The instance I listened to Steele’s Follow, I felt a deep regret that I hadn’t known about this Stockholm based artist prior to that fateful moment. Steele’s dark cinematic pop is influenced by artists such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Björk, and Pink Floyd. I also hear some early BROODS on Follow, a riveting anthem from her upcoming studio EP, Hiraeth. Follow comes today by way of its Kristoffer “KIGGS” Carlsson directed music video, which stars 10 year old Ingrid Carcamo Storm as her fictional self. Steele’s new EP Hiraeth will be out on September 20th. Purchase Follow from various outlets, here.

Slowly, but surely, a kind of a trip hop revival has been ongoing in the past while. I was just marveling over that fact quite happily last night while watching Haelos’ US debut at Popscene in San Francisco. The movement isn’t really a new one, considering the popularity of acts like London Grammar and the heralded return of Massive Attack just this week, but it certainly seems to be gaining strength. Stockholm based artist Steele bring us heaps of that trip hop grandeur via a spectacular debut EP that includes this longing song, Waiting, whose slow burning tension and dark mystique evoke Portishead and Massive Attack. Listen to Steel’s gloriously haunting four track debut EP, Opium, on Soundcloud.
