I rarely touch a video game console these days despite how often I found myself punching away at controls during my youth. As such, I’ve never really played EA Sports’ FIFA releases, though I’ve come to realize that its soundtracks are always in line with my own music tastes. FIFA 2018 World Cup’s trailer features a song that involves two artists we hold dear here at IHM, namely electro-soul trailblazer NoMBe and rising hip hop artist Thutmose, both of whom we were lucky to catch at SXSW earlier this year. The two combine talents to give us a frisky hip hop and funky soul jam named Run Wild, which comes off like a vivaciously cavorting combination of Pharrell, Outkast, and NVDES. You can watch the FIFA video game trailer, here. Run Wild is a whole lot of unbridled fun. It courses with infectious, untamed energy.

Someone You’d Rather Be Dating is a cheeky title for a song, and it’s but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this band’s whimsical attitude. The self described “band of wizards” comes from Oklahoma to “conjure pop music spells”, which Sports casts in abundance on their new EP, People Can’t Stop Chilling. The record opens with Someone You’d Rather Be Dating, a disco glam, spacey twirling jam oozing gooey sensual seduction. Despite its frisky strut, there’s a sadness to the song’s despairing lyrics. The sexy flushed track and the rest of Sport’s new EP can be purchased now from iTunes and streamed in full on Soundcloud.

OFFICIAL VID: Muse – Survival

July 4, 2012

Happy Independence Day to those of you in the good ol’ US of A! Here’s something glorious and dramatic though it’s from the other side of the pond (haha, we are independent!). Muse’s Olympics song Survival has an official video showcasing a ton of athletes. I read several articles and blog posts last week that tore this song apart, calling it too Queen like, too over the top, too dramatic, and absolutely horrible. I also heard many others laud the song. To the ones who tore it apart so bad, do you even like Muse? Sure, it’s not their best song by far, but to say it’s bad because of the very reasons that Muse is Muse and the very reasons why people love Muse…. really? And it’s an Olympics song, what do you expect? Yes, it’s a song about winning, about competition, it’s cheesy, it’s MUSE and the OLYMPICS for freak’s sake. Dislike it or like it, but put a little perspective into it, please.

Anywhere In The World will be one of the official summer Olympics in London songs of 2012. The beats are laid by hot producer Mark Ronson, and the vocals are by another great British songstress Katy B, who launched her career singing on dubstep tracks with Magnetic Man. The song was commissioned by Coca-Cola, so you can only expect polished, perfection seeking, media and attention grabbing music from such a setup. Indeed, it’s an interesting and appealing track. Not only did Mark Ronson lay down the “beats”, but a lot of the “beats” are actual sounds made by athletes while engaged in their sports. It doesn’t get much more epic Olympic than that. Add in the athlete filled, bright video and we have an Olympic soundtrack star. And I get to watch as more gas is added to Katy B’s crossover ability. While she’s been huge in the UK for awhile now, her fame in the US has been a slow climb. This will be a big jolt and I can gloat that I saw her up close and personal at Popscene some months back. Or was it last year? Time flies.
