I tend to gravitate to art that is dark and somber, haunting and opaque, no matter if its film, music, or any other form of artistry. I’m pretty sure that’s why I was immediately drawn to School of X’s sound. Rasmus Littauer, the Danish musician behind the project, crafts darkwave tinged alt electronica. New single Forever is a perfect example of why I can’t resist School of X. Its icy mesmerizing synths, urban beats, and fevered vocals fall somewhere in between TR/ST and LISS, with a pinch of recent Portugal. the Man (in particular Noise Pollution from their latest album). Forever is strangely captivating and deliciously skin crawling. You can re-visit Words and the scant few other tunes School of X has offered up on his Soundcloud, here.

You might recall that we shared a spellbinding demo named Words earlier this year from a Danish act named School of X. The man behind that project, Rasmus Littauer, who also drums for both Major Lazer and MØ, has released an official version of the captivating treat. The official single once again leaves me in a blissful daze with its tipsy synths, scattered beats, and rickety drums. The strange thing about Words is it seems dark and murky, yet bright and misty, all at the same time. I suppose we can chalk it up to those creative Danes, who seem to have a knack for melding contrasting sounds flawlessly in their music. Words’ alt pop is imbued with slinky alt R&B then topped off with gritty electronica and hints of darkwave & trip hop, kind of like The Neighborhood fused with LISS and some Years & Years, then dusted off with a pinch of TR/ST and a sprinkle of Flume. School of X’s sound is fascinating, and we hope we’ll get to hear more from him soon.

Rasmus Littauer, who drums for both Major Lazer and MØ, is here to “school” us in the art of music with his new project School of X. He makes his debut with Words, a magnificent first electro and alt offering that starts out as a meticulous slow burner. Rasmus’ svelte vocals entrance for well over a minute before a head nodding beat kicks in to further engage us. There’s no denying the allure of the Danish project’s rickety drums, sleek strings, and tipsy synths. It’s a sublime daze that I find myself in for close to four minutes long as School of X makes an indelible impression with his first song.
