Clean Cut Kid is high on my list of SXSW must sees. After all, if I don’t catch them in Austin, I don’t know when I might get another opportunity to see the Liverpool fan whom I’ve been crazy about for over nine long months now, ever since I heard debut single Vitamin C. It comes as no surprise that the band just sold out their UK tour and have been named as Ones to Watch by Google and Apple. I’ve called them exactly that since day one. Today, the band has revealed the B-side for their new single Pick Me Up, a weathered cinematic gem named In Your Eyes.  The shaggy, rustic song ropes me right in with its Bob Dylan and The War On Drugs like appeal. In Your Eyes and Pick Me Up will be released on 7″ as an exclusive for this year’s Record Store Day. Everyone, please look out for one of these beauties for me, thanks.

It’s going to be April in a few short weeks, and vinyl heads all know what that means. Record Store Day is just around the corner! RSD has grown to be a major event in the past several years. Just visit your local independent record store on RSD and you’ll see a line wrapped around the block long before the doors are even open. Thanks to this ingenious homage to an age old classic method of listening to music, we get to hear some very rare treats around this time every year. In fact., today, we even get to hear an unreleased Foals song! Rain, which drops as a 7″ on Record Store Day, is a moody beauty, a sparsely introspective ballad that seems more Majical Cloudz than the raucous Foals we’re normally accustomed to, with some added U2 atmospherics and Bono like vocal calisthenics by Yannis Philippakis. This year’s Record Store Day falls on April 16th. I wish you luck in your record finding quest.

Black Friday is fast approaching, and if you’re a vinyl collector like me, then you probably know that Record Store Day has a special Black Friday event again this year. There are some fantastic goodies to collect, including a limited edition 10″ from Dan Auerbach project The Arcs for their new EP, “The Arcs vs The Inventors Vol.I”. The Arcs have revealed a track off the EP, titled Young, and it’s pure brilliance. Young is a ghostly blues rock slinker whose echoing reverbs and slithering vocals make it a The Black Keys and Glass Animals chimera, heavily shrouded in a murky, psychedelic darkness. Maybe if you get up early on Friday, and are lucky, you’ll get to snag a copy of The Arcs’ limited 10″. Good luck.

I’m very grateful to have been keyed into a new emerging act from London named Jagaara. The sister trio instantly spellbound me with new single In The Dark, an exquisitely emotive gem. Its minimalist, sparse qualities remind me of acts like Daughter and The Night VI, perhaps also due to an expansive elegance. But there’s a cinematic and strong nature to the song that reminds me of Australia’s The Jezabels, an act I’m much devoted to. Both meltingly beautiful and poignantly gut wrenching, In The Dark has me holding my breath and fully intoxicated. Jagaara will be releasing the song for Record Store Day, along with a Foals remix of their song Heartbreakers as the B-side.

For an incredibly warm and enveloping indie pop treat, we turn to UK quartet Mariscans and their new single Gone In A Second. Glistening, spirited guitars complement the song’s punchy, raucous rhythm. Topping off the charming concoction are bright, upbeat vocals. It’s a song with a sun kissed breeziness that brings to mind Vampire Weekend, but blended with the sentimental indie pop qualities of acts like Finish Ticket and The Griswolds. Gone In A Second was produced by Embrace’s Mickey Dale, and it will be released on April 18th (Record Store Day in the UK) in both digitally and on limited edition 7″ vinyl.

Even if you didn’t buy any vinyl on Record Store Day this past weekend, you must be thankful for all the releases that came out of that special day. Icelandic singer songwriter Ásgeir also released a magical new single for RSD 2014, and as always, it’s a beautiful composition. Ásgeir’s vocals are as angelic and weightless as ever on Here It Comes, and his shadowy, at times Radiohead like electronic-meets-classical production is astonishingly organic and fluid. But it’s no surprise to me, considering how much I’ve championed this amazing artist and his debut album In The Silence earlier this year. He’s huge back at home in Iceland, and he certainly deserves a lot more attention here in the US. I mean, seriously, just listen to this…. amazing.

The Pixies sure are busy with new music lately, and I ain’t complaining, not one itty bitty bit. Though I’d caught them on tour recently (and was THAT a treat!), I tuned in to their live webcast from Coachella weekend one the other day and greatly enjoyed watching them rock out. Over the weekend, I also purchased the special Record Store Day vinyl version of their very first album in 23 years, Indie Cindy, which comes out April 28. The RSD version of the LP comes with a surprise seven inch bonus with this fantastic tune, Women Of War, a noisy, grungy ode to female soldiers. I love you, Pixies!

Sunny Day Real Estate – Lipton Witch

April 21, 2014

Seattle emo pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate have returned with their first new song in fourteen years. They debuted their new post-hardcore song Lipton Witch on Record Store Day, sharing a split 7" with Circa Survive. The gritty track was recorded during some sessions that were meant to produce a new full length, but the results never saw the light of day after their 2009 reunion tour.
