My friend and I have grown to be enamored fans of lesser known (but should be greater known) Irvine indie pop duo SkyDive. I was thrilled to hear their song 1982 on the way back from camping last weekend, when she was in charge of the auxiliary cord our car. I was even more thrilled when a few days later, SkyDive released a new song and lyric video named No Ceiling. I’m once again drawn deeply to their dark pulsating, guitar simmering synthpop and those magnificently breathy, raspy vocals, of which I just can’t get enough of. No Ceiling is the second single from SkyDive’s new EP, Talking, and they said it “may or may not be about a convertible.” Listen to more of SkyDive’s spellbinding pop on Soundcloud, here.

The claws indeed seem to be drawn as dark pulsing synths invite us into SkyDive’s latest single, Claw Marks. It’s obvious we’re in for a cinematic experience as the song swells and builds upon itself with restless suspense. But then a snappy beat kicks in and we’re suddenly rushing through an electrifying gauntlet, pulled and pushed by frisky synthpop and spirited retrowave brimming with sultry heat. The Irvine based project offers some of the most remarkable vocals of the year on the song, breathy raw and full of life. SkyDive explains of the song: “Meet Gregory. Gregory is a Junior, on varsity, and is waving to his cutie who’s running track. And this is his song, Claw Marks.” Aside from scintillating music, SkyDive are refined raconteurs, too. Listening and dancing to Claw Marks is like watching a movie.

Thanks to the stellar playlists that my music friend puts together on Soundcloud every so often, I’ve stumbled upon SkyDive, a synthpop act from Irvine who makes music in their bedrooms. 1982 is but one of their enchanting gems, a warm flickering 80′s pop and luscious grooving dance pop cut that aims straight for my Haerts, Postiljonen, and Young Galaxy loving heart. SkyDive’s raspy, smoky vocals add to the song’s utter endearment. 1982 comes from the band’s second EP, available now from Bandcamp.

London’s Astronauts has pleased my ears a plenty with his folksy, gentle gems. For a more atmospheric, dreamier version of his melancholic song Skydive, we turn to local Oakland musician Broke For Free, who turns in an astounding remix of the song. On the remix, there’s still a heavy, weighing sadness, but Broke For Free manages to create an incredibly beautiful and mellow soundscape. It’s one of those sad pits that I like to sit and simmer in, because it, like any human emotion, can be absolutely gorgeous. If you’re not familiar with Broke For Free’s cinematic, ambient music, check out his recent song Summer Spliffs, off album Petal, below. It’s a post-rock meets Tycho gem.

Not at all to be confused with local Berkeley R&B pop artist Astronauts, etc is this folk singer songwriter out of London who goes by the name Astronauts. After all, the two acts’ sounds are worlds apart. Astronauts, aka Dan Carney, crafted a gorgeous, gentle, but plucky gem late last year titled Skydive, and I’m quite happy to have found it, albeit late. It’s incredibly pensive and melodic, expressing such sweet sorrow and regret. There are moments when the soothing, smooth vocals remind me of James Mercer (The Shins). Astronauts is releasing a debut album titled Hollow Ponds, out July 21 in the UK on Lo Recordings.
