This next one could easily be one of the most surprising and buzz attracting new tune of the day. As a huge fan of Florida band Hundred Waters and their experimental, artsy music, it was totally unexpected to encounter a Skrillex remix of their song Show Me Love, much less one that features Chance The Rapper, Moses Sumney, and Robin Hannibal of Rhye. Need a moment to digest this roster of much contrasting talent? I needed a long one, to be honest. Sonny Moore even dropped a self directed music video for this star studded affair, and he certainly managed to create a very fresh new version of Show Me Love that combines the bewitching quality of the original with a new hip hop, soul, and electronica conglomeration of hooking sound. Ultimately, this works wonders because of the original track, and Nicole Miglis’ uniquely spellbinding voice. Purchase the remix, here.

It would seem that I’ve been featuring a track a day off Jack Ü’s debut album Skrillex & Diplo Present Jack Ü, but how can I not, considering the number of ridiculously good tunes off it? Today, I’m focusing in on album track Mind, featuring Kai, and what some people guess to be Sonny Moore’s own voice singing on the chorus, too. Mind is definitely one of the more banging and most trappy tracks I’ve featured off the album so far, with its signature Diplo meets Skrillex high energy sound.

Let’s finish for the moment with a remix many of you may have already heard, considering its racked up over 600K plays on Soundcloud in just four days! It’s a star studded affair. Skrillex, Kill The Noise, and Milo & Otis remixed Duck Sauce’s NRG! And as you should know, Duck Sauce is the duo made up of A-Trak and Arman Van Helden. You’d think there’s such a thing as too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to music, but apparently not, because this is one high energy, super awesome, mega killer banger! I feel a burst of explosive joy, like I want to jump out of my skin, every time I hit the play button on this. Add it to your happy music playlist.

By now, I’m sure everyone’s heard about the surprise Skrillex album in some way, shape, or form. The album is titled Recess, and Sonny Moore gave no hint before this morning that he was going to drop a bomb on us. The 11 track album features a long list of amazing collaborators and showcases Skrillex’s burgeoning, growing ability to incorporate different genres into his music. I noticed this over the past year, and at his live show when he did his series of Takeovers quite recently (note to self, pay parking citation from that night, ugh). Instead of sharing the whole thing, as many have done, I’m presenting a few choice cuts that I liked a lot immediately. Above, stream the title track Recess, which features Kill The Noise, Fatman Scoop, and Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit. Seriously, all the tracks are super dope, but these are ones that stood out more from the boundless drops and beats earlier this morning on first listen. Check out the more subtle (as if Skrillex is ever subtle, ha) Stranger below, featuring KillaGrahm. I was also much delighted and surprised when I reached track number 10 and Niki & The Dove’s DJ Ease My Mind suddenly came into the picture. I’ve been a huge fan of that song for like, four years now, and really loved Niki & The Dove’s debut album 2 years ago. They’ve been silent as hell for the past while, and this Skrillex flip of the tune was a real pleasant surprise. Check it out below, too! To stream the full album, head over here.

A$AP Rocky + Skrillex + Birdy Nam Nam?!

Holy F! What the what? This is a surprise, and a sweet one too! I had no idea Skrillex was collaborating with A$AP Rocky and Birdy Nam Nam, but here we are! Well, good for Sonny Moore, his easily recognizable patterns and melodies on a lot of his older dubstep work was getting repetitive, as much as I enjoy them.  In this team up, Skrillex lays down some wicked beats that barely skirt the boundaries of his usual dubstep. The distorted, syrupy, creepy vocals by A$AP Rocky result in a seriously sick trap track titled Wild For The Night. Welcome to the trill step revolution, kiddos. Take some dubstep, take out some drops, add some grime and trap… whatcha got? THIS MADNESS.

EP STREAM: Skrillex – Leaving

January 3, 2013

Yep, the busy dubstep maestro has a brand new surprise EP today titled Leaving! It’s 3 tracks of electric fun. It seems he’s going for a less explosive, slightly more minimalist and glitchy approach in the first track The Reason. The harder, familiar beats start kicking in again on Scary Bolly Dub (is it me or does that sound like a Pokemon name?). In fact, it’s a track that he plays a lot live so you’d recognize some of the transitions. Hearing it brings me back to the insanity of seeing Skrillex live at Outside Lands 2012. He finishes up with Leaving, which he wrote recently on tour. It seems he quickly put together this little package for fun and as a small treat.
