Poignant and bittersweet is the retro soulful pop found in Crying, a song from Speak In Rhythms, an album that Carmanah dropped last month. The trio, who hails from Victoria, Canada, bewitch us with their dusty lilting tune and spectacular vocals by lead singer Laura Mina. The 60s styled ballad would fit right into a Twin Peaks episode with its vintage charm and Roadhouse ready magnetism. A hint of Teddy Sinclair and a touch of early Cults also imbue the track, though there’s far more of a classic a throwback aura. Making me fall even harder for the song is the aching guitar solo. You can stream Speak In Rhythms in full on Soundcloud, here.

Trust me, not one molecule of your body is going to want to “cringe” the moment you dive into this sensational song from new Neon Gold signing Matt Maeson. NYC based label Neon Gold has always been one of my favorites, turning out one after another phenomenal rising project to delight our ears. In fact, I’ve practically made the label’s annual SXSW showcase a weekend tradition in my past few years of attending the fest in Austin. My love for the label continues to grow as they present us with an instantaneously infectious ballad from Matt Maeson. Cringe is an alt pop meets gritty rock twister with the perfect infusion of dusty sincere, vintage soulful charm. It’s a colossal first single more than worthy of spotlighting. Come early 2017, Matt Maeson will be putting out his debut EP, Who Killed Matt Maeson. We’ll be zealously awaiting more tidbits from that release.

Here to melt you in a way Sam Smith might is Scottish crooner A-L-X, with his latest, Timebomb. The saccharine, soulful song carries a rough, woozy quality that makes the song oh so deliciously vintage sounding. Bluesy guitars and a hypnotizing crunchiness sweep me away to another time and place, plus A-L-X’s falsettos are wonderfully swooning, too.

For some truly haunting downtempo electronic music, sit back, stop everything you’re doing, and listen to Atlanta based producer Feverkin’s magical Sinking, featuring ethereal, ghostly vocals by Nori. Don’t forget to breath as the song takes you both into the future and the past, with its scratchy record like vintage quality, paired with an eerie yet beautiful minimalist production style. The violins are breathtakingly mournful, the pianos crisp and tender.

This summer, an actress by the name of Karen Black passed away. She was a legendary figure in Hollywood films during the 1970’s. Before her death, she contributed her vocals to this Cass McCombs beauty named Brighter, and what a bittersweet track it is, especially in light of the circumstances. Singer songwriter CassMcCombs is set to release a double album come October 15 titled Big Wheel and Others on Domino Records, and Brighter is one of the tracks off the release. The bluegrassy tune is a dreamy journey that took me far, far away from my desk. As someone who loves the tragic, vintage Hollywood aspect that Lana Del Rey brings to her work, this surely hits the mark, perhaps even more accurately and authentically than Lana ever could. It is Karen Black, after all. Don’t worry, Lana. I still love you.

Matt Berninger (The National) – I’ll See You In My Dreams (cover)

Oh boy, this is absolutely delightful. Boardwalk Empire is one of my favorite cable television series in HBO. I can’t wait for the next season to begin soon. One of the super cool things about the show is that they sign up some pretty awesome artists to cover classic standards for the show soundtrack. Matt Berninger (of The National) did this immense cover of 1925 song I’ll See You In My Dreams by Isham Jones and the Ray Miller Orchestra. In Berninger’s version, he’s backed by Vince Giordano And The Nighthawks. The wonderful rendition is perfect. Matt Berninger’s vocals fit the song brilliantly. The song is on the Boardwalk Empire Volume 2 compilation.
