I wonder how miffed Tove Styrke was when the Swedish pop artist released her first songs a few years ago and tons of people, including myself, kept typing her name wrong. I felt sheepish once I found out my mistake, but I must confess I was glad I wasn’t the only one to write “Stryke” rather than “Styrke”. It’s been a long time since then, and Tove Styrke has become a well loved artist in pop, particularly after songs like Say My Name and Mistakes took off. Come Friday, she’ll be releasing her new album Sway, whose title track is a polished and refined aria. Styrke says of the balmy traipsing, dulcet marching anthem:

“I love Sway so much! It brings me back to late summer nights in Stockholm when it never really gets dark and things just fall in to place and happen. You know those nights when tomorrow doesn’t exist and nothing in your past either for that matter. Everything is just now, and right now everything is just good. You’re free. That’s what this song is to me.” Tove Styrke toured with Lorde this spring, and she’ll be joining Katy Perry as direct support on a European run set to kick off on May 23rd. Details can be found, here.

Exhibitionist is a true exhibit of hypnotic electronica and futuristic pop. The Sydney based solo project created by multi-instrumentalist Kirsty Tickle, also known for her role in Party Dozen, has shared a third ravishing single named Sway, entrancing us with her silky synths, mesmeric trip hop beats, and acrobatic vocals on the song, out now on Future Classic. Sway was co-written with prolific producer LUCIANBLOMKAMP, and produced by long term collaborator Jonathan Boulet. The dark entangling track explores the tension between wanting to be vulnerable with someone while also guarding yourself against heartbreak. Stream/download, here.

Maryland producer Nobono made ‘This Way Dem’ because he digs groovy basslines. This lofi track got me grooving and swaying in the darkness of my room diggin Nobono. We haven’t heard from him before but we got a feeling we’ll continue to hear from him as he slowly start to make a name for himself.

It’s not everyday that unreleased Lorde surfaces, much less a collaboration with Yoni Wolf of alt hip hop and indie rock band WHY?, so Sway is a very pleasant surprise. The two linked up on Tumblr before hitting up the studio together. Sway carries the dark fidgeting bewitchment of Lorde’s earlier offerings and some of the mellifluous richness of Melodrama. How it never ended up as an official release on any album eludes me. We gladly sway in the light of the “disco ball” with Lorde.

ELKA is a new indie band from England whose pop and rock are much influenced by Bombay Bicycle Club and Everything Everything, two bands I respect dearly. That influence is certainly apparent on ELKA’s new single, Burnt Out, and its dynamic layers of electronic elements and moody keys. Burnt Out is a lushly brooding gem, its woozy atmosphere a fine contrast to its bright guitar and vibrant vocals. Burnt Out follows on the heels of ELKA’s glowing jangler, Sway, a must listen below, too. ELKA will be releasing their self titled debut EP on March 9th.

Many EDM-heads’ favorite purveyors of energetic dance music, New York duo The Chainsmokers, are back to raise our spirits after getting the world dancing to such hits like #SELFIE and Kanye. This time, they’re doing it with a remix, one of Norwegian act Anna Of The North’s Sway. The remix is one of their more restrained pieces, full of incandescent, lush dreaminess and a more futuristic deep house vibe. I’ll sway with this any day, it’s totally sumptuous and up there as one of my favorite The Chainsmokers remixes. Great job, guys!

OFFICIAL VID: Mates of State – Sway

November 4, 2011

mates of state

New video from indie pop veterans Mates of State. It’s another one of those interesting videos with odd hookups. The band itself is featured later on in the video in the “prom” scenes. The track is on their very recent 7th studio album Mountaintops.
