Those that know me well know how much of a mega-fan I am when it comes to Baltimore’s Future Islands. I was wild with elation when the band, lead by dance-fanatic and versatile musician Samuel T. Herring, broke out big with their album Singles a few years ago. As such, I’ve been enjoying Calliope, a surprise return by the synthwave and synthpop band and a one-off contribution to Adult Swim’s Singles series. I can already picture Sam dancing to the song’s perky beats and epic melody live. A lot of times, I find that these one-off contributions tend to be a bit lacking compared to an artist or band’s usual releases. That certainly isn’t so when it comes to Future Islands and Calliope. The single is available from Adult Swim, here.

OFFICIAL VID: Future Islands – Seasons (Waiting On You)

January 22, 2014

My heart skipped a beat last night when I looked at my Facebook feed and saw this video. I’m a pretty big fan of Baltimore new wave-y synthpop act Future Islands, so it sure brightened up my evening to see a new music video and song announced. Future Islands is always incredibly good at passionately capturing human emotion on moving, enthralling songs. The same is true of latest song Seasons (Waiting On You) and its companion video, directed by Jay Buim. The track will be on Future Islands upcoming new album Singles, which will be out March 25 on 4AD, the label they recently signed to. I hope I’ll be able to catch them on tour again for this album. I saw them at the Indy back in 2012, and they are amazing live. It’s obvious that lead vocalist Samuel Herring puts all of himself into belting out the tunes and prancing all over the stage. They’re absolutely mesmerizing. Fans were transfixed.

Again, Red Hot Chili Peppers has released singles from the series of songs that were recorded during the I’m With You sessions but didn’t make it on the album. Here’s Hometown Gypsy and The Sunset Sleeps, and they’re both funky great. I swear, each double release is better than the previous release, or so it seems. There have been a few goodies over the past several weeks.

Remember over a month ago I posted about Red Hot Chili Peppers releasing a bunch of material as double sided singles? These are songs that didn’t make it on their last record I’m With You. I totally forgot about all that till now. Revisit the ones I shared previously here. And listen to the latest new ones below. Is it just me, or are these singles getting better and better with each double release? The first few were meh. These are pretty freaking good.

Leftover I’m With You RHCP trax

August 31, 2012

Red Hot Chili Peppers are releasing a series of songs leftover from their I’m With You studio recordings that didn’t make it on their latest album. There will be about nine total two-sided singles. I’ll aggregate youtube streams of the first four they’ve released so far here for your listening enjoyment. I personally like the last two more than the first two. They’re all relatively chill tunes. I can see why they were not included in the final I’m With You cut.
