The Bad Romance that comes our way from Australian project Retro Culture isn’t a Lady Gaga cover. No, this is a dreamy pulsing electronic pop confection brimming with 80′s nostalgia instead of 2010′s gaudiness. Retro Culture recently converted from a solo bedroom project to a four piece lead by multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Connelly. This new iteration of the project has announced a debut EP named Wonderland On The Radio, and new track Bad Romance leads us straight into a “wonderland” that reminds us of naive hope, past heartaches, and broken promises. It’s as if we’re dancing again in a foggy mist, dressed in our prom dresses and our rented tuxes. Will we be hurt by the morning? Will we treat each other with reckless abandon? Retro Culture’s debut EP will be released on May 23rd. Bad Romance is available to stream and purchase in the meantime, here.

That last time we heard from Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Connelly, better known solo as Retro Culture, the musician gave us a gorgeous chillwave and synthpop tune named Fading that was inspired by the world’s summer obsession, Stranger Things. The Melbourne resident returns with more of his 80′s dusted pop on dewy aching Calling. From the depths of tender agony, Calling bursts forth and soars through the air with massive vigor, triumphant and full of life. Calling is a reflection of that emotional roller coaster ride we’ve all experienced at the end of heartbreak.

The 80′s are more than alive these days in music, partly thanks to the popularity of Netflix series Stranger Things. But even if not for that show, people’s long standing love of everything 80′s will likely never “fade”. Retro Culture, Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Connelly’s solo project, serenades us with a new chillwavey gem named Fading. We sail on this airy synthpop meets gauzy shoegaze beauty, swooned by its saxophone and melted by satin gliding vocals. As it turns out, Fading is a nostalgic ode to Stranger Things, and it’s partly influenced by Daft Punk and The 1975, too, both easily detectable in Fading’s plucky groove and flushed velour. Retro Culture will be making his life debut in the UK early next year.

Retro Culture, the dreamy solo project of Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Connelly, has re-surfaced with a sleek new synthpop glider named Thread. Airy guitar, snappy bass, and feathery vocals combine for a blissful drifting, fleecy luxurious affair. This Thread, laced with warm effulgent nostalgia, threads its way with ease into my heart. Thread is out today on iTunes, and it’s a summer playlist must for long pensive days.

Just about a year ago, an electronic artist from Australia named Matt Connelly had me swooning with his shimmering, dreamy electronic pop as Retro Culture. While his early releases were all marked as demos, today sees the mysterious act unleashing his first  non-demo single, an ethereal gem named Cold. Despite its chilly countenance, there’s an enveloping warmth to Cold, whose atmospheric production and bewitching vocal chops remind me of a fine blend of Mt. Wolf and Tora. I step into its welcoming folds eagerly, surrounded by flickering beauty and soothing ambiance.

Electronic artist Retro Culture, aka Matt Connelly, joins the long list of Australian talent these days. He just dropped his second EP Let’s Make It Work, and Weekend is a gem off that release. It’s a shimmery, dreamy piece heavily influenced by the 80’s and with pop vocals that are exceptionally infectious. Altogether, the package reminds me of bands like College and Electric Youth. Visit his soundcloud to check out more great tunes from the rising musician.
