It’s very rare form for us to share a studio performance video as a feature here on IHM, but I’m far too enamored with gifted Norwegian musician Aurora and her bewitching cover of legendary trip hop band Massive Attack’s classic tune, Teardrop. Her glacial enchanting aesthetic and her lissome ethereal voice are perfect fits for the well loved song. Though there are plenty of other Teardrop covers I love (ie. José González’s, here), this one quickly rises to the top. Aurora performed the cover for triple j’s Like A Version sessions. Oh, how I’d love to hear this in person.

The Wombats’ Give Me A Try is one infectious, upbeat song. In fact, it’s probably my second favorite song from the British band’s superb album Glitterbug, with Greek Tragedy taking top spot. It’s been some time since I last visited the album, but I’m seriously enjoying getting caught up in the dark, edgy vibes on this remix of Give Me A Try by Jimmy Edgar. He brings an icy kick to the song, making it into an ominously acidic techno and house flip. We’ve never heard The Wombats this way, and I dig it. The Wombats also turned in a fantastic cover of Jarryd James’ Do You Remember on Australia’s Triple J radio recently. Watch the cover below.

Milky Chance covers Shake It Off

January 9, 2015

Milky Chance visited Australia’s Triple J, and of course, as is tradition, their stint in the studio included a cover. The German folk act brought their mellow reggae and electronic tinged acoustic style to Taylor Swift’s massive hit Shake It Off. It’s a charming stomper of a twangy, stripped down treat.

Apparently, I missed out on Australian band I Know Leopard’s debut EP, Illumina, earlier this year, but they’re here to charm and warm my heart with new single Perfect Picture, a swirling indie pop and rock treat produced by Haxx. Hazy synths and laid back dreaminess imbue the stringy treat. I Know Leopard is garnering some well deserved attention back home, where Perfect Picture has been added straight to full rotation on well regarded Australian radio station Triple J.  For a taste off their debut EP Illumina, stream Daisy Eyes, below.

My week is already starting off splendidly, thanks to San Francisco/Los Angeles based mysterious and anonymous producer ZHU! I’ve been wondering when we’d hear some new ZHU, and today, he’s unveiled a cover of CHVRCHES’ Gun, which premiered on Australia’s Triple J radio. In case you need a refresher, though I don’t see why you would, ZHU first blew me away when he appeared out of nowhere earlier this year with an incredible, incognito Outkast medley titled Moves Like Ms. Jackson. I immediately heaped endless praise on it, both on IHM and my own personal Facebook account. He then went on to drop some super sick originals and remixes, including electrifying hit Faded, which was then was remixed by everyone and their mothers, because we ALL know how amazing that song is, how catchy and memorable, how much of an ace jam. It’s still one of my fave new tracks this year, and now, I get to enjoy ZHU’s slick, smooth cover of Gun, one of my favorite CHVRCHES songs. ZHU is also about to make his live debut at Australia’s Listen Out! Festival. To all those attending, I am dark green with envy! He’s only one of the best new producers this year, if not THE best. If you actually live under a rock and never heard Faded (or just want to visit it again, like me, for the gazillionth time), stream it below.

Little Dragon cover Kelis and Andre 3000’s Millionaire

August 22, 2014

Let’s start the afternoon off with a cover, shall we? Little Dragon, who’s due to play a sold out show at the cavernous Fox Theatre in Oakland tonight, turned in a fantabulous cover of Kelis’ Millionaire, which originally features Andre 3000. The Swedish electropop band’s neo-soul electropop style fits the tune well, and I found myself captivated to the utmost by the always incredible Yukimi Nagano and her smooth voice. This is also the first time I’ve heard Yukimi rap, which is pretty dang cool. This makes me regret not making it out to Little Dragon’s show tonight, but I’m planning to hit them up the next time they return this Fall. After all, I got to see them at Mezzanine a couple years ago, albeit while incredibly hungover because it was the day after my birthday.

First Aid Kit cover Jack White’s Love Interruption

August 2, 2014

I try not to make it a habit to feature video clips of covers on IHM, but once in awhile, I encounter something that’s too spectacular not to be shared. Quite often, the clips are from Australia’s Triple J radio, since they have a tradition of having bands do covers live on air when they visit their studios. Today, we get to watch Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit do a transcendental cover of Jack White’s Love Interruption. It’s perfect.
