Nas & Ginuwine’s 1999 hip hop and R&B classic Owe Me gets the snazzy chic treatment by Midas Hutch on a fresh and funky, brassy and groovy flip, and I can’t stop dancing to the juicy plump jam. It’s the perfect way to feel cool while I celebrate another W under my Golden State Warriors’ belt (though I feel bad for Dunn’s face plant). The swagger is strong on this throwback banger, which more than tides us over while we await Midas Hutch’s new EP, which he promises is almost done. Download the dashing electro disco funk track, here.

Plenty of talented chefs are in the kitchen cooking up juicy plump beats, fire vocals, and sleek savory synths on this wicked tune named Catalina Dice. Joining brassy Brooklyn brothers French Horn Rebellion and Southern California’s Bee’s Knees is Northern California funk extraordinaire, Boulevards. Catalina Dice’s glamorous disco is a full on party rolled up in less than four minutes, but who says you can’t dive right back into its bouncy splendor again and again and again? It’s not like you’re rolling the “dice” or anything with these dashing boys involved. Catalina Dice is a bonafide banger, a smoking hot, steamy scorching disco house swooner. As French Rebellion and Bee’s Knees say in the description for the track, “Summer’s ending, but it doesn’t mean we’re stopping the party.” Grab the jam from iTunes, here.

As it draws later into a Friday night, I find myself ready to shift gears into something more upbeat and appropriate for the start of the weekend. Not only is White Cliffs’ On Call an exhilarating jam that fits the bill, it also goes the extra mile with its psychedelic spiraling electro-soul and a saucy slinking groove. We were mainly familiar with the NYC based songwriter and producer’s remixes and collaborations in the past, but with On Call, he’s marked himself a solo artist to watch. White Cliffs already has a debut EP readied for us, due to arrive September 29th. He says of its lead single: ‘"On Call" represents a new road that I’ve wanted to travel since making music… It’s a little taste of the songs I’ll be releasing from now on and I can’t put into words how excited I am to share it with everyone.“ People who say the word “swag” is used too often are right, but it’s the perfect description for On Call.

I’m infinitely glad I got to see Sundara Karma at Live 105′s Club NSSN show back in December, because my other chance to see them at SXSW was kind of a fail. It was at the Mohawk, at the indoors stage, and it was so packed that I couldn’t even squeeze through the doorway and was left peering above tall shoulders and heads trying to get a glimpse of the British band belting out their ebullient hooking rock anthems. At the same time, it was such a thrill to see how far the four piece had come. We’d been supporting Sundara Karma from the get go, and we loved their long awaited debut album Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect. The quartet has since released a fresh new single named Explore for which they’ve released a video, too. Explore is is a new track they’re adding to an expanded edition of that debut album on July 7th, and what an uptempo thrill ride it is. Brassy funk and dance ready energy saturate this brawler of a swinging tune. Sundara Karma exhibits plenty of swag in the song’s video, as they do in their music, and as they do even more so live on stage. Explore is available at Spotify, Google, and iTunes, here.

Matt DiMona labels this fresh new remix with his signature “feel good house” brand, and he certainly has it right. The producer’s swanky, funky remix of Los Angeles trio LANY’s swaggering R&B pop song Bad, Bad, Bad is a blissful, sensuous retro dance gem with endless sexy vibes and a muggy atmosphere that make me imagine beach goers in Hawaiian shirts and cool shades.

New Iron and Wine

January 31, 2013

This has got some awesome swag and it’s brilliant as F. Iron & Wine, aka Samuel Beam, has been in the scene for years, creating amazing folk rock music. This spring, he’ll be releasing yet another full length album. It’ll be titled Ghost On Ghost. Lovers’ Revolution is the lead single off the album. If it’s any sign of what the rest of the album will sound like, Iron & Wine seems to be focusing on a much jazzier sound. It’s an incredibly complex, layered track filled with endless amazing strings, horns and piano. I can’t begin to describe what a work of art it is. Wow. I want to hear this live.
