New The Drums should come as no big surprise, considering their fresh tour on the horizon that kicks off at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz and the Fox in Oakland come April. Yet, Meet Me In Mexico was still unexpected, since it hasn’t been that long since the surf rock and indie pop band released their new album Abysmal Thoughts last summer. There’s no complaints to be found here as this The Drums fan bops her head in joy to the peppy beats of this fine new tune. The Drums offered up the track as a charity piece. All proceeds go to aid Mexican earthquake relief efforts via Reconstruir México and Lago Tanganica 67. You can purchase Meet Me In Mexico from Bandcamp, here.

The Drums’ Jonny Pierce has defied expectations with his collaborations in the past, even teaming up with LA producer TOKiMONSTA on a phenomenal track last year. But we were still pleasantly surprised by the latest song revealed off of the Brooklyn band’s impending album Abysmal Thoughts. Mirror features Los Angeles electro rock duo Io Echo, whom we haven’t heard from in ages. Io Echo’s Ioanna Gika lends her ethereal vocals to the shimmering twirler. Mirror is signature The Drums surf rock and guitar pop, with a driving bass line and an abundance of dreamy Jonny Pierce’s sighing cooing. It leaves me ever thrilled that it’s almost Friday, and Abysmal Thoughts will soon be arriving on my doorstep. You can pre-order the album from iTunes, here.

I’m still flying high from catching one of my favorite surf pop bands at SXSW back in March. I’m also incredibly excited that they’ll be dropping their next album soon. Who else could I be talking about but The Drums? I’m still glued to recent singles Blood Under My Belt and Heart Basel, but here they come again with a fresh new taste off of Abysmal Thoughts to steal my heart away once more. Head of the Horse is a far dreamier cut. It’s a wistful longing, airy wafting gem that leans further into synthpop territory than their prior tracks. The single’s watery ripples are steeped in melancholy, even as they glisten brilliantly, as if under the rays of a golden sun. Abysmal Thoughts drops on June 16th. Pre-order, here.

I count myself incredibly fortunate for having caught The Drums at SXSW in March not once, but twice (sort of, I was setting up for an official showcase next door the second time and was privy to some “backstage” viewing and listening). The Brooklyn band’s new album Abysmal Thoughts drops in a few short weeks, and I got to see Jonny Pierce perform one of my favorite songs of the moment, Blood Under The Belt, two whole times! My excitement for Abysmal Thoughts grows even more as The Drums unveils new single Heart Basel, whose name seems a clever play on the famed international art fair. Heart Basel is a romantically jaunty surf pop treat (as The Drums’ tunes oft tend to be). If only I could dance to the song the way Jonny dances, then all would be perfect in the world. Pre-order Abysmal Thoughts from The Drums’ site, here.

I was so elated that new The Drums had arrived this morning that I was literally doing a happy dance around my office. It’s been close to three years since the Brooklyn band gave us their last studio album Encyclopedia. On June 16th, they’ll release their fourth full length, Abysmal Thoughts. Lead single Blood Under My Belt is quintessential The Drums, a springy surf rock and shimmying indie pop charmer that takes us back to their earlier days, before they went super psychedelic and experimentally heady on us with Encyclopedia. The only time we heard from Jonny Pierce in between these albums was his guest stint on TOKiMONSTA’s Giving Up. It’s only proper we now happy dance some more to Blood Under My Belt. Pre-order Abysmal Thoughts from The Drums’ site, here, before its release on Anti Records.

Who’d have ever thought that Los Angeles’ TOKiMONSTA and The Drums’ Jonny Pierce would be collaborating on a song together? Not I, that’s for sure. But here we are, about to dive into a song named Giving Up, by a producer who’s versatility is absolutely mind blowing. And who does it feature? Jonny Pierce! Giving Up fuses together two acts that IHM has loved for countless years, since it’s very first inception. I went into it without knowing what to expect, but found myself whisked away on a innovative journey that unites Jonny Pierce’s nostalgia infused gliding vocals with a gorgeously effervescent future beats soundscape. It’s a slice of music heaven indeed. TOKiMONSTA’s new album Fovere is shaping up to be a brilliant release, and it drops on March 4th.
