Van

Pierszalowski has been a busy, busy man in the music scene for a very long time. Though he currently resides in Los Angeles, he originally hails from right here in the Bay, where he’s known for founding the now retired folk rock band Port O’Brien. He went on to lead an exciting new project named WATERS, whom we’re endlessly fond of, and he’s since debuted a solo project named Van William, too, even collaborating with beloved Swedes First Aid Kit in the process. Van returns with a heartfelt & bucolic charmer today named Cosmic Sign, a sweetly tempered, nostalgia laden, and road weary folk rock ballad from his new album Countries, due out January 19. Pre-order and stream, here.

Both Van William’s Van Pierszalowski and First Aid Kit are busy bodies when it comes to the indie music scene. Van is known for his roles in now defunct San Francisco band Port O’Brien as well as Los Angeles based indie darlings WATERS. Swedish duo First Aid Kit, aside from winning our hearts with their endearing folk pop, have delighted us with their sweet harmonies alongside artists and bands like Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes. The two come together on Van William’s Revolution, a tender stomping earworm of a folk jangler. Despite its honeyed glow, Revolution’s soft frayed edges are dipped in melancholy. After all, the song explores the end of a relationship, but in a jaunty lush, brassy wistful fashion. Revolution is Van William’s second single, and it’ll be out September 9th on both iTunes and Spotify.

When I first listened to Fourth Of July, I found myself instantaneously musing over the fact that Van William’s music reminded me of the band WATERS. It wasn’t until I had finished enjoying the jangling bright but utterly nostalgic song in full that I delved into details about this new Los Angeles based band. Suddenly, everything made sense. You see, Van William is a brand new project created by Van Pierszalowski. The once San Francisco resident is the frontman of WATERS as well as founding member of now defunct folk rock band Port O’Brien. Now based out of Los Angeles, Van has somehow found time to forge brand new music under his new project while WATERS is working on their sophomore album. He channels his love for indie rock icons like The Violent Femmes, Built To Spill, and early Modest Mouse on punchy raw, hooking vibrant Fourth Of July, which he wrote right here in San Francisco at beautiful Stinson Beach. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we’ve found the perfect song for our July 4th BBQs and hangs.
