Goth synthopop veteran Zola Jesus made her long awaited return last month with a darkly ravishing, intensely droning number named Exhumed. She also announced a new album, Okovi, due to arrive September 8th via Sacred Bones. We now get a new sludgy taste off the album. Soak is viscous and opaque, a clamorous thrushing brooder. It’s an instant download if you pre-order Okovi, here. I’m pretty gutted that I might have to miss her stop in San Francisco at the Independent when she heads out on tour this fall. The last time I saw her live was Outside Lands Music Festival in 2012. Not only has it been far too long, but her new music sounds like it’s going to be glorious live.

GEMS has shared another track off their coming debut album, and this Washington, D.C. duo just keeps knocking them out of the ballpark with their boldly brooding and jolting soundscapes. Soak is a fiery song that rides a wave of passion between dark pop and electro rock. Gripping harmonies and crisply emotive guitar make Soak an overwhelmingly enveloping experience. Soak might be my new favorite from the duo. GEMS’ debut album, Kill The One You Love, will be out October 30th.

OFFICIAL VID: Soak – Sea Creatures

February 13, 2015

18 year old Irish singer songwriter Soak has had me captivated with her unique sound since last year’s Blud, a track that had many of us comparing her to an intoxicating blend of Lykke Li, Cat Powers, and Tegan & Sara. Today, Soak premiered a new video for her new song Sea Creatures, a swirling, languid song with a glossy covering of hazy dreaminess. She also announced her debut album, Before We Forgot How To Dream, set for release June 1st via Rough Trade.

Ever since I first heard young Irish singer songwriter Soak’s debut song Blud, which was released on CHVRCHES’ Goodbye Records, I was utterly bewitched and a devout fan. Soak’s brand of folksy acoustic music carries the dark, enchanting charm of Lykke Li, mixed with some of the sounds we love from Tegan and Sara, as well as Cat Power. She’s since signed to Rough Trade and unveiled another exquisite song, B a noBody. We get to revisit the song today, thanks to a new music video which stars Soak’s real life friends and explores teenage existentialism. I always liked the profound deep thoughts connected to existentialism…

Irish singer songwriter SOAK immediately caught my attention over half a year ago with debut single Blud, a magical piece of unique and earnest music that reminded many of a blend of Lykke Li, Tegan and Sara, and Cat Power. SOAK was the very first artist signed to CHVRCHES’ singles label Goodbye Records, a testament to her talent. Her extraordinary voice and remarkable style was captivating from the get go. Now, SOAK has signed to Rough Trade Records, and she’s released a new single. B a noBody is a tender and gentle acoustic song, out on 7" come November 3. It’s beautiful and weightless, carrying the same raw vulnerability that exuded so poignantly on Blud. Revisit Blud below.

SOAK covers Tegan and Sara’s Back In Your Head

June 9, 2014

Irish singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist SOAK, who first stormed onto my radar with her beautiful debut song Blud, has been touring supporting Canadian duo Tegan and Sara. From the very first time I heard Blud, I could tell there was something brilliant about SOAK and her folk pop style. She was the first artist signed to CHVRCHES’ Goodbye Records earlier this year, and for good reason at that. I compared her sound to Lykke Li, Cat Power, and even Tegan and Sara back when I featured Blud. To commemorate her tour with Tegan and Sara, Soak posted this amazing cover of the twins’ song Back In Your Head on YouTube. I searched high and low for a SoundCloud stream, and may have to reshare this when there is one. The cover sent shivers and chills up and down my spine the whole way through. Incredible.

Soak – The Mother We Share (CHVRCHES Cover)

April 3, 2014

Young, talented Irish singer songwriter Soak enchanted me the moment I first heard the first few bars of her debut single Blud. I immediately loved her unique sound which seemed to integrate bits and pieces of Lykke Li, Cat Power, and even Tegan and Sara. Soak apparently bewitched Scottish electropop stars CHVRCHES, too, since Soak is the very first artist signed to their label Goodbye Records. It’s only fitting that today, Soak offered up a cover of CHVRCHES’ The Mother We Share on The Line Of Best Fit, and it’s a stunning cover, at that. It places the animated, synthy song in a whole other dimmed, poignant, sorrowful light. While enjoying this amazing cover, I learned that I’d somehow missed a new Soak track a few weeks ago that followed on the heels of Blud. Stream the incandescent, introspective 24 Windowed House below.
