I can bet on it that you’ve never heard the Stones in quite this fashion. Vermont duo argonaut&wasp have created a jaunty sweet cover of The Rolling Stones’ classic Beast Of Burden, but this is an airy light, synth sliding dance pop delight! In fact, its candy warped moments remind me of some of Prince’s whimsically grooving delights, but fused with some light hearted Cherub. The cover came about since argonaut&wasp played the book release party for Rich Cohen’s The Sun & The Moon & The Rolling Stones, and I couldn’t be happier that they put their heads together to rework, reinterpret, and create addictive covers of iconic stone’s songs.

Today, Los Angeles artist Lincoln Jesser dropped his debut album Modern Color, from which I’ve featured many a fantastic synthpop treats. To mark the occasion, he’s offered up album tune Rolling Stones for our streaming pleasure. The lustrous synthpop track is exhilarating and enthralling with its lush production and lively hooks. I find myself reminded of Robert DeLong on this one.

Win of AF + Rolling Stones!

June 10, 2013

The Rolling Stones have been touring and inviting some great guests on stage at their different stops, but this one has got to be one of the coolest yet. While in Montreal, who else should be invited on stage but Montreal resident Win Butler of Arcade Fire? The crummy video clip by a fan leaves lots to be desired, but I was still mesmerized by their performance of The Last Time from beginning to end. I also never noticed how gigantor Win actually is??? How come he looks so huge next to the Stones? Or is it that I never realized how tiny Jagger and the rest of em are?

What??? As if we aren’t already so excited to have a new Tegan and Sara album this year, the twins also contributed a track to the HBO series Girls’ soundtrack? Them too? Sheesh. Maybe I need to watch this show sometime and see what all the hoopla is about! Not only do the twins have a new contribution for that soundtrack, but the lovely Fool To Cry is produced by RAC and it’s a Rolling Stones cover! Win win! It’s a sultry, soulful slow jam, not at all what we’re used to from Tegan and Sara or RAC. It only goes to show their versatility and talent.

The Stones… and Florence

November 30, 2012

The Rolling Stones. With Florence Welch. On stage. Together. Performing the Stones’ classic Gimme Shelter. I guess she’s got the moves like Jagger! Epic. Check it.

Rolling Stones!

October 11, 2012

I know I’m a little belated on this one, but when I saw the announcement very late last night, I was lazy, sorry. For those who haven’t checked it out yet, The Rolling Stones returned with a brand new single in the wee hours of the night. Here’s the lyric video for stomping rock and roll tune Doom and Gloom. Someone please say that in a very dramatic, deep voice.. DOOM and GLOOM!!! It’s the first new material from the Stones in seven long years. I wouldn’t say it’s life changing, but hey, they’ve still got it, right? It’s the Rolling Stones!!! Doom and Gloom will be on their upcoming greatest hits collection GRRR! The new album has a release date of November 13 in North America (12 for the rest of the world).

Jack White Pop-up At Outside Lands

August 14, 2012

There’s no better place to do a pop-up than San Francisco’s Outside Lands. It fits the spirit of the fest oh so well. Jack White surprised everyone with an afternoon set by the food trucks in the woods this weekend. Turns out, even Tom Morello showed up and did a surprise set there in the woods (cue Bon Iver music). I, sadly, had no idea this was going on and was off running around between other sets and completely missed the magical moment. Don’t hate me, but I also sacrificed Jack White’s set later that day to catch Santigold and Bloc Party (I’m a huge Bloc Party fan and it was well worth it). But if I could clone myself and hit up everything I regretfully had to miss, I would’ve hit up Jack White’s pop-up and his official set at Lands’ End on the Polo Fields. So, don’t feel too jealous watching these next couple of amazing clips. I didn’t get to see it live, either. Mr. White chose to use his all female backing band for the woods surprise show, and switched to his all male backing band for the official set. Here’s his performances of Hotel Yorba and Love Interruption. I wonder if these folks felt like they were incredibly lucky to have been grabbing some food truck bites right around this time! Note to my future clone: camp out in the woods. STAY there. Wait for musical surprises.
