Controversy and drama aside, it’s undeniable that California’s Hippie Sabotage is well versed in the electronic arts. After all, these are the fellows who gave us Habits, that tantalizing Tove Lo flip which I’ll love till the day I die. The duo make their return to IHM with a fresh new re-work, turning their attention to pop purveyor JØUR’s cottony floating pop gem, American Nightmare. They sample the track and forge Lights Out from its components, serving up an electrifying future beats cut full of restless, fidgeting energy. Stuttering drums and rolling snares jab at us mercilessly, delivering a sensory explosion of ambient sonic magnificence. Listen to the original, here. The difference is night and day.

Another stunning re-imagining of an old tune to hit me with its magnificence is a total makeover of Vanessa Carlton hit A Thousand Miles by none other than by the ever brilliant MNEK. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t love that tune back like… over a decade ago! It’s been some time. MNEK turns in a crazy wild cover of the song that transforms it into a soul pop and electronic R&B treat with his usual UK house style and silken vocals. Not only that, but he even works in B-52 classic Love Shack! Love Shack! With A Thousand Miles! By MNEK! I mean, how the hey do these genius musicians even come up with this stuff? It’s so good, my brain explodes.

I seem to gravitate towards everything that Washington producer BLVCK CEILING puts out. So far, his tunes have sampled and remixed a wide range of artists, including Kreayshawn and Katy Perry. He drowns each track with his heavy, ominous witch house style and I find it all so deliciously good. Today, BLVCK CEILING gives us We Burn (more&more), which samples 90’s dance hit More And More by Captain Hollywood Project. It’s a welcome blast from the past, and BLVCK CEILING once again transforms the tune into a syrupy, droopy, hazy listen.

Not long ago, I featured an up and coming Finnish producer by the name of Elaksi. I was immediately drawn to his atmospheric trap and bass music, since I’m keen on that sort of sound, if you hadn’t realized by now. Shining is his new track, and it’s another exhilarating future bass one with hypnotizing trap elements and some deliciously distorted sampling of OneRepublic.

Rising New York rapper Skizzy Mars dropped a brand new track today. Too Ill was produced by Michael Keenan and boasts a helluva catchy, melodic, hooking chorus. It also samples the Snakehips remix of Banks’ Warm Water, which is certainly VERY high up in my best remixes of 2013 chart. My friend’s absolutely crazy about that one. You really can’t go wrong sampling it. Too III is a whimsical, carefree track that reminded me at times of Theophilus London. Revisit my previous feature of this guy, here, to check out some more tunes. If you’re too lazy to click over, I’ll tack on Moments, featuring Ms. Jones and produced by Mikey Fresh below.

Introducing: Party Supplies

January 18, 2014

Fresh on my radar today is New York City duo Party Supplies. The duo produces some very unique, genre bending music that blends pop, rock, dance, soul, and funk with lots of 80’s luster and 90’s grit. They have an album out titled Tough Love that came out late last year. Out of what I listened to, the groovy New York 2017 is my favorite. Check that one out below and a bevy of other stand out tracks by Party Supplies. It seems they sample from old classics for some of their tunes sometimes. For example, the saxophone imbibed Tough Shot obviously utilizes Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants To Rule The World, which is an 80’s song I love oh so much. Also check out the stellar dance remix of Going Back by The Knocks.

Canadian trio Keys N Krates is one of my favorite trap acts from 2013, and they continue to reign in 2014. All The Time is their brand new track, and it’s quite, um, foggy. It’s a very ambient and chill trap piece compared to tracks off Keys N Krates’ SOLOW EP from last year. Chill or not, All The Time is still exhilarating beyond words. All The Time is a “Tove Lo flip”, meaning it utilizes Swedish pop singer songwriter Tove Lo’s fantastic single Habits, which I featured gleefully some months ago. Keys N Krates takes the haunting gem and works wonders with the hip hop beats and tweaked samples. I n the end, who really needs anything else, but music?
