Newmen is new to us, but this Frankfurt outfit has been making their mark in Germany for several years now. They mesmerize us with with wavy hypnotic electronica and diaphanous synthpop on Delay, their first release off an upcoming full length named SOFT WARE, arriving on May 4th. The slow simmering, steady blooming track is absolutely arresting, a moody crescendo of lavish synths and minimalist soundscapes. Watch the official video for Newmen’s Delay below. The single is available through the band’s website, here.

As long time fans of NoMBe, the German-born Los Angeles-based musician who’s been taking us on a brilliant journey with the monthly songs off his forthcoming debut album, we have much to celebrate soon. Not only is Noah McBeth making an appearance at SXSW later this month (with a set at our pal We Found New Music’s showcase co-presented by Interscope, details here), but NoMBe has also announced his San Francisco debut, alongside Mansionair, at Popscene at the Rickshaw Stop on April 25th (tickets, here). As if all this welcome news hasn’t already left us delirious with excitement, NoMBe has teamed up with Brooklyn electro/alt project Big Data on a fresh new tune, too! You never know quite what to expect when a NoMBe track crops up. He’s given us woozy intoxicating soul tracks, alt R&B infused jams, and a plethora of everything in between. On Drama, NoMBe and Big Data gives us torrid strumming, funky strutting electro soul, and it leaves us ever the more ravenous for debut album They Might’ve Even Loved Me, arriving March 23rd on TH3RD BRAIN Records. Each song on the album tells a different story about the women who have shaped NoMBe’s life, from his godmother, Chaka Khan, to high school crushes, summer flings, his girlfriend, and his mother. Through NoMBe’s music, we vicariously experience love, intimacy, sex, heartbreak, and euphoria, and we find ourselves relating to it all through our own personal heartaches and joys, too. Drama is a muggy sweltering, smooth gliding meditation on romantic turmoil. The single is available, here.

I’m ebulliently bouncing in my seat right now to the latest from Sego. The Los Angeles based duo deliver some foxy art rock and synthrock on Cigarette Kids with a wry drawl. It’s a droopy curling, whimsically dallying delight of epic proportions. We almost feel like the titular characters, coolly hanging out on the neighborhood corner, playfully tousling each others’ hair and tapping our feet to the boombox we’ve brought along with us. Cigarette Kids is a hazy distorted trip to suburbia, where it provides an escape from the ever mundane. It’s Arcade Fire from The Suburbs gone warped and psychedelic, heady and contorted. Some people don’t like tofu, but as someone of Asian heritage, I don’t think I can live without the soy based product, a very resilient and versatile ingredient in Asian cooking. Vancouver based producer tofû is quickly proving himself a rising necessity and treasured force in the music scene too, plus his handiwork has been anything but bland. Case in point, tofû

‘s new remix for NYC pop sensation VÉRITÉ. Aside from a whole lot of accent marks, this combination has resulted in a bold remix of Saint that transforms her sweeping, smoldering pop aria into an epic future bass, dubstep, and electro trap banger. The infectious melody of the original is enveloped by metallic whomping, dramatic swelling grandeur on the exhilarating dance edit. The remix is a free download, here.

Norwegian four piece Supersoaker is back with Black Gold, on which the synthpop act deliver more of their edgy slickness, but this time around, they’ve gone bigger than ever. Black Gold is loud and bold, its heavy brooding and sleek glide much duskier than some of their prior heart warming sparklers. The words “black gold” often represent commodities like coffee, marmite, petroleum, and coal, and there’s certainly an inkier sludginess to Supersoaker’s resounding song. Black Gold also references issues facing the world today, in a rather cleverly converse fashion. The quartet reveal Black Gold via a striking music video whose images conform with the message of the song. Black Gold, which was produced by Kristian Notland Harnes and mixed by Tore Kulleseid, is as riveting intoxicating as it is thoroughly thought provoking and soul searching. The song is out now on Koke Plate and can be downloaded on Soundcloud.

Southern California’s Stephen has been slowly revealing some magnificently profound opuses from his debut album over the course of the past seven months, showering us with genre defying music so powerful it leaves us deeply mired in our own thoughts for long after the songs fade away. Today, Stephen dropped his music video for passionately rousing, emotionally charged Crossfire, and its visuals are as much an examination of the human condition as is his music. Crossfire’s sonic expanse spans a spectrum of sound, including future bass, electronica, pop, soul, rock, and so much more. Its video examines some very pressing issues that we face on a daily basis. Crossfire is a stark reminder that things are not simple in this dizzying world we live in. We tend to lash out, ripe with emotion, and our actions reverberate with a ripple effect, tying us altogether in strife and tragedy. Stephen’s debut album Sincerely is due out on April 26th via Halfway House, and trust me, it’s going to be one resonating and deep experience.

Also utterly fresh on my radar today is a rising UK based trio by the name of Kins, who has a self titled debut album out right now. The intricate Mockasin’s is their latest single off that release. The lush, wistful guitar work on Kins’ psychedelic tinged, artsy music reminds me at times of Alt-J. Mockasin’s comes with two b-sides, the more solemn and pensive Society, and the ghoulish, haunting SBIB.

Mos Def, I mean Yasiin Bey, is still DOPE

February 22, 2012

Saw this floating around the past day or so, and I finally got around to checking it out. Thank goodness I didn’t let this slip through the cracks. Again, I’m still not used to calling Mos Def by his newer name Yasiin Bey. I almost want to call him Brother Sam instead (Dexter reference for any Dexter fans out there). But WHATEVER you call the man, this guy is DOPE and can still flow old school style so wickedly. Check this out… N****s in Poorest, complete with subtitles so you won’t miss the mad lyrics. Drop it like it’s HOT. Social-economics-political style. Ya heard?
