I don’t know what kind of “doctrine” this mysterious new collective from Los Angeles is planning to teach us, but whatever it is, sign me up, I’m already a true believer! One “play” of Doctrine’s debut single left me with my jaw wide open in disbelief. The project involving a chorale ensemble named SACRA/PROFANA is described as a hybrid between choral music and indie pop. Their first song Play is a polyphonic masterpiece, a multi-layered electro hymnal that evokes the baroque artistry of San Fermin, Dirty Projectors, and Son Lux. It comes accompanied by a visual piece which you can watch below. Those of you in Southern California have the lucky opportunity to catch this enigmatic collective live when they play Gallery 1988 (West) on Saturday. Purchase tickets, here. My curiosity has been piqued sky high, and I’ll be awaiting any reports of how the show goes as well as more innovative music from Doctrine.

ZOHARA is a producer, singer, and jazz trained musician from Tel Aviv. With the announcement of her debut LP comes an aptly named single, Play, a kaleidoscopic spiraling electronic pop song with saccharine synths and ruminative horns. Play’s quirky darkness is reminiscent of Pixx and Hundred Waters, yet it also has a finely nuanced baroque consistency that recalls Dirty Projectors and the dreamy celestial charm of Empress Of. Don’t be surprised if Play is the most fascinating aural treat you encounter this month. Repeat listens only reveal layer upon layer of ornate delight. Play is out now on iTunes.

By now, it’s probably quite obvious that I can’t resist dark synthwave and post punk when done well. So, when I heard Affairs’ Play, I was helpless to its darkwave electro-rock magnificence. Affairs is a sharply dressed five piece based in Manchester, known for their ethereal and theatrical live performances. They heavily remind me of some of my favorite brooding post punk acts like Editors and Interpol on Play, but with some glowing Future Islands and baritone Spector, too. Affairs certainly has my attention with this towering single. The band has a busy year ahead planned with an EP release planned for late spring and future recording plans in place for a debut album.

UK indie pop band Fickle Friends’ breezy and warm Play has received a melodramatic remix from Brighton, UK artist Foreign Skin. As a result, the song has taken up a previously non-existent darkness and chilliness, resulting in a haunting and thrilling listen. It’s an expert 180 flip on the original song’s vibes.

I’m still deeply addicted to UK indie pop outfit Fickle Friends’ summery debut single Swim from a couple months ago. It’s such a fantastic, stunning tune. Today, they debuted a second song, an enthralling track with more of that pop buoyancy we love so much about Swim. Play is just as warm, but it also masks a touch more bittersweetness within. The basslines are delicious and there’s still an irresistible breeziness to their sound that really pops out. Fickle Friends is really proving themselves ones to watch. Revisit Swim below with me. I must. It’s too great.
