I know this one’s been out for a moment, but we’re such massive fans of Toronto artist Jessie Reyez that we really couldn’t let an exceptional new song from her slip us by. It’s been a wild ride, falling for the R&B soul artist after encountering Figures and Shutter Island early last year and gunning for her as the next big thing. We even made it a point to catch her ONE set at SXSW last year, and we came back singing her praises and spreading the word about her as much as we could. Sure enough, Jessie Reyez has become quite the sensation since, and now she’s returned with Body Count, blessing us with her raw, emotive voice, so uniquely remarkable, and her edgy and bold sound, which often pushes the envelope when it comes to empowering women and other artists. Body Count is an anthem for self-love and expression, and its recent video, directed by Peter Huang, was inspired by the Salem witch trials, a historic moment when women were persecuted to the extreme. Reyez explains: “Sometimes for allegations of magic but often for low key sexual promiscuity or sexual selectiveness.  In short, you’re going to get judged anyway, so as long as you’re not hurting anyone and loving yourself, might as well do whatever you want. Whether that’s being celibate or being sexually free is your choice. Your body count is nobody’s business but your own.“ Stream/purchase Body Count, here.

Just as we foretold, Toronto’s Jessie Reyez has become a shining star in the R&B pop scene. And now she’s lent her phenomenal voice to a new track from Atlanta hip hop artist Russ. It’s a slow burning, poignant aching elegy about love before fame, which Russ produced himself. Two beacons of light in the urban music soundscape unite flawlessly on deeply reflective Basement, which can be found on Apple Music, here.

Atmospheric, dramatic synths surge through our ears and serenade our dark hearts on BK Woe, a fierce yet sensuous hip hop and R&B soul track dripping with desire from Harlem based Melii. Droopy, syrupy electronic production accompanies the 19 year old’s stunning voice. BK Woe is a barbed yet seductive ballad, raw yet refined, ghostly opaque yet burning with a fiery heat. Stream/purchase the song, here, and listen to more of Melii’s music on Soundcloud, here.

Cautious Clay, the artist from Cleveland whom I’m pretty sure named himself after the great Cassius Clay (or Muhummad Ali, for those not versed in boxing), is an undeniably champion in his ring, having impressed countless critics and tastemakers with his innovative form of alt soul and R&B. 2017 was a big year for him. Aside from immense tracks like Cold War and Joshua Tree, Cautious Clay also collaborated with the likes of Petit Biscuit and Bipolar Sunshine. He shows no sign of slowing down now that we’ve segued into 2018 either, having been selected by Soundcloud as an artist to watch as he prepares to release a new EP next month named Blood Type. He gives us a taste of his Shakespearean eloquence on Juliet & Caeser, a lyrically refined, brassy longing effusion of hip hop, soul, and R&B. Juliet & Ceaser is cozy and intimate, but it also has that urban alt spark and gritty brilliance, like meditative paced King Krule, with some Theophilus London, NoMBe, and Bipolar Sunshine trickling through its rolling waves. Juliet & Ceaser, which Cautious Clay wrote and produced himself, can also be streamed via Spotify, here.

It’s usually “me, me and the City” most nights I head out to San Francisco for live music, though those evenings often end up with me bumping into music buddies or running into many familiar faces. That’s what’s great about the always tight knit music community, whether you’re an artist or just a fan. Well, I highly recommend  that those music pals don’t skip out on Josh Tobias, the blooming Brooklyn funk, soul, and R&B talent who’s now returned with a song named “You, Me and the City”. If you’re one of the many people heavily enamored by Tom Misch’s jazzy chill, cozy mellow form of soul, as well as Bruno Major’s snug and comforting, romantic and stripped back music, then you’re going to fall head over heels for this new Josh Tobias track which the gifted musician wrote, co-produced, and performed all by himself. I suddenly want to head up to the City myself on this frigid winter night, with Josh Tobias wafting through my ear. I can cruise those city streets all night long to “You, Me and the City”, while an aching longing for sweet tender romance tugs gently at my heart. This last official single of 2017 from Josh Tobias is a free download, here.

Throwing shade in music sometimes works, sometimes fails miserably. It’s obvious that IAMDDB has it down pat on her fierce new trappy R&B jam Shade. The Manchester raised musician has been creating quite a buzz in the UK with her jazzy, hip hop driven concoctions for awhile now, and we’re glad we’ve stumbled upon her music through a chance encounter with this gutsy jam. Its woozy propensity and murky bewitchment remind me of Syd (of The Internet), while her soulful voice and snazzy groove evoke Jorja Smith. There’s also a snarling ferocity and visceral rawness reminiscent of recent buzz sensation Jesse Reyez. Shade is lifted from IAMDDB’s new Hood Rich EP, out now via Union IV. Grab the tune from major outlets, here.

You know those nights, when you arrive at a show or a party, and you tell yourself, “One drink, I’m only going to have one drink and I’m calling it a night.” But then you can’t help but to have more, because heck, these drinks are tasty, and the intoxication is sublime? Well, there’s no listening to SWIMS’ 1 Drink just once, either, it’s far too infectious a sleek swaggering jam. Fortunately for us, it’s not unhealthy to be addicted to SWIMS. 1 Drink might be great nourishment for the soul, too, especially since it’s a black mirror that highlights our own vices and transgressions. Moving Castle co-founder and production whiz AObeats has linked back up with waxy voiced crooner and swooner, Sakima, to give us an imaginative new single drenched in slick sensuous, heady lush vibes. A unique amalgamation of hip hop, electronica, and R&B pop greets our eager ears on SWIMS’ genre defying expedition. Re-visit the pair’s prior jams on Soundcloud, here.

The other day, I ambled upon a mysterious project named Roy Blair, and I know nothing about him, or them. I’m guessing it’s a him, but I can’t be sure. His latest single, Shell, is making quite an impression, having acquired 19K streams on Soundcloud along and I’m sure several times that on Spotify and elsewhere. Its a lo-fi fusion of indie rock and acoustic R&B soul. It feels sincere and gritty, heartfelt and enduring. And this isn’t Roy Blair’s first fine rodeo, either. His Soundcloud features a full year of fine sonic accomplishments, each of them having racked up a lot of listens, too. You can check them out on Soundcloud, here. You can be sure I’ll be looking out for more info regarding this artist in the days ahead.

German producer Koni has enthralled us with a wide array of remixes in the past, but he’s here to remind us how enamoring he can be as an originals artist too with the follow up to earlier this year’s Mad About You. LA Luv, which features Washington, D.C. R&B crooner Rakan, is a dream of a balmy house meets R&B soul track. I can nearly feel the warmth of LA sunshine on my skin and taste its smoggy flushed atmosphere on my tongue while I dance my way around the room to this heart melting, deeply longing jam. Stream/download the chill dance single from alternate sources, here.

Widely followed Australian band Chase Atlantic, who first shot to fame via their You Tube music videos, have unleashed a new three track EP entitled Part Two. The dark enthralling listen opens with this restless burning song, Triggered, a fearless driving alt and electro thrummer. The song is raw and gritty like Sir Sly or The Neighbourhood yet sleek whirring like Atlas Genius and The Chain Gang Of 1974.  You can stream Chase Atlantic’s excellent new EP in full via Soundcloud below. Purchase from iTunes, here.
