By now, I’m sure most of you have already caught wind of Pretty Lights’ long awaited return. Rainbows and Waterfalls is Derek Vincent Smith’s first release since he dropped Only Yesterday last March. It’s been a long wait, but the esteemed Colorado producer is back with a mighty fine signature serving of old school funk, gritty hip hop, and dubstep. Pretty Lights utilizes Shuggie Otis’ 1971 classic Strawberry Letter 23 as the foundation for the magnificent track, which arrives with an intriguing music video accompaniment. Rainbows and Waterfalls is available from iTunes, here. You can catch Pretty Lights on his live New Year’s Run late December in Detroit, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, where I’m sure you’ll be blown away anew by the artist’s live genius. Pretty Lights has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket goes to support organizations working to provide rapid emergency relief to those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Now, for something heavier and super sick. Atlanta producer heRobust remixed Pretty Lights’ Let’s Get Busy for his A Color Map Of The Sun Remixes EP. It’s deliciously filthy, indulgently glitchy, and bursting with drops. If you’ve never heard of heRobust before, it’s time you checked out his amazing, even filthier original track She Know She Bad from a month ago. Trap, baby. Trap.

What do you get when you put rising Seattle duo Odesza and the brilliant Pretty Lights together? Something spectacular, of course! If I recall right, Odesza was one of his friends that performed with him at his extravagant show recently. Odesza offered up this super sick remix of Pretty Lights’ One Day They’ll Know. The kickass tune is off Pretty Lights’ A Color Map Of The Sun Remixes album, out on December 10. And what a grand tune it is, staying true to the soulful meticulousness of the original, yet formulated it into a banger filled with glitches and trap elements. What can I say? It’s a remix that’s meant for me!

Time to raise the energy level after that super morose Skylar Grey tune. Let’s do so with this awesome, sick remix of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good by Santa Cruz dubstep producer Bassnectar! Yep, you can always count on Lorin to step outside of the box when it comes to blending genres and remixing tunes you wouldn’t usually associate with EDM. And yes, kiddos, the song Feeling Good is originally by the legendary Nina Simone, not Michael Buble, as much as his version is a butt kicking good cover. Bassnectar’s version is a synth heavy fresh approach, but he doesn’t go overboard with a ton of wobbles or hard drops, sorry to disappoint those who just want endless drops and drops upon drops. It retains the jazzy flavor of the classic yet adds a whole new aura of grandiose magnificence. The remix is off a compilation album titled Verve Remix: The First Ladies, which includes other classic remixes by the likes of RAC, Kaskade, Zeds Dead, Pretty Lights, Flume, C2C, Toro Y Moi, TOKiMONSTA, Maya Jane Coles, and even more amazing producers. It’s out on July 16. As great as this remix is, my all time favorite Bassnectar remix is still Bassnectar’s remix of Gogol Bordello’s Immigraniada, however. That one is just KILLER. I’m going to listen to it now.

This is for all the peepz in the bay (and outside the bay) who go to Outside Lands every year in August. Here’s the sweet, solid lineup for 2013, just announced this morning (and more to be added later, I’m sure). As always, I’ll be there all three days, running around, catching as much excellent music as I can.

OFFICIAL VID: Pretty Lights – Around The Block feat. Talib Kweli

April 16, 2013

Today, talented electronic funk/soul producer Pretty Lights announced his new album A Color Map of the Sun. The release date is July 2, and the very first single off the track with a music video is Around The Block which features hip hop legend Talib Kweli. I’m pretty stoked that Pretty Lights is gonna play Outside Lands 2013, since I’ve never caught him live yet (yea, what’s wrong with me?). Sure, the official lineup is announced tomorrow, but they always throw out “album cover” hints on their instagram the days beforehand, and Pretty Lights is most DEFINITELY up in there.
