Alec Benjamin, the gifted singer songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona who’s collaborated with the likes of Jon Bellion, Matisyahu, Jamie Scott, and many others in the past, is back with a tenderly stirring demo named The Knife in my Back. This stripped back and intimate ballad is as bittersweet as they come. It’s a gently affecting caress and a poignant lullaby. The acoustic pop demo carries a hint of urban pop in its mellow cadence and aching strums. The Knife in my Back is a heartrending yet cozy endearing companion on these frozen winter days. If you’re craving for more of Alec Benjamin’s melting voice, you can stream more of his recent demos and singles on YouTube, here.

Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do might have taken top honors with its record breaking albeit controversial music video this summer, but Charli XCX’s star studded video for sugary bopping Boys easily receives top marks as the most brilliant of the year. The British pop artist bends expectations and plays with convention on the clip, plus Boys itself is such an infectious and playful treat. Turns out, this acoustic rendition of Boys is quite an enamoring listen, too, despite being stripped of its whimsical plinks and chirpy electro pop bounces. The end result feels earnest and warm, if not more melancholic and regretful. Snag this acoustic version of Boys, here.

Brighton based ambient electronic five piece Phoria returns with a beautiful acoustic rendition of their song Melatonin, one of so many stand out tracks from their criminally underrated debut album Volition. The already introspective song takes on a new level of deep contemplation on Phoria’s spectral hovering recording. This “unplugged” version is a soft, gentle kiss, from which emits exquisite and moving sorrow. Despite my love of Volition, I’ve yet to see Phoria live, a sure to be transcendental experience I’ve had at the top of my to do list for a long time. Luckily, the British band will soon be making their way out to Austin for SXSW. I look forward to finally catching them at Fancy PR, The Burning Ear, and Vinyl Moon’s Double Dutch showcase on March 18th. Find out more about that stacked event, here. You can also stream Melatonin (Unplugged) via Soundcloud below. Debut album Volition is out on iTunes, here.

Deptford Goth’s Life After Defo was one of my favorite albums of 2012, and I consider it criminally overlooked and underrated. So when Daniel Woolhouse proceeded to release new music under his given name, I was absolutely thrilled. As part of his Christmas “Countdown to the End of 2016″, Daniel has unveiled a beautiful and gently haunting piano version of his recent single Soup For Brains. He turns my brain into mush with the wistfully stripped down rendition, one which reminds me of some of the diaphanous songs he gave us previously as Deptford Goth. This “Piano Sessions” version of Soup For Brains it sheer and intimate, the perfect companion during this frozen winter week. Visit the original, here, and purchase Daniel Woolhouses’ new album What’s The Sound from iTunes.

The Cure’s Boys Don’t Cry is a timeless classic, a vibrant nostalgic hit that I can tirelessly revisit any time of the day for an eternity to come. But it’s a very different sort of experience that we receive from angelic voiced UK singer songwriter Jerry Williams as she delivers a new music video for her cover of Boys Don’t Cry. This Boys Don’t Cry is gently lilting and folksy heartrending. Jerry Williams’ tenderly stripped down rendition really exposes the song’s vulnerable aspect. You can find the track on Jerry Williams’ sophomore EP, Let’s Just Forget It, out now via Sunglasses Records. Stream in full on Soundcloud and purchase from iTunes.

There sure is some impressively stirring R&B smoldering away right here in California these days. Though originally from NY, newcomer COASTL WOLF now resides in Los Angeles. Out of its smoggy mirage of glamour and prestige comes debut single 2am (in the valley), a gritty and raw, gut wrenching and heart sick brew made up of R&B, soul, pop, and rock. Its opulent progressive production and emotionally explosive vocals evoke fellow emerging talents Stephen and Brandyn Burnette with a touch of The Weeknd darkness and some Jack Garratt resplendence. 2am is the first single off of COASTL WOLF’s debut EP KOKO, available June 3rd. Watch an acoustic session unplugged performance of 2am below.

In 2015, IHM had the great pleasure of premiering several fantastic tracks from a Los Angeles based band named Little Wolves, including a riveting blend of synthpop, indie rock, and alt pop named Alone. On the track, Little Wolves delivers a captivating contrast of bittersweet emotion and breezy, upbeat mirth. The song was but one of several Little Wolves songs, all produced by RAC’s Andre Anjos, that mesmerized me immensely. With the new year, Little Wolves has many great surprises planned for us. While we wait excitedly for their next great song and more collaborative affairs, we get to wax nostalgic to the beauty of a live acoustic version of Alone. Sway to its tender guitar strums and float away to its heavenly vocals as we look forward to a very exciting 2016 for Little Wolves. Don’t forget to hold up a lighter and turn down the lights.

Rebecca Clements’ cover of The Cure’s Boy’s Don’t Cry is simply stunning and breathtaking. The singer songwriter from the UK takes the classic and transforms it into a stripped downand heartfelt ballad. The Cure is a big influence on Rebecca Clements’ music and she figured it might be cool to cover the song. Well, this moving cover is way more than cool, Rebecca. It’s beautiful.

I guess you can consider this a throwback moment, and a very rare one at that on IHM, but here’s an unreleased, unplugged version of R.E.M.’s classic The One I Love that debuted on Rolling Stone earlier today. The recording is from their 2001 MTV Unplugged appearance, and it’s a huge reminder of how incredible this song is, and how influential and amazing R.E.M. was. I was absolutely transfixed by this earlier this morning, and knew right away, I had to share this magic. On Record Store Day, Michael Stipe and the band released limited copies of their 1991 and 2001 MTV Unplugged sessions on vinyl. The vinyl sold so well that they’ve decided to release a version on CD come May 19, which includes this amazing rendition of The One I Love as well as many more treats. Their legacy lives on. Forever.
