Veteran musician and accomplished producer Butch Walker dropped a beautiful new folk tune today, and it features none other than Johnny Depp on a simmering hot, sexy guitar solo near the end (that guy….whoo). 21+ is a pastoral and rustic song, melancholic and weathered. The track was also produced by Ryan Adams, so it’s really the result of quite a trifecta of artists. 21+ will be on Walker’s new full length, Afraid of Ghosts, out February 3 on Dangerbird Records.

OFFICIAL VID: Jose Gonzalez – Stay Alive

December 17, 2013

Last week, I featured the song Step Out by Swedish singer songwriter Jose Gonzalez, of whom I’m a devoted fan of, thanks to all his solo work and his work with his band Junip. Step Out is off of the soundtrack for the Ben Stiller starring film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and if you’ve paid attention to the gazillion television ads that have been showing for the movie, you would’ve heard the song soundtracking the trailer. While Step Out is a stupendous, soaring tune that stands out from a lot of Gonzalez’s other more subtle or folksier music, Stay Alive, another of his contributions to the soundtrack, is delicate and soft spoken. It’s a beautiful, heart melting song that I couldn’t help but fall deeply in love with, even more so than Step Out. Stay Alive is one of those tunes that make your legs feel all jello-y and weak. Surprisingly, Ryan Adams wrote the song for Jose Gonzalez! In retrospect, you can hear some of Adams’ touch in the song indeed! Today saw the release of an official video fro the track, which ties in closely to the film. I find myself really wanting to see the film. Accompany a film with good music? Easy way to reel me in.

It’s no secret that Ryan Adams has a deep love of metal. He demonstrated that love again with this new cover of Iron Maiden’s Wasted Years, but instead of devoting it to that hard rock sound, he mellows it out to an infinite degree. The folksy acoustic rendition is incredible and moving. He recorded the cover for the soundtrack of the next season of television show Californication. In case you’re left hungering for the original, intense, classic rock song, here you go:

AWwwwwWwww. AWWWWW. THIS is a must share must share must share! As the story goes, a poor little stray kitten was running around lost and scared on the freeway recently and was hurt badly. The little fella was rescued by folks who work at Burger Records. Look at this cute little kitty…

The vet bills are stupendously high, so they threw together “The Kitty Comp”, a charity cassette (2 of them, double sided) featuring 50 unreleased songs from some AWESOME artists. The compilation, of which only 500 were made, costs a minimal $10, with all proceeds going to the vet bills for the poor kitten, then anything beyond that goes to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I’m all behind this cause, as a HUGE animal loving, cruelty hating person. Music and animals, can’t go wrong with that. Stream one of the cuts from the cassettes above, Summer Twins’ adorable version of Senor Don Gato (which I’ve just realized is an old childrens’ song). Here’s a couple of today’s share worthy covers. Above, Dry The River covered Usher’s new Diplo produced song Climax, taking away some of the more hip hop r&b qualities and adding a more acoustic, folksy flavor to it. I can’t say it works perfectly and gets a bit waily at a few moments, but it’s still an awesome approach and sounds very decent at times. It almost sounds like a Bon Iver version of Climax.

Next, we have a beautiful, emotional acoustic cover from Ryan Adams of Danzig’s Mother. It comes as no huge surprise that Mr. Adams chose to cover Danzig, knowing how into metal the guy is. This cover works wonders.

OFFICIAL VID: Ryan Adams – Chains Of Love

January 17, 2012

Here’s the second official video for a song off of Ashes & Fire from Ryan Adams! Chains Of Love is a very pleasant alt-country song, and apparently, Mr. Adams’ band is full of beautiful, young women who like to hang out on foggy rooftops with pyrotechnics.

Round and Round

January 5, 2012

Ryan Adams covered 80’s heavy metal band Ratt’s famous song Round and Round on Canada’s Q Radio, and here’s the recording. I’m not familiar with Ratt, but I’ll include the original below. As expected, Mr. Adams’ version is very different from the original hard rock track. They’re basically night and day. What an earnest and raw flavor Ryan Adams brings to his acoustic cover.

Are you ready for the original 80’s heavy metal Round and Round? Classic rock!!!
