If you’re a devout follower of the blog, then you probably know about my love for Operators, a project created by Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks). Operators released a new album named Blue Wave earlier this year on Last Gang Records. I couldn’t get enough of the vivacious fusion of new wave, synthpop, and brooding post-punk found within that album. Get ready to move your body as we dive into newly announced album single Control. The track is one of the danciest jams off the album, a full blown electrifying shock of analog buzzing, icy rocking splendor. Control drops as a single on Last Gang come October 7th.

I was elated when Operators first surfaced a few years ago, since I was rather sad at the time that Handsome Furs had broken up. The indie rock band was formed by Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits) and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks, and they certainly bring the fire on their spirited, rollicking new wavey dance rock music. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Operator, but they make a grand re-entrance by announcing a debut album, Blue Wave, and revealing its first single, a jaunting tune named Cold Light. Blue Wave will be out April 1st on Last Gang Records, and I can’t be more excited.

Operators is back with a second single, and Start Again is a synth wave and analog dance rock treat. You might recall I shared their debut song True before, describing how the song reminded me of Divine Fits and the now defunct Handsome Furs. I then went on to discover that Operators is a new project helmed by Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade, Divine Fits, and Handsome Furs, so it all made perfect sense. He teamed up with Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks to form Operators. They’re currently on tour opening for Future Islands as well as headlining their own shows. On October 8, they’ll play Bimbo’s 365 in San Francisco, with Zola Jesus. Operators’ debut EP, EP1, is out right now. Revisit debut single True below.

When I pressed play on True, by Operators, earlier today, I didn’t read anything about the song or band to begin with. My very first thoughts were, gee, this sure sounds like Divine Fits or Handsome Furs. Interestingly enough, when I went back to the email where I first found the track, I learned that Operators is a new dance project formed by Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade, Divine Fits, and Handsome Furs, along with Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks! Suddenly, it all made perfect sense. One is Operators’ debut single, off first release EP1, out August 5. The synth driven new wave dance tune is one delicious piece of electronic rock music. Operators is touring in support of Future Islands.

Divine Fits have been slowly growing on me. I’m pretty fond of Handsome Furs, so it’s cool that even though Handsome Furs disbanded, Dan Boeckner decided to join forces with Britt Daniel and Sam Brown to form a new band. That Handsome Furs’ indie pop sound that Boeckner adds to the band happens to make the music very much remixable. For an extra dose of new wave beat, here’s the new RJD2 remix of Divine Fits’ Would That Not Be Nice. While it’s a great approach, it sure can’t compare to the OG track. The clarity of the unmixed rock cut speaks more to me.

Divine Fits covered Frank Ocean!

October 17, 2012

Everyone is covering Frank Ocean these days. Even Divine Fits embarked on a live cover in Rhode Island the other night. The superband (whose members consist of Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner, and New Bomb Turks’ Sam Brown) did a cover of ChannelORANGE track Lost and made it their own rocking tune. It sounds pretty darn good. These guys were fantastic at Treasure Island Music Fest this past weekend.

OFFICIAL VID: Divine Fits – Would That Not Be Nice

October 5, 2012

I gushed about that new supergroup Divine Fits when they first previewed several tracks recently. It was some great news after Handsome Furs announced their breakup earlier this year. Divine Fits is made up of Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner, and New Brown Turks’ Sam Brown. Today, they released a video to go along with their track Would That Not Be Nice, which is one of those two tracks I previously shared. Out of the two, this is the one that sounds much more Spoon like, while the second song, My Love Is Real, sounded much more Handsome Furs like. Now, I’m not one to argue against Spoon’s absolute brilliance, but due to my own personal tastes, I enjoy Handsome Furs’ sound more than Spoon’s, though I love Spoon too. So I greatly look forward to a video for their other track. There’s no doubt that Would That Not Be Nice is a great, rocking tune too.
