With a name like Death Team, you almost expect something incredibly macabre and gothy from this Swedish duo, but it’s a rather gutsy vivacious form of electropop that they give us on new single Work. The Stockholm pair fuse hip hop, dancehall, and pop on their high octane jam, a bright hooking anthem reminiscent of Charli XCX (who happens to be a fan), MØ, and Elliphant. If you ever feel like procrastinating instead of doing what needs to be done, toss this song on the speakers and you’ll be injected with fresh doses of ambition and drive. But since we’ve just begun a new weekend, forget work, just dance.

There’s been a flurry of RiRi remixes in the machine these days, particularly of ubiquitous hit Work, but this one certainly stands out from the pack. New Swedish producer Anders Young makes his debut on a buoyantly bouncing interpretation of the song, blending future vibes with, of all things, drum and bass. This a combo that we don’t get to hear often enough, and Anders Young takes us to heaven with the blithe and airy edit. Snag the remix, here.

The sophisticated and jazzy soul on Charlotte Day Wilson’s Work is spellbinding and breathtaking. The 23 year old singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto literally stopped me in my tracks as I was attempting to complete some tasks at work. I set everything aside and gave Work my full attention, lulled in by the musician’s heavy hearted vocals on the sensual slow burner. Rich gospel and mournful blues swallow me up whole, evoking within me a picture of an uphill battle, its exhausting and punishing nature like that of hustling in a chain gang of days long gone. Shuffling drums and somber organ add to the song’s powerful exploration of courage that comes through tenacity. Through obstacles, we build strength and character. Through Charlotte Day Wilson, we get a taste of that empowering determination in a very intoxicating and heartfelt fashion. Purchase this young rising artist’s brilliant new song from iTunes.

Rihanna & Drake’s Work is obviously one of the most popular mainstream singles of the moment. Work is also spawning a growing list of covers and remixes, out of which I find irresistible this track, both a cover and a remix. German producer Koni must really enjoy remixing covers, after all, his last buzz stirring track is a remix of Gabrielle’s cover of Coldplay’s Adventure of a Lifetime. I’m certainly not complaining, because his new remix of Shaun Reynolds and Emma Heesters’ Work is a glowing bundle of deep tropical house. Download the uplifting, summery gem for free, here.

Off a compilation collection titled WORK from the label Other People comes this song, A Pixel, by New York based, German producer Visuals. The whimsical, minimalist electronic pop treat is wonderfully catchy and woozy. Guess who’s involved in the creation of this tune? DARKSIDE! That’s right, that genius of a man named Nicolas Jaar produced the song, and his Darkside partner, David Harrington, turned in some guitar duty on the tune. WORK will be out on September 28.

OFFICIAL VID: 1,2,3 – Scared But Not That Scared

May 18, 2012

Pittsburgh indie rock band’s new song Scared But Not That Scared is a great one. Below is their just released video for the track. The quirky video addresses the controversy and dark side of cults and blind loyalty. I was first tuned into 1,2,3 when I heard their brilliant track Work, which I’ve added below as well. It’s a real treat.

Heard this on TV just a bit ago and had to look it up. Great song from Pittburgh duo 1,2,3! Super catchy, great instrumentals. Did a rapid check of some other work by them, and the song Work is no fluke, other tracks seem to sound good too.
