I’m loving what Demo Taped has done with a couple of Sylvan Esso’s red hot singles from the beloved North Carolina duo’s upcoming album What Now, easily one of my most highly anticipated records of the moment. The 19 year old producer from Atlanta has given both Radio and Kick Jump Twist extra texture with his whimsical makeovers. They take me right back to my old Nintendo gaming days. His Radio remix is a nimble bouncing, larkish flittering treat. Demo Taped whimsical future bass remix of Kick Jump Twist is no different. It skitters, shuffles, and skips with plenteous spaciousness for your best pop and lock moves. Find Demo Taped Kick Jump Twist remix below. You can also stream his Radio remix off of Soundcloud below, too. Sylvan Esso’s sophomore album What Now will be out on April 28th.

Sylvan Esso is one of those bands that I can proudly say I’ve been a huge supporter of from the very beginning, and it was such fun watching them become the indie darlings of 2014 after the release of a terrific self titled debut album. If you’ve been following IHM for long enough, then you know that I first stumbled upon the North Carolina duo’s playfully mesmeric electronic pop back in 2013. Aside from promptly sharing their earliest songs, I also brought said songs with me to Burning Man that August, gleefully blasting their tunes at camp where I was pretty much in charge of playing near non-stop music for close to 5 days. I, like many others, have been waiting for Sylvan Esso’s return. And boy, is Radio worth that wait, a trembling, pulsating whirlwind of ethereal springing, spunky jabbing charm. As one of my music friends also pointed out, Amelia and Nick go a rather Oh Land like route on this tune, though far more jittery and restless. Sylvan Esso will be embarking on a short tour this month and the next, culminating with a set at Treasure Island Music Festival. I look forward to seeing the duo again after having first caught them at intimate Bottom of The Hill in San Francisco prior to their meteoric indie rise.

Back in July I stumbled upon a Swedish pop quartet named The Royal Concept. Their song On Our Way immediately convinced me that they had a very bright future ahead. On Tuesday of this week, they released their self titled debut EP. Another super catchy track off the release is the sun drenched Radio. Listen to it above, and let’s visit the fantastic On Our Way below. Wow, it already racked up over half a million views on YouTube since July! Well, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. 😉

OFFICIAL VID: AlunaGeorge – Watching Over You

October 4, 2012

AlunaGeorge continues reeling in more fans and attention. BBC Radio 1 is releasing a compilation of hot tracks from 2012, and who else, but AlunaGeorge is on it along with the likes of Knife Party, Steve Aoki, Azealia Banks, TNGHT, Nas, M83, Emeli Sande, Porter Robinson, Florence & the Machine, Hot Chip, Major LAzer, Drake, Frank Ocean, you name it. I would consider that a definite sign of future success to come when you’re in the company of those acts. Titled Annie Mac 2012 Presents, the compilation will feature a brand new AlunaGeorge track titled Watching Over You, a glitchy, relaxed piece of future pop. Check out the colorful video…

oOoOO’s Headphone Highlights session

March 21, 2012

Yes, I’m doing a complete 180 from the last post. oOoOO did an awesome session for Redbull Music Academy Radio. Listen to the dark, choppy, screwy set below along with some description from oOoOO himself. And here’s the description on Redbull Music Academy’s website:

Yeah, okay, we got it – witchhouse was meant to be a joke, so was zombie wave and downtempo crunk. But, mind you, oOoOO is serious business. With a sharp ear for dreamy dark pop melodies, Swishahouse grooves and heavy bass action, Frisco representative oOoOO (just say ‘OH’) caused excitement and awe just as his stage name would suggest. Starting out as a punk band guitar slinger, young Christoph Dexter Greenspan got sucked in by the mysterious impact of early Wu-Tang, and the combination of dirty drum loops and ghostly apparitions stuck with him for good. Fooling around with the screwed & chopped aesthetics of the Dirty Dirty, elements of goth and shoegaze, oOoOO kick-started a proper hype with what was once dubbed “dirge-disco, like Chic on downers”. His self-named debut EP saw the light of day in 2010 on quality imprint Tri Angle where his next release, ‘Our Loving Is Hurting Us’, is in the pipeline for Spring 2012. In this episode of Headphone Highlights, oOoOO deciphers the main influences of his soundtrack for a decelerated youth.

I don’t take witch house as a joke. Perhaps the name of the genre started as a joke, but I have no qualms continuing to call that stuff by this name. I like that name. Sue me.

Young Turks took over the radio in Australia for an epic set including a live performance from Chairlift and a mix by Romy XX. Also previewed was a brand new Jamie XX track titled Touch Me. The track has a very balearic sound (think instruments used by bands like Vadoinmessico and Crystal Fighters). It also reminds me of some of Caribou’s work, which isn’t surprising since the two amazing producers have been dancing circles around each other with co-mixing at the Boiler Room and other such things. Touch Me is breezy and relaxing. It makes me want to go to some exotic beach party and sip on some Mai Tais in shades. Check out the new song above, and the full mix below.

The Drums live session for Absolute Radio

December 20, 2011

Here’s the audio from a great 20+ minute session The Drums played for Absolute Radio in the UK. Their set list included Days, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and How It Ended, and they also answered some questions and chatted it up. The Brooklyn indie pop band has been growing quickly on me in the past few weeks, but I’ve yet to unwrap and listen to their latest, second studio album Portamento. I will get to it shortly!
