If I were one of the “Bodies In A Room” from the title and lyrics of Colin Magalong’s banging new tune, I’d probably be busting out my best dance moves to its luscious disco groove and rambunctious strutting beats. The up-and-coming Los Angeles musician has delivered sonic gold on the wildly infectious song. Bodies In A Room has been compared to JT meets Daft Punk, a pretty accurate appraisal, if you ask me. It’s also very Bruno Mars meets SOFI TUKKER. Colin’s on a quick trajectory upwards after making his debut just two months ago with well-received Blossom. Keep an eye on this guy as the year continues to progress.

You know when you’ve partied too hard and you feel like you’re done with the scene, but your friends aren’t and they’re still trying to twist your arm into going back out? That hasn’t really happened to me in a long time, since, one, I don’t party that much nowadays, and two, I’m the one who actually goes out more than many of my buddies who have started families and are locked down at home. But Marble Skies brings it all back with his brand new song 5am. The 21 year old singer and producer from North London, well known for his expertise in 2-step and jazzy bass lines, returns with much electro-soulful, funky curling panache on the guitar soaked, satiny vocals steeped single.

5am draws upon his personal experiences of going out to pubs, clubs and parties constantly during his last year at university and not having a great time.  The lyrics describe just going along with things your friends want to do like staying up all night at parties even though you don’t want to. He says: “I think it’s so easy to just get dragged along with things, to the point of having a really bad time but just pretending because you’re with your friends. I’m not very good at saying no to things. I really love singing this song and it connects with me personally every time.” Snag the suave jam, here.

I never knew oranges could be emotional. I always figured if we were to ascribe emotions to a vegetable or a fruit, it would have to be the onion. But I find myself overly emotional (in a good way) over this fine debut from a new alt-pop crew named Emotional Oranges. They drench us with stunning vocal harmonies and lights us up with a funky groove on their flashy song Motion, which exhibits shades of Anderson .Paak and The xx within its golden luscious R&B pop vocals, shimmying beats, and smelted guitar work. The newcomers are the latest chic and stylish artists to watch out of Los Angeles. Motion can be streamed and downloaded via alternate platforms, here.

I’m not sure how you’re supposed to pronounce rx Soul’s name, but the “rx” in the moniker tends to remind me of pharmacy prescriptions. Perhaps that’s what the LA based artist was going for… prescription soul, or aural balm the heart needs to get over the anguish of heartbreak and longing. rx Soul first offered up such an elixir when he made their debut with All The Way There earlier this year. And now the blooming talent is back with his fourth single, Pilldreams, a stunnin collaboration with hip hop artist INDICA. Pilldreams’ nebulous atmosphere and slow simmering R&B soul is punctuated with swanky guitar curls. It’s a woozy swooning sonic medication that seemingly alternates between The Weeknd’s dark sensual R&B and Opia’s torrid simmering R&B funk, all shrouded in a sea of thick purling haze. rx Soul states of the track: “I wrote this song for all the times I’ve found myself tempted to "take a pill” to solve a problem instead of investigating and addressing the root of the issue. Self-medication can mean a lot of different things for me, and whatever shape it comes in it can be hard to recognize, much less fight off. Pilldreams is just two sides of that same fight.“ Pilldreams can also be streamed via Spotify, here.

Every time a new Maths Time Joy track surfaces, I know we’re in for quite the spectacular sonic experience. The Grammy-nominated UK producer & songwriter always links up with superb vocalists on his singles. Misunderstood is no different. Los Angeles neo-soul songstress Asal Hazel joins the producer on the track, intertwining her chiffon voice with his buttery crooning. Their vocals dance seductively over Maths Time Joy’s gooey ravishing bed of dreamy synths and slow burning funk guitar. Misunderstood is the latest track to be released off Maths Time Joy’s Sunset Motel EP. Stream prior releases on Soundcloud, here.

At first glance, the title of Weslee’s new single might be mistaken as “sweet dreams”, but this dream of a tune from the British duo is steamy and hot, with a fierce and foxy strut. Sweat Dreams is a future funk meets R&B pop jam brimming with sultry vibes and hip-swaying beats. It’s a must for fans of Nao and AlunaGeorge’s dance-inducing electro and torrid sizzling R&B soul. You can follow Weslee and their growing compendium of outstanding songs on Spotify, here.

It’s been years since Adrian Lux dropped his hit single Teenage Crime. A bevy of fine remixes cropped up in its wake, too. Swedish multi-instrumentalist and producer STRØM brings back our love for the song with a superb cover that injects the song with a fresh sense of sultry dark intrigue. The sooty splendor of this murky, dusky Teenage Crime is rather deliciously Zhu-like, with some of the curling funk guitars of Ben Khan. STRØM’s electrifying cover seems to befit a mysterious tryst, or a secret rendezvous of some sort. You can also stream the track via Spotify, here. Re-visit some of the artist’s prior originals on Soundcloud, here, including previously featured releases Shay-Ling and Mesmerize.

Ah, Zanski and that slinky burning drawl… It melts me to the core every time I listen to one of his tunes. I guess you could say I’m a “fool’ for Fool, but in a good way. The electro-soul and R&B funk swooner is the Canadian artist’s latest exhibition of fine musicality and expert delivery, a Jai Paul meets Opia and RKCB sort of gooey, moody sonic courter. It’s a new taste from Zanski’s forthcoming EP, Derivative Emotion, arriving next month. You can also jam out to Fool on Spotify, here.

Bust out your slickest dancing shoes, because you’re going to want to get down and dirty to the funky synths and sooty smoothness of Superficial, our very first introduction to a young new talent from London named Tommy Down. Take the velveteen electro-soul of HONNE and the jazzy friskiness of Tom Misch, dip them in some of the snappy funk we normally associate with Jai Paul or Gnarls Barkley, and you’ll get a taste of this fine, dapper jam, of which Tommy Down states: “The track tries to act as an analogy. It tries to show how our generation is fully aware of how narcissistic and unhealthy it can be. Yet in spite of knowing this; we don’t seem to care and almost revel in being like this.” Superficial is available from iTunes, here.

Kentucky newcomer Brennan Villines arrives with confidence on swaggering first song Bad Habit. He’s a smooth operator with that soulful voice of his, and his snazzy smoldering R&B soul debut oozes steamy sexiness. Rich in brass and rife with melting strings, Bad Habit is that Tom Misch and Bruno Major union you’ve always wanted, with a dash of Justin Timberlake’s wily charm, too. Brennan explains: “Bad Habit came into fruition as a result of my experience with my bad habit. Also any song I can slide an Office reference into I’m happy about.” This swooning introduction to the singer songwriter is taken from Brennan Villines’ debut EP Make It Work, a deeply personal project which tells his honest story and experience with a specific relationship that turned his life upside down through drug addiction. Brennan worked with Benny Reiner on the record, a Grammy Award winning musician who is an original member of the Hamilton cast and has worked with the likes of LAUV and Berhana. Keep up with Brennan Villines via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
