I can bet on it that you’ve never heard the Stones in quite this fashion. Vermont duo argonaut&wasp have created a jaunty sweet cover of The Rolling Stones’ classic Beast Of Burden, but this is an airy light, synth sliding dance pop delight! In fact, its candy warped moments remind me of some of Prince’s whimsically grooving delights, but fused with some light hearted Cherub. The cover came about since argonaut&wasp played the book release party for Rich Cohen’s The Sun & The Moon & The Rolling Stones, and I couldn’t be happier that they put their heads together to rework, reinterpret, and create addictive covers of iconic stone’s songs.

Wilco covered Get Lucky (AND A LOT MORE)

June 24, 2013

Chicago rock veterans Wilco played a set at Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts, and they decided to do some thing kind of crazy cool. They played a covers set filled with 27 classic and new tunes. There’s a full set up on NYCTaper but their service seems to be temporarily down, so in the meantime, let’s just tune into this fan video of PART of the set. Which part? Wilco’s cool spot on cover of the ubiquitous Get Lucky. This looks like it was LOADS of fun.

Here’s a list of all the covers they went through during this gig. Amazing. I want to hear it all:

The Boys Are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy cover)
Cut Your Hair (Pavement cover)
In the Street (Big Star cover)
New Madrid (Uncle Tupelo cover)
Dead Flowers (The Rolling Stones cover)
Simple Twist of Fate (Bob Dylan cover)
Ripple (Grateful Dead cover)
Who Loves the Sun (The Velvet Underground cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover)
And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles cover) (And Your Bird Can Sing was … more)
Psychotic Reaction (Count Five cover)
Tom Courtenay (Yo La Tengo cover) (with Yo La Tengo)
James Alley Blues
Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks cover) (with Lucius)
Waterloo (ABBA cover) (with Lucius)
(What’s So Funny ’bout) Peace, Love and Understanding (Brinsley Schwarz cover)
Marquee Moon (Television cover)
Happy Birthday To You (Mildred J. Hill cover) (to Pat Sansone)
(Don’t Fear) The Reaper (Blue Öyster Cult cover)
Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young cover)
Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)
Surrender (Cheap Trick cover)
Color Me Impressed (The Replacements cover) (with Tommy Stinson)
Kingpin
Thank You Friends (Big Star cover)
The Weight (The Band cover) (with Lucius)
Roadrunner (The Modern Lovers cover) (with Yo La Tengo)

While we’re waiting for the full set to become available, here’s the rocking Marquee Moon (Television) cover, an 11+ minute jam.

Win of AF + Rolling Stones!

June 10, 2013

The Rolling Stones have been touring and inviting some great guests on stage at their different stops, but this one has got to be one of the coolest yet. While in Montreal, who else should be invited on stage but Montreal resident Win Butler of Arcade Fire? The crummy video clip by a fan leaves lots to be desired, but I was still mesmerized by their performance of The Last Time from beginning to end. I also never noticed how gigantor Win actually is??? How come he looks so huge next to the Stones? Or is it that I never realized how tiny Jagger and the rest of em are?

The Stones… and Florence

November 30, 2012

The Rolling Stones. With Florence Welch. On stage. Together. Performing the Stones’ classic Gimme Shelter. I guess she’s got the moves like Jagger! Epic. Check it.

OFFICIAL VID: The Rolling Stones – Doom and Gloom

November 22, 2012

It’s crazy that in 2012, we have a brand new single and video from the legendary Stones. But here we are. And here’s Doom and Gloom, a cut of good ol’ traditional rock and roll. The awesome video stars Noomi Rapace, whom to me, will always be the amazing actress who did Lisbeth Salander justice in the Swedish, original Girl With A Dragon Tattoo film adaptation. It’s only fitting that she gets immortalized in a Stones video. Doom and Gloom is one of the new songs off The Rolling Stones’ coming hits album GRRR!

Rolling Stones!

October 11, 2012

I know I’m a little belated on this one, but when I saw the announcement very late last night, I was lazy, sorry. For those who haven’t checked it out yet, The Rolling Stones returned with a brand new single in the wee hours of the night. Here’s the lyric video for stomping rock and roll tune Doom and Gloom. Someone please say that in a very dramatic, deep voice.. DOOM and GLOOM!!! It’s the first new material from the Stones in seven long years. I wouldn’t say it’s life changing, but hey, they’ve still got it, right? It’s the Rolling Stones!!! Doom and Gloom will be on their upcoming greatest hits collection GRRR! The new album has a release date of November 13 in North America (12 for the rest of the world).
