It’s been a short while since I’ve featured Canadian folk rockers Reuben and the Dark. In the interim, they’ve released their debut full length album Funeral Sky on Arts & Crafts, and today, they’ve unleashed a video for album track Devil’s Time, a brooding, roaring, and earnest tune. One of my favorites of theirs is still the gorgeous Rolling Stone, a song with a rawness that originally reminded me much of Conor Oberst. Revisit below the video.

Sometimes, I have new shares to feature lined up and open in tabs that, by the time I get to them, I don’t even remember how I came upon them. All I know is that the music is excellent and warrants some caring sharing. Perhaps some of you are already familiar with Canadian folk rockers Reuben and the Dark, but for those of you who aren’t, you’re in for a treat. They recently signed to Arts and Crafts, and new song Bow and Arrow immediately took a hold of me when I listened to it. It’s raw, honest, and beautiful, lying somewhere in between Fanfarlo’s chamber pop, Bright Eyes folksy sentimentality, and Beirut’s lush, brassy instrumentals. There’s no doubt the vocals remind me of Conor Oberst with its overflowing, quivering emotion. Reuben and the Dark will release their debut album Funeral Sky this summer. For more beautiful songs by the Calgary act, check out earlier songs, the more rocking Rolling Stone and the more melancholic Shoulderblade below, as well.

ALBUM STREAM: Empire of the Sun – Ice On The Dune

June 10, 2013

Courtesy of Rolling Stone, we get to stream Empire of the Sun’s highly anticipated sophomore album Ice On The Dune a week early! It’s been a long wait since their explosive 2008 debut. Head on over to enjoy the theatrical synthpop stream. What do you think? Is this another buzzing album that sits at the top of this year’s releases so far? I can’t wait for more cool videos from Nick and Luke once more singles start dropping off the release!

UPDATE: Did a quick run through first listen, which I never use as the base to judge an album (must listen through at least 2-3x for the right thoughts to form). However, I do know I enjoyed the album very much and it has a myriad of sounds across the tracks. There are some very psychy moments, and the very last song, Keep A Watch, is SO Bowie!

ALBUM STREAM: Tegan and Sara – Heartthrob

January 25, 2013

I don’t think I need to say much about this, since the buildup has been immense and impossible to miss. On January 29, Tegan and Sara’s album Heartthrob will be out. That’s next Tuesday, folks! Only a few more days to go… Though we’ve heard a number of the songs already, it doesn’t hurt to hear the album from start to finish. Head to Rolling Stone to do that. Go. NOW.

OFFICIAL VID: The Weeknd – Rolling Stone

October 3, 2012

Able Tesfaye, better known as Canada’s The Weeknd, has wowed everyone endlesly with his trilogy of mixtapes over the course of last year. The one lacking thing from those releases? Videos. This clip for Rolling Stone is only the second video for any track from those highly acclaimed mixtapes. It’s simple and stark, just like his minimalistic, bedroom electronic R&B, though Rolling Stone is probably one of the least electronic, most acoustic trax from the man. As for the mixtapes, Universal plans on releasing all three together on November 26 along with three brand new bonus songs in a bundle.

OFFICIAL VID: The Black Keys – Little Black Submarines

September 4, 2012

Debuting on Rolling Stone today is The Black Keys’ next rock video. This one is for El Camino track Little Black Submarines. The tune is one of the more bluesy, drawn out, slower ones with a lovely build up. The feel and sound of it is the opposite of that of the infectious rally song Gold On The Ceiling. Though I love the raucous track Gold On The Ceiling, I’m personally even more fond of the more morose Little Black Submarines. The live footage video is a good fit for the track and a nice change up from their last few wild videos filled with interesting anecdotes and rock and roll glory.
