themselves very adept at delivering covers of other acts’ music, as many found out when they released their cover of Kanye’s Love Lockdown, bringing their own signature sound to the colossal hit. Today’s Gold Lime is an incredible cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Gold Lion, imbued with Eryka Badu’s The Healer. Consider me mind blown. Glass Animals once again creates a unique sound with the conglomeration of music, a potpourri of trip hop, indie rock, and soul that slithers and prowls viscously. The cover was offered up as a celebration of the fact that Glass Animals will be playing Central Park Summer Stage in New York on August 9th, which they’re much excited about.

Karen O – Rapt

July 28, 2014

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited that the always amazing Karen O is dropping a debut solo album soon. Plus, this means we get to catch her and her crazy stage antics live again, when she goes on tour. The last time I saw her live at Outside Lands Music Festival, she was practically deep throating the mic while dressed in the craziest outfit ever. Her new album, Crush Songs, comes out on September 9 via Julia Casablancas’ label Cult. Rapt is the charming first taste off the album, a demure, stripped down gem. Despite its gentleness, the lyrics still bespeaks of Karen O’s rocking, free spirited attitude. The video for the track stars Karen O herself, drifting around serenely underwater, as if the need for oxygen does not exist.

A surprise cover that came out of today is this fun rendition of Bob Marley classic I Shot The Sheriff by duo N.A.S.A. Music and Karen O, of all artists. I would’ve never thought of Marley and Karen O (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs) together, but now that this has happened and the track turned out so groovy, I must say, it does make some sense. What doesn’t Karen O do, anyway? It’s a bubbly, funky, synth heavy version for boogeying your way around a neon dance floor.

Some of you may have already listened to this little beauty, but it’s so lovely that I must share it regardless of the belated timing. Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs wrote this gentle ditty as a contribution to the soundtrack for a star studded Spike Jonze film coming out soon titled Her. I’m actually really looking forward to checking that film out. You can hear snippets of Karen O on the trailer for the film, so I was already looking forward to hearing more of the sure to be incredible soundtrack. Stream The Moon Song above, and get ready to be swept away by the lullaby.

OFFICIAL VID: Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Despair

June 24, 2013

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have finally released their latest video for Mosquito track Despair, which they’ve been touting as the first ever music video filmed at the tippy top of the Empire State Building in New York City! Despair is a beautifully haunting track off the great album that was so eagerly anticipated by many. It’s a track that begins oh so hushed, with only Karen O’s sexy, magnetic voice beckoning and floating a cappella for nearly two minutes before the instruments kick in and the song takes air and lifts gorgeously. The top of the Empire State Building is a befitting choice for this song.
