I was over the moon last Friday when I saw that SWMRS’ new music video was trending on YouTube. We’ve  been incredibly fond of this rising East Bay quartet and their punky rock. The band, who counts Billy Joe Armstrong’s son, Joey Armstrong, among its ranks, will be heading out on a North American co-headlining tour with The Interrupters this fall. Their new video for Lose It, one of many fine tunes from the re-released edition of their critically acclaimed debut album Drive North, was shot right in Oakland. Singer/guitarist Cole Becker directed the endearing clip for the sweetly euphonious song, which bursts at the seams with twangy hooking, head wagging sun-kissed pop. SWMRS re-released their debut album Drive North on Fueled By Ramen last fall. The newer version includes re-mastered versions of the original release’s 12 tracks and new songs Lost It and Palm Trees. Grab it digitally, here, and physically, here. Find out more about SWMRS’ forthcoming tour, here.

I’m always over the moon when I find out about local bands that I’d hitherto not been aware of. Enter MT. EDDY, an Oakland based rock band previously known as Jacob Danger, lead by guitarist and singer songwriter Jakob Danger Armstrong who’s the youngest child of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. The Oakland quartet released the second track of their forthcoming album Chroma today. Working Title’s punky chugging rock channels bits of chalky, early The Strokes and some sooty Arctic Monkeys with a hint of surfy bands like DIIV, Fidlar, or Beach Fossils. MT. EDDY will be embarking on a West Coast tour tonight in support of SWMRS, which also involves an Armstrong lad, too. That family is becoming a Bay Area music dynasty of sorts at this rate! Pre-order MT. EDDY’s debut album Chroma from iTunes, here, before it’s out on Uncool Records come June 2nd.

There sure is a lot going on in the East Bay these days. Not only did hometown heroes Green Day just drop another critically acclaimed full length named Revolution Radio, but fast rising young quartet SWMRS, who counts Billy Joe Armstrong’s son, Joey, among its members, has been making huge waves with their own debut, Drive North. The quartet permeates our Friday with some riotous riffs and scuzzy spunk as they release a music video for their latest single, Palm Trees. This blistering treat is wildly infectious and raucous jolting. “To the top, to the top” yelp SWMRS on the vibrant rocking jam. That’s a pretty good premonition of this Fueled By Ramen signed band’s future, if you ask me. You can purchase SWMR”S album Drive North from iTunes.

Oakland’s own scuzz rock and surf pop quartet SWMRS are readying their debut album for this week’s New Music Friday. The band has easily won over the affection of many with their brand of light and punchy pop punk music. Their single, Figuring It Out, is one of the most infectious indie rock tunes of the moment, and they’ve even teamed up with fellow Oaklander Kreayshawn for its new music video. Youthful energy and buoyant angst saturate both video and song. Figuring It Out is a rollicking anthem that reminds me of ex-Bay Area band WATERS with a injection of Green Day fortitude, which comes as no surprise considering band member Joey Armstrong is Billy Joe Armstrong’s son. Pre-order SWMRS’ debut album Drive North on iTunes.

Ever since I encountered Miley several months ago, SWMRS has become my latest Oakland darlings, one of so many amazing bands that are emerging from the Bay scene. The quartet announced a debut album today. Drive North is due for release on February 12th, 2016 via Uncool Records, and album track Figuring It Out was just premiered as well. Like Miley, Figuring It Out is a scuzzy rock and roller, but it’s even more popping and infectious, venturing far into pop punk and surf pop territory in a very WATERS, Wavves, and Green Day sort of boisterously angsty way. Coincidentally, Joey Armstrong, Billie Joe Armstrong’s son, is a member of the band. Drive North was produce by FIDLAR’s Zac Carper, too. SWMRS will be announcing a US tour soon.

The talent pool sure stretches deep in Oakland these days. I’m such a huge fan of all the amazing emerging acts out of the town, including Day Wave, Astronauts, etc., Trails And Ways, Hazel English, and so many more, just to name a few. Now, I get to add some punk rocking music to the list, thanks to SWMRS, which is a fitting addition considering the strong punk rock history of that Oakland-Berkeley area. The East Bay quartet dropped a two track EP today, and the opening track is an ode to ever controversial and spunky Miley Cyrus. Miley is a scuzzy rock and roller that brings together fuzzy punk and sun-kissed surf pop, as well as a touch of psychedelic space rock. It’s insanely catchy, and you can purchase it and rambunctious, explosive Uncool on iTunes, now. Uncool is such a splendid rock tune that I’ll tack it on below, too.
