New Swedish singer songwriter Elina makes a dazzling entrance with her first single, a piano pop ballad named Wild Enough, on which the songbird stuns with her acrobatic voice and dulcet delivery. Resolute statements and raising morale seem to be the welcome fad these days when it comes to female pop music. Elina joins the fray with her heartfelt debut about facing your fears and overcoming self-doubt. Though Wild Enough is Elina’s first official release, she’s already co-written hit songs with other artists, including Sexual by NEIKED. We can’t wait to hear more from Elina. For now, you can also stream Wild Enough on Spotify, here.

1950 is King Princess’ debut single, a love song which the Brooklyn artist both wrote and produced herself.

Of the song, she says, “‘1950’ is a love song told through the lens of queerness—historically a publicly unaccepted but incredibly rich culture. Queer love was only able to exist privately for a long time, expressed in society through coded art forms. I wrote this song as a story of unrequited love in my own life, doing my best to acknowledge and pay homage to that part of history.” It’s a dulcet striking introduction to the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter that feels heartfelt and sincere. King Princess plans on releasing a debut EP this spring, and we plan on instantanteously jumping on whatever she drops on us next after she’s enthralled us with such an immaculate first song, as well as her wonderfully soulful and honeyed voice. 1950 can be purchased/streamed, here.

Though Stolar is new on our radar, he’s long established himself as a prolific artist and songwriter, having written over a thousand songs in the past while frequently flying between New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. The now New York based artist makes his first mark on 2018 with a solo original named Erase You, an extension of his experiences over the past year including encounters with both heartbreak and new love. The velvety future soul, jazzy pop, and downtempo electronica track features buttery, creamy cooing and an irresistibly lilting cadence. Erase You emits an aura of raw vulnerability, yet it’s a silky sophisticated composition, with sultry curling guitars and sleek synth fluxes. Like in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I’m sure we can all think of a person or two from our past we’d love to “erase”, but we’ll never want Stolar and his fleecy plush new tune to fade away from our tattered hearts. Grab the single from iTunes, here.

Ben Howard – End Of The Affair

August 6, 2014

Folksy English singer songwriter Ben Howard premiered a new song on BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe show last night, and the new track is as beautiful and amazing as one would expect. End Of The Affair is the first taste off a highly anticipated sophomore album in the works. The dynamic song is, for the most of the first two thirds, a tender, delicate acoustic gem, and one of the most gorgeous things I’ve heard all week. The ghostly bridge that follows is so incredibly brilliant, particularly when it morphs into a much faster, upbeat tempo, giving off intense urgency, anger, and desperation. Different stages of heartbroken emotion are encapsulated perfectly within this one song, and it’s hard not to get carried away with it.

Irish singer songwriter James Vincent McMorrow never ceases to rouse emotion with his music. The same can be said of his latest single Red Dust, which is filled with lush layers and heavy introspection. The falsetto vocals immediately demand comparison to that of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, paired with a subtle, minimalist electronic beat. It’s a quiet but taut beauty off McMorrow’s upcoming second album Post Tropical.

OFFICIAL VID: Lo-Fang – Look Away

November 27, 2013

I just sauntered onto a new Los Angeles based artist and multi-instrumentalist named Lo-Fang, aka Matthew Hemerlein. He recently signed to 4AD. The singer songwriter is classically trained. His songwriting skills are very artistic and modern, while his soothing vocals are amazing. All at once minimalist and symphonic, his music weaves a lasting, magical journey. Lo-Fang recently released a video for his single Look Away, which will be on his debut album Blue Film, out February 25. He sounds somewhat like Gotye on the track, but with touches of James Blake and Deptford Goth or Until The Ribbon Breaks. Despite all that, there’s a traditional, string filled folksiness to the tune, particularly towards the end. It’s a sweeping, interesting mix and a all encompassing, emotional listen. Another brilliant Lo-Fang tune is #88, which you can stream below Look Away. It’s another artsy, exquisite tune filled with swells and ebbs that play with your emotions.
