Wet leather normally doesn’t sound very appealing. Soggy, stinky, and sticky come to mind. But when it comes to NYC indie mainstays Wet Leather, there’s nothing more appealing than the band’s genre blurring tunes. While prior singles like Too Serious and Shame tend to remind me of bands like Hot Chip, Joywave, or Talking Heads, Wet Leather’s new single IWMU is more like a krautrock infused cross between The War On Drug’s twangy heartland rock and TEN FÉ’s vintage flavored jaunty rock. Its exhilarating kicks, punchy rhythm, and propulsive beats take off with animated energy. We dive in full force and bounce along in exhilaration, never once looking back. Wet Leather quips: “It’s hard to say whether this is a love song or just an evasive apology.“ Wet Leather’s new album Present Lives will be arriving tomorrow, February 2nd.

Swedish quintet Francis is here to tug softly on our hearts with more of their charming guitar pop as they present us with Swing. It’s a dreamy pop gem whose folksy whimsicality and light step recall SOAK, but with a vintage rock and roll swing, some extra peppy bounces, and a pinch of earthiness. Swing is Francis’ first new material since their sophomore full length Marathon, which was also their very first international album despite their long history. Swing is out now via Strangers Candy.

Can you believe it? Christmas is less than four days away! It sure came upon us fast. I hope you have all your shopping done, your cookies and milk prepared for Santa, and a warm fireplace to huddle next to as we hop into a special set of holiday tunes right here on IHM. Let’s begin with this dusty weathered, dark brooding charmer, Oh Santa (Bad World), which comes from our favorite Los Angeles based French-American indie folk pop duo, Freedom Fry! Though the song isn’t new, Bruce and Marie have fashioned a cozy snug acoustic performance for us in the form of a new video. It nearly feels like Freedom Fry is serenading us with their leathery jangling treat from our own living room. The duo remarks: “This year Santa’s staying home, it’s been a bad world. Here’s a live version of our pessimistic xmas song. Share if you think 2016 has been a bad one.” Well, Freedom Fry, I can’t agree more. Thank goodness we have wonderful music to keep us company through these glum days. Freedom Fry isn’t the first band to have made such a statement. Even fellow indie band Cathedrals mentioned the heavy manner in which the year closed out when they shared with me their Christmas gift to fans the other day. We all seem to be in agreement about 2016, or at least, the final months of 2016. Stay tuned for a share of Cathedrals new Christmas video in a few short posts! In the meantime, you can stream Freedom Fry’s Oh Santa (Bad World) on Soundcloud in all its original vintage crackling, folksy captivating glory. It and the duo’s cover of Silent Night are available from iTunes.

It’s always such a treat to encounter Bay Area talent that I’d hitherto missed out on. Tino Drima is one such band. Though they released a debut EP earlier this year, dusty crackling, spacey curling You Are My Friend is the first time I’ve heard of this band who mixes influences from Roy Orbison, Elvis, and Can to create a thoroughly captivating vintage sound. You Are My Friend comes from a split EP with Spooky Mansion out today on Dingo Vinyl. For those of you in the area, you can catch the record release party at Bottom Of The Hill tonight.

Not only does Karma Wears White Ties sport a massively intriguing band name, but these fellows from windy Chi-Town are also colossally infectious on their song Flowers, a track off of a scintillating sophomore EP named Wesley. Flowers, being my very first encounter with KWWT, swept me right off my feet with its upbeat and buoyant indie pop. Its vibrant guitar and gusty charming vocals carry are painted with a retro surf hue reminiscent of early The Drums and Day Wave, but they’re met with the vivacious energy of Two Door Cinema Club. Upon diving into Karma Wears White Ties’ Wesley EP, I found myself hooked to the five song release, one which you can stream in full on Soundcloud and purchase from iTunes. I may have encountered Karma Wears White Ties later than some, but I sure am glad I did.

Reminding me of a deliciously vintage and retro indie rock blend of Cults with early Best Coast is a British quartet named Love L.U.V. Come See Me is the title track from their recent debut EP, out as a digital download. A lo-fi, carefree garage vibe blends with sugary pop melody on the endearing, yet punk rocking tune. For another warm, fuzzy tune off the EP, stream One And Only Friend below, too.

Santa Barbara duo Mexico City Blondes follow up their terrific debut track Fade with second single Colors. It’s a sultry treat with some crunchy guitars and an abundance of retro flavored soulfulness. Colors is available now on iTunes. Debut single Fade is still my favorite, however, and from the looks of it, it was many peoples’ favorite. Revisit the bittersweet, dynamic gem below. If you missed my prior feature, I beseech you not to pass up on it this time.

Marked as a demo, like previous song and terrific debut Sleep Forever, is Teenager, the latest from the UK’s Black Honey. Like Sleep Forever, it’s hard to believe this isn’t a final version, considering how fantastic the alt pop tune already is. As before, there’s a Lana Del Rey melancholic, vintage pop rock sound going on, but with a touch of surf rock and a dash of Wild Nothing’s shoegazey dream pop. Revisit the more jangly, spaghetti western channeling Sleep Forever again below. It’s gorgeous.
