The moment I heard Maja Francis’ siren like voice when she revealed debut electronic pop gem Last Days Of Dancing earlier this year, I was hooked. I’m a huge fan of Kate Bush, I also happen to love Swedish electronic pop very much. It only follows that Maja Francis’ enchanting sound is the perfect confection for me. Today, Maja Francis offers up a spellbinding cover of Billy Joel classic Just The Way You Are, transforming it into a powerful, mystical pop ballad miles away from the original. And it’s magnificent! Let’s re-visit Last Days Of Dancing below, too, while we’re at it. I love it dearly.

You can add Maja Francis (Ma-ya Fran-sis) to my list of Swedish acts I dig, because her debut song, Last Days Of Dancing, is a soaring electronic pop song that reminds me of some acts I love very dearly. Her voice immediately evokes Kate Bush, with a touch of Malin from Niki and the Doves. The driving, uptempo melody of Last Days Of Dancing also brings to mind some of Robyn’s infectious hits. Plus, there’s a spirited radiance within the song that comes at us warmly like a blend of NONONO and The Royal Concept. Ah, yes, Maja reminds me why I really, really love music from that side of the world. Last Days Of Dancing is a splendid first pop anthem from an intriguing newcomer. Maja released a video today for the song, which will see a release in the U.S. this summer. She’ll also be playing Way Out West 2015 and is currently supporting Tove Lo and Seinabo Sey on select dates in Scandinavia.

Swedish electropop act Vanbot is gearing up to release a new album, Perfect Storm. The second track revealed is an effervescent and evocative song named Seven. I tend to love enchanting Scandinavian pop music, so this one was right up my alley. Plus, when the song’s punchy tempo really kicks in, warped synths and all, I’m much reminded of another Swedish act I love, Robyn, but darker. Vanbot’s new album will be released May 15th via Lisch Recordings / Sony Music Sweden.

This morning, I was so excited about this debut that I listened to it with a huge smile on my face at least three times on repeat while dancing around my living room and talking to myself. Yes, my cat gave me some very odd stares. Take a listen to new Swedish electropop act Wildhart’s Stuck In A Second and you might understand why I lost it for a bit. The potent newcomers’ first single is a stunning, intense, and magnificent listen. Wildhart is described as having their feet in jazz and improvisation music, and that’s certainly detectable on the heady, complex production and its enchanting, flittery atmosphere. There’s a future pop synthiness that evokes Purity Ring blended with Little Dragon, altogether paired with the icy, ethereal Scandinavian qualities of acts like The Knife, Oh Land, and Niki And The Dove. There’s also a crystalline brittleness to the softly pulsing gem, painting a picture of wistful vulnerability. Stuck In A Second is a magical tune, and I’m stuck in all five minutes, fourteen seconds of it.

Hello, Kate Boy, and welcome back! Times flies, and it’s been a year since we’ve heard from the electropop act, formed by members based in both Australia and Sweden. I caught them twice when they were on tour in the US, and both times were crazy good and captivating shows. I was even surprised that my friend, who doesn’t go to shows often at all, made it a point to go out again to catch them a second time around at Popscene in San Francisco. I’ve always gravitated towards Kate Boy’s Scandinavian electropop sound, which I’m always much drawn to. Their brand new singel Self Control might actually be their best release yet. It’s instantaneously catchy with its hooking melody and upbeat production, reminding me again of other Swedish electropop acts I love, like Niki & The Dove and earlier The Knife. This looks to be a relaunch of the act, since all prior tunes have been scrubbed from their SoundCloud account. And it looks like they’re now signed to Fiction, rather than IAMSOUND. Bring it on, I’m waiting for more new music! And I’m excited!

I totally missed this a few months prior, but now that I’ve come upon it, it’s a must share. Zhala is a Swedish pop musician, and she teamed up with Robyn on the Grammis version of this very futuristic and techno leaning electropop jam Prophet. It’s very other wordly and exotic, kind of Grimes, Die Antwoord, The Knife, and Pictureplane like with its witchiness. The song is off Zhala’s Prophet EP, out 3 months ago on Konichiwa Records. For more of her alluring, trippy music off the EP, stream ethereal Slippin Around below.

OFFICIAL VID: Little Dragon – Paris

May 29, 2014

Not to be glossed over is this awesome new video for Little Dragon’s Paris, possibly my favorite song off their new album Nabuma Rubberband. It’s a prime example of how incredibly infectious and fun the Swedish act’s neo-soul inflected electronic pop can be. Is it just me, or does Yukimi Nagano look even more fabulous in this than she’s ever looked, which is like, fantabulous at all times already? Plus, we get a healthy dose of her epic dance moves in the video, though for a more satisfying dose, you really need to go watch Little Dragon perform live. They’re coming to the Fox Oakland in August. Just saying. They were killer at Mezzanine back in 2011, as well as at Outside Lands. Yukimi, can you teach a dance class? And play all Little Dragon tunes during?
